rartioter Vol. XII, No. 1 WINTER 1 9 7 9 BLACK DOME IN 1924 The Catskill Mountains have been known to white men for three hundred years and their valleys have been settled more than a cen- tury. It would seem as if all their summits ought by this time to be easily accessible by well known trails. Yet there are a dozen or more of the higher ones, above 3500 feet, which have no trails to their summits and which are climbed only by the exploring hiker, or perhaps a bear hunter in winter. I recently found another trackless peak, Black Dome, just under 4000 feet--3990 according to the Durham sheet of the United States Geological Survey--on a week-end climb in the northern Catskills. There is no trail over it, and the only paths that reach its flanks are faded out logging roads in the valleys north and south, attain- ing heights 1500 feet below its highest point. Black Dome is the central and highest of the three peaks that make up the Blackhead Mountains, running east and west, Black Head being the easternmost, then Black Dome and the last Thomas Cole. The other two are about fifty feet lower than the Dome. South of them is the valley of the East Kill, north that of Batavia Kill. North of Black Head runs a long ridge to Acra Point, then turning west to Windham High Peak. South this ridge runs through North Mountain and Stoppel Mountain to Kaaterskill Clove. Black Head is accessible by a good trail. -

MARciN* THE SCENEt Long before remembered time, ice fields blanketed central India, discharging floes into a sea covering the Plains of Punjab. The Argentine Pampas lay frozen and still beneath a crush of ice. Ice sheets were carving their presence into the highest mountains of Hawaii and New Guinea. On the western land mass, ice gutted what was, in pre-glacial time, a stream valley near the northeastern shore. In this alien epoch, when woolly mammoth and caribou roamed the North American tundra, the ice began to melt. Receding glaciers left an inland lake where the primeval stream valley had been. For a time the waters of the lake reposed in bo- real calm, until, with the melting of the polar cap, the level of the great salt ocean rose to the level of the lake. -

Heran SUMMARY OF RELEVANT GEOLOGIC, GEOENVIRONMENTAL, AND GEOPHYSICAL INFORMATION Carlin-type deposits are epigenetic, large-tonnage, low-grade, sediment-hosted disseminated gold deposits. The deposits are known mainly in northern Nevada and northwestern Utah where they are arranged in clusters and belts. The deposits in this region are estimated to contain about 5,000 tonnes of gold, more than half of which (~3100 tonnes) is in the Carlin Trend. Approximately 1,000 tonnes of gold have been produced. Carlin-type gold deposits are one of the most important types currently being mined in the western United States. Many aspects of this geoenvironmental model also apply to distal disseminated deposits as defined by Cox and Singer (1990), Doebrich and Theodore (in press), and Howe and others (1995). Deposit geology Unoxidized refractory ore: Refractory ore consists of variably decalcified, dedolomitized, argillized, silicified, sulfidized, carbonaceous sedimentary rocks that contain disseminated iron, arsenic, antimony, mercury, and thallium sulfide minerals. Base-metal sulfide minerals are rare or absent in most deposits. Although pyrite, marcasite, orpiment, and realgar have high acid-generating capacity, they generally are present in small amounts (much less than 5 volume percent) and are usually disseminated in, or surrounded by, carbonate rocks with high acid-consuming capacity. Zones with 5-50 volume percent pyrite, marcasite, orpiment, or realgar are present in some deposits. Ore is refractory because much of the gold forms sub-micron grains in pyrite and marcasite and because carbon in the rock can extract gold from cyanide solutions. -

The Report has been prepared by AMC Mining Consultants (Canada) Ltd. (AMC) of Vancouver, Canada on behalf of Premier Gold Mines Limited / i-80 Gold Corp (i-80 or the Companies). On 10 August 2020, Premier entered into a definitive purchase agreement with affiliates of Waterton Global Resource Management, Inc. to acquire from Waterton all of the outstanding membership interests of Osgood Mining Company LLC (OMC). The Property comprises a number of property parcels which collectively encompass 2,545 acres in the Potosi mining district. The four-square miles of land contain all areas of past gold production and the area of the currently estimated Mineral Resource. This area includes the historical Pinson Mine. -

Net Income Rises 29% to $514 Million ($0.59 per share) Expanded Margins Increase Profitability in Q1 Highlights • The Company reported first quarter net income of $514 million ($0.59 per share) and operating cash flow of $728 million ($0.83 per share) compared to a net loss of $159 million ($0.18 per share) and operating cash flow of $163 million ($0.19 per share) in the prior year period. Reported net income rose 29% compared to prior year adjusted net income of $398 million ($0.46 per share)1 and included $29 million of post-tax special items that reduced income by $0.03 per share. Adjusting for these special items, earnings of $0.62 per share are a Company record. The realized gold price of $925 per ounce matched the average spot price for the quarter. • First quarter gold production was 1.74 million ounces at total cash costs of $393 per ounce2, and copper production was 87 million pounds at total cash costs of $0.94 per pound2. The Company maintains full year production guidance of 7.6 - 8.1 million ounces of gold at total cash costs of $390 - $415 per ounce and 380 - 400 million pounds of copper at total cash costs of $1.15 - $1.25 per pound. -

In a world with no internet and thus no social media, helping hikers connect with each other was a valued and needed service. Because if there’s one thing I’ve learned in my decade or so of involvement with this club, it’s that the only thing hikers enjoy more than hiking is talking about hiking! Sharing war stories, trading bushwhack routes, and waxing euphoric about views… hikers, it would seem to me, love the replay with the like-minded as much as they love the adventure itself. But things have changed, and now that camaraderie is available in spades via social media. Leave No Trace is a national not-for-profit environmental organization on the frontlines of dealing with the good, the bad, and the ugly of managing the immense current upsurge in popularity of hiking and outdoor recreation. -

Barineau* Department of Earth and Space Sciences, Columbus State University ABSTRACT The allochthonous Talladega belt of eastern-northeastern Alabama and north- western Georgia is a northeast striking, fault bounded block of lower greenschist facies metasedimentary and metaigneous rocks that formed along the margin of Lau- rentia at or outboard of the seaward edge of the Alabama promontory. Bounded by metamorphic rocks of the higher grade Neoproterozoic(?) to Carboniferous eastern Blue Ridge on the southeast and unmetamorphosed to anchimetamorphic Paleozoic rocks of the Appalachian foreland on the northwest, the Talladega belt includes shelf facies rocks of the latest Neoproterozoic/earliest Cambrian Kahatchee Mountain Group, Cambrian-Ordovician Sylacauga Marble Group, and the latest Silurian(?) to uppermost Devonian/earliest Mississippian Talladega Group. Along the southeast- ern fl ank of these metasedimentary sequences, a Middle Ordovician back-arc terrane (Hillabee Greenstone) was tectonically emplaced along a cryptic pre-metamorphic thrust fault (Hillabee thrust) and subsequently dismembered with units of the upper Talladega Group along the post-metamorphic Hollins Line fault system. Importantly, strata within the Talladega belt are critical for understanding the tectonic evolution of the southern Appalachian orogen when coupled with the geologic history of adjacent terranes. Rocks of the lower Talladega Group, the Lay Dam Formation, suggest latest Silurian-earliest Devonian tectonism that is only now being recognized in other areas of the southern Appalachians. -
