K-KLUB--Kansas City hurlers fanned 23 Colorado Rockies in the just completed 2-game set, with a dozen strikeouts on Tuesday and then 11 more in yesterday’s matinee...Jason Vargas recorded a season-high eight K’s yesterday and then the pen added a trio...yesterday was the 14th double-digit strikeout game for the KC staff, a figure that wasn’t attained in 2013 until game #78 on June 29. HOLLY TO THE RESCUE--Greg Holland pitched out of a mini-jam in the ninth yesterday and recorded a game-ending strikeout with the potential tying run on third base to record his 10th save in 11 chances this year...opportunities have been few and far between with yesterday just his fifth chance in the last 23 games...he has made good on 50 of his last 52 tries (96%), which is tops among the 10 closers who have at least 35 saves in that span...since May 30, 2013, Holland has 6 more saves than any other pitcher in baseball (Craig Kimbrel - 44) and has allowed just 8 earned runs in 66.0 innings for a 1.09 ERA, holding opposing hitters to a .168 average...he’s also recorded 99 strikeouts in those 66.0 innings, for an A.L.-best 13.50 strikeouts per 9.0 IP. ESKY ON THE BASES--Alcides Escobar has jumped into a tie for fourth in the American League in stolen bases with six thefts over the last nine games ...his five thefts in San Diego were the most in a 3-game series by a Royal since Tom Goodwin swiped a handful of bags on June 26-28, 1995 vs. Cleveland...his stolen base pct. is what is the headline grabber, as Esky has made good on 40 of his last 41 attempts dating back to a caught stealing on September 9, 2012... the 97.6% success rate is the best in baseball in that span and the lone caught occurred on April 9 against Tampa Bay..prior to that, he had pilfered 30 in a row. CROW STREAKING AGAIN--For the third time in four seasons, Aaron Crow is opening the campaign with a significant run of games in which he hasn’t been charged with an earned run...Tuesday night’s scoreless inning of relief was his 18th consecutive appearance in which he has not allowed an earnie, tying Louis Coleman’s mark of 18 in 2013...Crow also had a streak of 13 in a row in his rookie and All-Star year of 2011 and a 9-gamer last year...Aaron has a run of 16.0 innings, one inning better than his previous career-best of 15.0 to start a year in 2011. BETTER SUCCESS VS.
