Democrats came out swinging April 15 during a House subcommittee hearing on the Department of Justice (DoJ) announcement that it would curtail its defense of the federal ban on recognition of same-sex mar- riages. One witness—Ed Whelan, head of a religious conser- vative think tank called the Ethics and Public Policy Center—claimed the Obama administration’s decision to limit its defense was the culmination of a strategy by Obama to promote same-sex marriage. “I think one would have to be very naïve to think anything other than that [through] a stealth strategy, step-by-step, the administration is doing whatever it CHRISTIAN can to promote same-sex marriage and to induce the SIRIANO courts to adopt that approach.” Whelan said the fact that President Obama was once page 26 a professor of constitutional law “makes all the more implausible that he suddenly discovered” that DOMA is unconstitutional. Talk with your doctor and consider all the factors about starting treatment. HIV treatment is now recommended for everyone with a T-cell count of 500 or less and should be considered when T-cells are higher than 500, according to the DHHS* and the IAS-USA†. Starting treatment early may help protect your immune system and vital organs. Today’s medicines may have fewer, more manageable side effects. They may help you live a longer, healthier life. Girls and guys alike donned their best red dresses April 16 to celebrate Chicago’s inaugural Red Dress Party and raise money and awareness for HIV/AIDS. The lobby of 525 W. Monroe was filled with red lights, red dresses and a whole lot of dancing cour- tesy of DJs Harmonix and Jeanette. Guests enjoyed complimentary hors d’oeuvres, drinks and a photo booth. Marcus Riley of NBC and Candace Jordan of Candid Candace hosted the event. Chicago’s own Miss Foozie posed for pictures on the stage, which was later taken over by singer Kristine W. Dancers from the crowd joined her on stage and she dedicated a song to an HIV-positive friend who recently passed away. “AIDS has been a big cause for me,” said Kyler Powell, who organized the event with a board of di- rectors. Powell moved to Chicago from Portland, Ore., where the Red Dress Party started 11 years ago, and decided Chicago needed one of its own. He wants to “bring [AIDS] back into the spotlight.” Powell said the disease is still an issue, but many people have become apathetic about it. The Red Dress Party is “really to raise awareness for HIV and AIDS,” he said. All net proceeds from the event will be donated to AIDS Foundation of Chicago and the Equality Project.
