Oral history is a method of collecting historical information through tape-recorded interviews between a narrator with firsthand knowledge of historically significant events and a well-informed interviewer, with the goal of preserving substantive additions to the historical record. The tape recording is transcribed, lightly edited for continuity and clarity, and reviewed by the interviewee. Jones Professor Reginald Jones was born in Florida in 1931 and joined UC Berkeley’s faculty in 1973 as professor of African American Studies, an adjunct professor in the Department of Education. His groundbreaking work pushed the field of educational psychology, challenging and debunking ideas held particularly with regard to minorities and disabled children. He was committed to cultivating an arena for black scholars and scholarship in the field of psychology. To this end, he has edited a seminal anthology, founded a publishing house, and chosen to finish his career at Hampton University, a historically black university, with the aim of developing and nurturing future scholars. At Berkeley, Professor Jones witnessed and participated in the early development of the African American Studies Department, serving as

    Hull History Centre: Howard Sergeant, inc 'Outposts' poetry magazine U DSG Papers of Howard Sergeant, including [1930]-1995 the Archives of 'Outposts' poetry magazine Biographical Background: Herbert ('Howard') Sergeant was born in Hull in 1914 and qualified as an accountant. He served in the RAF and the Air Ministry during the Second World War and with the assistance of his friend Lionel Monteith, edited and published the first issue of his poetry magazine 'Outposts' in February 1944. Outposts is the longest running independent poetry magazine in Britain. Sergeant had been writing poetry since childhood and his first poem to be published was 'Thistledown magic', in 'Chambers Journal' in 1943. 'Outposts' was conceived in wartime and its early focus was on poets 'who, by reason of the particular outposts they occupy, are able to visualise the dangers which confront the individual and the whole of humanity, now and after the war' (editorial, 'Outposts', no.1). Over the decades, the magazine specialised in publishing unrecognised poets alongside the well established. Sergeant deliberately avoided favouring any particular school of poetry, and edited 'Mavericks: an anthology', with Dannie Abse, in 1957, in support of this stance. Sergeant's own poetry was included in the first issue of 'Outposts' (but rarely thereafter) and his first published collection, 'The Leavening Air', appeared in 1946. He was involved in setting up the Dulwich Group (a branch of the British Poetry Association) in 1949, and again, when it re-formed in 1960. In 1956, Sergeant published the first of the Outposts Modern Poets Series of booklets and hardbacks devoted to individual poets.

    ABSTRACT Title of Document: AMERICANS IN THE GOLDEN STATE: THE RHETORIC OF IDENTITY IN FOUR CALIFORNIA SOCIAL PROTEST NOVELS. Elisa Leigh Warford, Doctor of Philosophy, 2006 Directed By: Professor Jeanne Fahnestock Department of English Professor David Wyatt, Co-chair, Department of English This dissertation examines the rhetorical strategies of four California social protest novels of the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries: Helen Hunt Jackson’s Ramona (1884), María Amparo Ruiz de Burton’s The Squatter and the Don (1885), Frank Norris’s The Octopus (1901), and John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath (1939). I argue that among these four texts, those that succeeded rhetorically—Ruiz de Burton’s and Steinbeck’s—did so by making it possible for their mostly white, middle-class audiences to identify with their characters along class, race, and other demographic lines. The rhetorical theories of Kenneth Burke help explain the complex ways these novels invite audience identification with some characters while creating distance with others. I also examine the roles of sentiment and naturalism in each text’s rhetorical success or failure. Although these novels were all written or read as social protest fiction, there exists no full-length analysis of the rhetorical strategies these writers employ. In their arguments over California land ownership and the land’s potential wealth, the novels reveal much about how American identity was constructed during this period. Chapter One argues that in The Squatter and the Don, Ruiz de Burton encourages identification by blurring racial lines and emphasizing her characters’ social class, presenting the Alamar family as entrepreneurial Americans who can pass for white and who blend easily with upper-crust New York society.
