DeWalt1,*, Kalan Ickes1, and Arlington James2 Abstract - To examine short- and long-term changes in hurricane-prone sub-montane rain forests on Dominica in the Lesser Antilles of the eastern Caribbean, we established 17 per- manent, 0.25-ha vegetation plots clustered in 3 regions of the island—northeast, northwest, and southwest. We counted all trees ≥10 cm diameter almost 30 years after Hurricane David caused substantial tree mortality, primarily in the southern half of the island. We identi- fied 1 vegetation association (Dacryodes–Sloanea) with 2 variants depending on whether Amanoa caribaea was co-dominant. We found that differences in forest structure and spe- cies diversity were explained more by region than forest type, with plots in the southwest generally having higher stem density, lower tree height, and greater species diversity than plots in the northeast or northwest. Our results suggest that differences in forest composi- tion in the sub-montane rain forests of Dominica are largely attributable to the presence or absence of the near-endemic canopy-tree species A. caribaea, and secondarily to the degree of hurricane-caused disturbance. Introduction The Caribbean is considered the third-most important global biodiversity hotspot (Mittermeier et al. 2004, Myers et al. 2000) due to the large number of endemic species, especially plants (Santiago-Valentin and Olmstead 2004), present there. -

Gomes is a tree of the Atlantic Rainforest, endemic to the highlands of Rio de Janeiro state, occurring in riverine forest. The new species is distinguished in the genus by having a wine colored stem with metallic luster, peeling, with golden bands: it differs from other species of Kielmeyera section Callodendron by having leaves with sparse resinous corpuscles and flowers with ciliate margined sepals and petals. This paper provides a description of the species, illustrations and digital images; morphological and palynological features of Kielmeyera section Callodendron species are discussed and compared. Key words: Calophyllaceae, Kielmeyera aureovinosa, Atlantic Rainforest, riverine forest, Rio de Janeiro state. Resumo Kielmeyera aureovinosa M.Gomes é uma árvore da Mata Atlântica, endêmica da região serrana do estado do Rio de Janeiro, ocorrente em matas ciliares. A nova espécie é distinta das demais no gênero por ter caule de coloração vinoso-metálica, desfolhante, com faixas e nuances dourados; diferencia-se das demais espécies de Kielmeyera seção Callodendron por possuir folhas com corpúsculos resiníferos esparsos e flores com sépalas e pétalas de margens ciliadas. Este trabalho fornece descrição da espécie, estado de conservação, ilustrações esquemáticas e imagens digitais; características morfológicas e palinológicas das espécies de Kielmeyera seção Callodendron são discutidas e apresentadas em tabelas para comparação. -

One clearly defined diversification was from temperate ancestors into tropical habitats. The focus of this work was to explore leaf and stem anatomical traits in relation to habitat (temperate and tropical) and elevation of the native range. A closely-related group of Rhododendron was selected to reduce variation in genetic history and reveal environment–associated adaptive traits. Vessel anatomical traits of Rhododendron accessions were assayed for the trade of between safety (protection against catastrophic failure) and efficiency (high theoretical conductivity). Rhododendron wood and vessels were found to be relatively safe. The metrics of wood efficiency were higher for the tropical species. Thus, a trade-off between safety and efficiency was found although the wood of Rhododendron is characterized as highly safe. Leaf anatomical traits of Rhododendron were assayed for habitat and elevation. Leaves on tropical species were thicker and denser compared with temperate species. Idioblasts were always found in tropical leaves but not in temperate species. -

Capacity building for carbon- and biodiversity-based payments for ecosystem services in the Peruvian Amazon: Case for Support Part 1 - Previous track record This proposal brings together a new consortium of UK universities and Peruvian research organisations and NGOs. The wide expertise of the team incorporates individuals involved in the measurement of forest carbon stocks and biodiversity, remote sensing of land-use change, development of payment systems for ecosystem services and the management of conservation and rural development projects. The School of Geography, University of Leeds, UK is a leading geography department in the UK. Tropical forest ecology is a major research focus and the Ecology and Global Change research cluster leads an international network of forest inventory plots (RAINFOR) to monitor patterns of C cycling in Amazonia funded by NERC, EU, Royal Geographical Society and Moore Foundation grants. Tim Baker (PI) has worked throughout Amazonia since 2001 with research interests at the interface of community and ecosystem ecology, with a focus on C cycling in tropical forests: quantifying regional-scale patterns of C stocks and long-term changes in forest structure and dynamics. His second focus is the processes that maintain the high diversity of these forests, particularly the role of disturbance, and thirdly, how the results of ecological studies can be applied to land- and resource-management in the tropics. UCLA Mester Title Ethical Cosmologies in Amazonia Permalink https://escholarship.org/uc/item/4f18z302 Journal Mester, 49(1) ISSN 0160-2764 Author Varese, Stefano Publication Date 2020 DOI 10.5070/M3491051392 Peer reviewed eScholarship.org Powered by the California Digital Library University of California Ethical Cosmologies in Amazonia1 Stefano Varese University of California, Davis Epistemological and Ethical Premise Geological history, or the “Long Duration” perspective proposed years ago by French historian Fernand Braudel, may be the most appropriate epistemological and ethical tools to approach the study and understanding of Amazonia as a whole integrated living system co-created by millennia of interactive co-evolution of all its/her tan- gible and intangible bio-physical entities.2 In this sense, rather than using the neologism of anthropocene – with its constraining refer- ence to a late geological era defined by the onset of the Industrial Revolution and the overwhelming expansion of capitalism, I have suggested to choose a term that enlightens the joint role played by humanity and all other entities in landscaping, bio-scaping and thus ethno-scaping the tropical rainforest, the “selva”, as an anthropo- genic phenomenon, a dynamic structured production and constantly expanding reproduction of life resulting from millennia of coexistence of all the “relatives” that inhabit the world. It is with humbleness, then, that I must refer to the Kichwa people of Sarayaku, the large indigenous territory on the banks of the Bobonaza river in Ecuador and cite their words as the most appro- priate ethical definition of what Amazonia has been and still is for thousands of lineages of indigenous people living in harmony – in Sumak Kawsay – in this immense territory now threatened by neo- imperialist destruction. -

Morphologically, Psorospermum is very similar to Harungana, which also belongs to Vismieae along with another genus, Vismia. Interestingly, Harungana occurs in both Madagascar and mainland Africa, as does Psorospermum; Vismia occurs in both Africa and the New World. However, the phylogeny of the tribe and the relationship between the three genera are uncertain.
