TIED FOR THE BEST IN AUGUST--The month of August has been widely described as the dog days of summer in baseball, but the Royals and disproved that by each going a league best 19-9, while the L.A. Angels and each went 19-10...the 19 wins for Kansas City marked the most in August for the franchise since the 1989 club won 21 times. SHARPENING THE SHORT GAME--The Royals enter tonight with an American League leading 133 infield hits...Kansas City has four in the Top 10 individually in infield knocks with Alcides Escobar and Lorenzo Cain tied for fourth with 23, followed closely by teammates Jarrod Dyson and Nori Aoki tied for seventh (22)...KC is also among the elite in bunt hits with 21 on the season, two behind league leading Cleveland...Dyson, who dropped a perfect safety squeeze bunt here on Wednesday night, is second in the league lead with nine bunt hits, while Aoki is sixth (6) and Escobar tied for 10th (5). FOUR OR MORE RUNS A HUGE DIFFERENCE--Kansas City was held to two runs last night, which seldom bodes well in any game, but when play resumes on September 22 the club will have to get to at least four to prevent a defeat...the Royals are just 14-52 when scoring fewer than four runs, but when at least four cross the plate, KC is 60-9 this year...since the start of the 2013 season, Kansas City is an astounding 124-23. DAVIS AMONG BASEBALL’S ELITE--Wade Davis worked another scoreless inning last night and continues to hold the Majors’ longest scoreless inning streak at 25.2, while his season ERA of 0.75 is tops in the Majors among all hurlers who have thrown at least 40.0 innings...the last run Wade allowed was on June 25th and has been the lone run surrendered in his last 48.0 innings for a 0.19 ERA dating back to April 26...since giving up two earned runs on April 5, Wade has allowed only two runs over his last 52 outings (55.0 innings) for a 0.33 ERA, while fanning 87...he nearly made it four full months without allowing an extra-base hit, but Minnesota’s Kurt Suzuki spoiled the streak with a double on July 31. HOLLY HOLDS A.L. RESCUE LEAD--Greg Holland has not earned a save since collecting his league leading 40th on August 22 in Arlington, but that rescue has stood the test of time and kept him atop the A.L. leaderboard...the last Royals pitcher to lead the A.L. in saves was Jeff Montgomery (45 in 1993), while Greg is the first to record back-to-back 40-save seasons since Dan Quisenberry did it in 1983 (45) and ‘84 (44)...Holly has made good of 40 of his 42 tries this year, including 33 of the last 34...over a longer haul, Holland has converted 80 of his last 83 attempts (96.3%) since May 30 of last season, the highest percentage among closers with at least 40 opportunities in that span...since that date, Greg has five more saves than any other pitcher in baseball (Craig Kimbrel - 75) and has allowed just 14 earned runs in 105.1 innings for a 1.20 ERA...he recorded his 100th career save on August 8 and since posting his first career save on August 3, 2011 vs. Baltimore, Holland has gone 107-for-117 in save situations, the best save pct. at 91.5 among closers with at least 100 save opportunities...since becoming Kansas City’s full-time closer on August 1, 2012, the day after Jonathan Broxton was dealt to Cincinnati, Holland has gone 103-for-110 in save situations, tying Kimbrel for the most saves in the majors while Holly’s 93.6 save pct. is the best among relievers with at least 80 save chances.
