Cornish Art History Study Day with Catherine Wallace Nocturnes—The Art of Painting in the Dark In this study day Catherine will look at the Nocturne paintings of James McNeil Whistler (1834—1903) who was a leader of the Aesthetic movement in the UK. His influence was global and he inspired a generation of artists many of which came to St Ives, including J. Arnesby Brown, Julius Olsson, Moffat Lindner, Sir William S H Llewellyn and Mary MacCrossan. Meanwhile Stanhope Forbes in Newlyn became a master of lamplight and firelight paintings alongside other artists who specialised in twilight scenes.
