On May 4 runners of all ages and abilities from 136 nations will take part in the first-ever Wings for Life World Run. The top prize will be an extraordinary month-long trip around the world for the best male and female runners. The remarkable feature of the first global sporting event of its kind is that a moving finish line will be chasing the runners from behind instead of the runners dashing towards a fixed finish line. It will start at precisely 10am UTC and will end hours later when the last male and female runner is caught by one of the Catcher Cars. Those amazing athletes will be crowned global winners of the first Wings for Life World Run. They will win an unforget- table highlight-filled journey that features stops in Salzburg, Istanbul, Cape Town, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Sydney, Fiji, Los Angeles and Rio de Janeiro. The red carpets will be rolled out for the winners at all these stops with priceless experiences ranging from aerobatic flights to meetings with sporting and business legends. The aim of this truly global happening is to raise funds for spinal cord research. Although the run is open to participants 18 years or older of all levels, shapes, sizes and abilities there are several favorites to win the race like Takahiro Sunada, a Japanese ultramarathon runner who holds the world record for 100 kilometers (6:13:33) as well as three-time ultrama- rathon world champion Giorgio Calcaterra of Italy. COVER ART BY JEFF KNIGHT 1 Film Festival Goer, Treasure Hunter There are times when we walk into a cinema knowing exactly what to expect. We know that Nicolas Cage will deliver an awesomely bad punchline after riding a motorcycle through the flaming hull of a downed jetliner, Colin Firth will make us swoon in that totally respectable way, and Meryl Streep will meryl as only Meryl can. The familiar can be a lovely warm blanket, the White Hat saving the day, and an excellent night at the movies. But there are times when we feel a bit more adventurous – times when we seek art that grabs us by the collar Emily Beck and shakes us awake. These are the times when we are treasure hunters, boldly going beyond to find something FARGO THEATRE Executive Director of inmeasureable worth. 2017 was an exciting year for EUROSPINE, the Spine Society of Europe… The year was kicked off with a press release on the topic of ‘Text Neck - the global disease of new generations’, which was not only interesting to read and may have made you look up from your phone more often than usual, but it also generated a huge (social) media impact for EUROSPINE and therefore a much broader audience for the next impressive activities throughout the year: >> Have a look at our past events to go through the exciting meetings EUROSPINE has held or attended in this past year: www.eurospine.org/pastevents.htm We held the first-ever EUROSPINE Advanced Course in January 2017, which is offered to already practicing spine specialists who have completed the EUROSPINE Diploma, either directly or through the equivalence programme – another exciting project which was pursued in 2017 and now offers the equivalence diploma to graduates from national societies’ courses of France, Germany, Greece, Portugal, Spain and Turkey! Delegates and faculty of the first EUROSPINE Advanced Course where not only engaged in highly interactive case-based discussion and practiced during the cad- and dry-lab sessions, but they also agreed on the success of the course and promptly EUROSPINE organised a second Advanced Course in October 2017! This second course was as successful as the first one and the curriculum will continue during 2018 Education Week, which will be held including not only the 5 modules of the EUROSPINE Diploma, but also the 2 modules of the ERUOSPINE Advanced Diploma AND the EUROSPINE Literature Review Course on Critical Appraisal of the Spine Literature.
