15 March 2021 Dear Brothers and Lasallians, In 1871, Pope Pius IX declared Saint Joseph Patron of the Catholic Church. On the 150th anniversary of the declaration, Pope Francis declared 2021 a special Year of Saint Joseph “in which each member of the faithful, by his example, can daily strengthen his or her own life of faith in the full fulfillment of the will of God".1 The devotion of our Founder to Saint Joseph is well known. Days before his death, John Baptist de La Salle urged his Brothers to have a special devotion to this Guardian of Jesus and the Patron of our Institute. Saint Joseph is our model: Joseph, the man of confidence and faith in God; Joseph, the just and humble man. With Mary he raised and educated Jesus.2 In his biography of the Founder, Canon Blain explains De La Salle’s devotion to Saint Joseph: What struck him most in the admirable life of the holy spouse of the Mother of God was his great docility to the action of Divine Providence, his submission to the most vexing commands, his prompt obedience to the voice of the Lord, his hidden life, his angelic chastity and, finally, his tenderness and love for Jesus and Mary. Virtues of this great saint that he longed to imitate.3 I invite you to join the People of God and the entire Institute in celebrating the Year of Saint Joseph. In a special way, let us ask our Patron to accompany us as we compassionately respond to the sickness and suffering caused by the pandemic. -

TREATY BETWEEN THE HOLY SEE AND ITALY IN THE NAME OF THE MOST HOLY TRINITY Whereas: The Holy See and Italy have recognized the desirability of eliminating every existing reason for dissension between them by arriving at a definitive settlement of their reciprocal relations, one which is consistent with justice and with the dignity of the two Parties and which, by assuring to the Holy See in a permanent manner a position in fact and in law which guarantees it absolute independence for the fulfilment of its exalted mission in the world, permits the Holy See to consider as finally and irrevocably settled the “Roman Question”, which arose in 1870 by the annexation of Rome to the Kingdom of Italy under the Dynasty of the House of Savoy; Since, in order to assure the absolute and visible independence of the Holy See, it is required that it be guaranteed an indisputable sovereignty even in the international realm, it has been found necessary to create under special conditions Vatican City, recognizing the full ownership and the exclusive and absolute power and sovereign jurisdiction of the Holy See over the same; His Holiness the Supreme Pontiff Pius XI and His Majesty Victor Emanuel III King of Italy have agreed to conclude a Treaty, appointing for that purpose two Plenipotentiaries, namely, on behalf of His Holiness, His Eminence Cardinal Pietro Gasparri, his Secretary of State, and on behalf of His Majesty, His Excellency Sir Benito Mussolini, Prime Minister and Head of Government; which persons, having exchanged their respective full powers, which were found to be in due and proper form, have agreed upon the following articles: Art. -

UNIFICATION OF ITALY 1792 TO 1925 FRENCH REVOLUTIONARY WARS TO MUSSOLINI ERA SUMMARY – UNIFICATION OF ITALY Divided Italy—From the Age of Charlemagne to the 19th century, Italy was divided into northern, central and, southern kingdoms. Northern Italy was composed of independent duchies and city-states that were part of the Holy Roman Empire; the Papal States of central Italy were ruled by the Pope; and southern Italy had been ruled as an independent Kingdom since the Norman conquest of 1059. The language, culture, and government of each region developed independently so the idea of a united Italy did not gain popularity until the 19th century, after the Napoleonic Wars wreaked havoc on the traditional order. Italian Unification, also known as "Risorgimento", refers to the period between 1848 and 1870 during which all the kingdoms on the Italian Peninsula were united under a single ruler. The most well-known character associated with the unification of Italy is Garibaldi, an Italian hero who fought dozens of battles for Italy and overthrew the kingdom of Sicily with a small band of patriots, but this romantic story obscures a much more complicated history. The real masterminds of Italian unity were not revolutionaries, but a group of ministers from the kingdom of Sardinia who managed to bring about an Italian political union governed by ITALY BEFORE UNIFICATION, 1792 B.C. themselves. Military expeditions played an important role in the creation of a United Italy, but so did secret societies, bribery, back-room agreements, foreign alliances, and financial opportunism. Pius Ix and the Change in Papal Authority in the Nineteenth Century
ABSTRACT ONE MAN’S STRUGGLE: PIUS IX AND THE CHANGE IN PAPAL AUTHORITY IN THE NINETEENTH CENTURY Andrew Paul Dinovo This thesis examines papal authority in the nineteenth century in three sections. The first examines papal issues within the world at large, specifically those that focus on the role of the Church within the political state. The second section concentrates on the authority of Pius IX on the Italian peninsula in the mid-nineteenth century. The third and final section of the thesis focuses on the inevitable loss of the Papal States within the context of the Vatican Council of 1869-1870. Select papal encyclicals from 1859 to 1871 and the official documents of the Vatican Council of 1869-1870 are examined in light of their relevance to the change in the nature of papal authority. Supplementing these changes is a variety of seminal secondary sources from noted papal scholars. Ultimately, this thesis reveals that this change in papal authority became a point of contention within the Church in the twentieth century. This explains why from Rerum Novarum onward the Church’s opposition to utopian socialism has always been at the fore, aiming at the core of socialism as being contrary to human nature and Judeo-Christian revelation. At the same time, the Church’s criticism of liberal capitalism has been directed not to the system of free enterprise, free markets, and private property as such but to the injustices and immoralities spawned by an unprincipled liberalism that can easily creep into such a system unless it is imbued with objective ethical and religious values, which alone can make liberty and democracy workable. Giochino Pecci, Archbishop of Perugia, afterward Camarlengo (Chamberlain) of the Holy Roman Church, and Cardinal after 1853, was elected pope on February 20, 1878, at the age of sixty-eight. He died on July 20, 1903, after one of the longest and most productive pontificates on record. His prophetic mission was supported by both a deep spirituality and piety, manifested in the revival of the devotion to the Rosary, the Blessed Virgin and Saint Joseph, the institution of the feast of the Holy Family, his encyclical on the Holy Spirit, and a rigorous and profound grasp of the Augustinian and Thomistic faith seeking understand- ing. -

The philosopher Jacques Maritain developed his political philosophy thoroughly informed by his deep Catholic faith. His philosophy places the human person at the center of every action. In developing his political thought, he enumerates two principal tasks of the state as (1) to establish and preserve order, and as such, guarantee justice, and (2) to promote the common good. The state has such duties to the people because it receives its authority from the people. The Cardinal Deacon asked: "You have been canonically elected Pope. Do you accept? " He was answered in the affirmative. Again he asked: "What name have you chosen for yourself?" The answer came quickly: "Benedict XV." (A.A.5., VI, p. 494) It aII happened quite suddenly. Pope Pius X was a seemingly healthy, though elderly, man. When, on August 15, I9L4, he was affIicted with a slight attack of bronchitis. no one considered it serious. But on the 19th, His Holiness took a decided turn for the worse, and on the following day, at 1:15 in the morning, he died "in the peace of Christ," probably more from a broken heart than from any physical ailment. For only months before, the assassination of the Archduke Francis Ferdinand presaged the early onslaught of the rvvar which had threatened Europe for so long.
