Bishop Hartmayer has announced a good number of changes in where priests in our Diocese will be ministering come June 12, 2013. A couple of those changes will impact on our Faith Community. As hard as it will be to say good bye to Fr. Scott Winchel, the Bishop is assigning him to be pastor of St. Theresa Church in Cordele, GA. He has been such a wonderful priestly presence here at St. Mary on the Hill that we wish he could “stay with us always”. But the Bishop has recognized his talents and has asked him to take on the responsibility of shepherding a parish in south central .

I have found in Fr. Winchel a great holiness especially in the way he celebrates the Eucharist, which I think is our most important “duty” as priests. Fr. Winchel never calls attention to himself but leads the assembly in celebrating the Mass together. Rarely have I witnessed a priest celebrate the liturgy so well. He takes seriously the truth that Christ, not he, is the central focus of the Eucharist. Father Winchel has such a calm, humble presence as he celebrates the Eucharist that he helps us to remember that the real presence of Christ is before us and in us in as we receive communion.

Fr. Winchel has been a great guide to several young men who are discerning a vocation to the priesthood. And the folks who participated in this year’s RCIA program have found him to be an awesome teacher of the faith. He brings a great clarity to what he teaches. In his day to day ministry I have found him to be very human and accessible, yet he has a disarming way of still gently reminding you of the beliefs and obligations of the faith. St. Theresa’s gain will certainly be our great loss. Fr. Scott Winchel will be greatly missed by many, many people in this faith community.

So, Fr. Winchel will be heading to Cordele just in time for their Watermelon Festival. The parish church there was a gift from a Ms. Hanna Lynch (who was not Catholic) to Bishop Michael J. Keyes when it was dedicated on April 26, 1931. St. Theresa was a mission parish until Fr. Pat Adams, OFM, became the first resident pastor in 1966. He served for 26 years and was followed by Fr. Ken Gilley (1992), Fr. Frank Berry (1993), Fr. Raul Perez (1996), Fr. Victor Seidel (2000), Fr. Ifeany Iwu (2001) and Fr. Lawrence Lucree (2002). Fr. Bob Cushing has been pastor there since 2006 and will be moving on to be pastor in Waycross, GA. The first priest son of St. Theresa Parish, Father Jason Adams, was ordained on June 30, 2012.

There will be a farewell Parish picnic on the school grounds for Father Winchel on Saturday, May 18 after the 5:00 pm Mass. I know many parishioners will want to join me in thanking him for his great priestly work among us for the last two years.

So, who is coming? It will be one of the three transitional deacons who will be ordained to the priesthood this year, Deacon Avery Hanna. He was born and raised on the Bahama Island of Grand Bahama. Deacon Avery was involved in high school education for 18 years as a layman and his final position before entering the seminary was as principal of St. Ann Pacelli High School in Columbus, GA. Even though he was somewhat torn about leaving work that he loved, the pull towards priesthood was stronger and with that thought in mind he applied to begin studies for the priesthood. The Diocese of Savannah accepted him and he enrolled at Blessed John XXIII Seminary where he has studied, prayed and persevered for these last few years. He took his last academic exam this past week and is delighted to be coming to St. Mary on the Hill following his ordination to the priesthood at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist on June 1, 2013. Bishop Hartmayer has asked Fr. Avery Hanna to report to our parish on June 12, 2013.

When asked who inspired him as he considered a vocation to the priesthood, Deacon Avery said “I was inspired by several priests along the way. What I admired the most was their dedication to serving the people of God. I pray that I too will serve the people of God the same. My inspiration from among the Communion of Saints is St. John Baptist de la Salle who was a priest and teacher.”

Finally, I want to rejoice in the good things that have been happening at Aquinas High School this year. The present leadership team of Shannon Williams, Kelli Strickland, and Michael Lammers have done outstanding work and made many improvements. The Board under the leadership of Frank Williams has been active in helping to move Aquinas forward in a positive way. The Finance Committee has worked some minor miracles this year in terms of its great management of the fiscal resources that are necessary to sustain a diocesan school. And Bill Barrett and Anita Irvin along with many donors are owed many thanks for all their help in upgrading the athletic facilities which has been long, long overdue. On top of all this good news comes the announcement this weekend that Bishop Gregory Hartmayer has hired one of our own, Mrs. Maureen Grady Lewis to be the new principal at Aquinas.

I have high hopes that Maureen will be transformational in her leadership at Aquinas High School. As a graduate of the school and someone who has taught there she already has a great love for our local Catholic High School. I have witnessed her passion in working to make Aquinas a first rate school in terms of its academics, sports and Catholic identity. With the strength of her wonderful personality I have every confidence that she will have no problem getting many people here in Augusta on board with her vision for what a great Catholic school can and should be. From working with her I know she will be able to create an environment where students can learn and where teachers can teach. The Irish nation is blessed to have Mrs. Maureen Lewis as its new leader.
