One of the most Contact your board by emailing [email protected] important factors is safety. No neighborhood is immune from criminal activity, but Sagamore Hills consistently enjoys a low incidence of crime. NEW FITNESS CRAZE FROM THE U.K. By Helen P. Fredrick I’ve been doing it a long time but didn’t know it had a name, OR that it was becoming a fad in Europe and slowly in the U.S. It’s plogging! No, that’s not a typo – the word is a combination of ‘jogging’ and ‘plocka upp,’ Swedish for ‘pick up’. When I walk my dog I always have a bag with me and naturally stop to pick up litter on my route. I feel this is my contribution to the beautification of our neighborhood. But now groups are organizing via social media sites to go “plogging” and clean up the environment in the process! They intentionally do squats and lunges to add to their workout. Some Tennessee citizens have started their own form of plogging, calling it “trashercize.” Groups often get together afterwards to celebrate their accomplishment at a cafe’ or restaurant, making a social event out of cleaning up the environment.

Of course it would be nice if such an activity weren’t necessary, but unfortunately, litterbugs abound! Some litter blows off the bins on trash days, but by and large the litter consists of items thrown out by passing motorists such as fast food containers, cups, straws, bottles, and cans. These items are a threat to our watersheds, as they will block our storm drains. On beaches and waterfronts they can create serious hazards for fish and birds. There’s always trash on any beach I go to.

Perhaps you’re part of a group looking for a project that would unite the group and create some memorable times together. If so, consider forming a plogging or trashercize group. By working together we can have a healthier, more beautiful city and world.

DEER IN BACKYARD OF HOUSE ON TAMARACK TRAIL By Helen P. Fredrick Also spotted lunching on hostas in front yard on two consecutive days. Also, a doe and fawn were spotted on Heatherwood in the middle of the day!

A NEW TOCO HILLS By Helen P. Fredrick I wasn’t sure how to categorize or label these words about Toco Hills – Clyde Shepherd and was one of the fi rst of its kind of shopping center in either eulogy or elegy. Recent developments have brought about popular Atlanta. The whole area was being developed in the 1950s following the as well as unpopular changes, with many of my favorite establishments baby boom after WWII. Shepherd learned the meaning of toco on an air closing due to increased rents. First it was The Shoe Center (I almost base in Brazil during WWII – it means ‘more luck than you can imagine.’ cried in dismay) and Petite Auberge, then Nearly New and Wellspring Luck was certainly on his side as he took advantage of the opportunity Treasures (two stores operated by non-profi t organizations where I could to build a place to shop and places to live for returning vets. donate as well as purchase used items), and most recently, the sudden closing of The Bagel Palace, which had been there as long as I had been There are plans to reinvent the former offi ce courtyard space into a going to Toco Hills. The aroma of fresh bagels wafted through the walls ‘hidden oasis,’ a green space back in the corner past the splash fountain, every morning into Power Lady, the gym next door (which has moved which will surely draw families on our hot summer days! Many of the changes are welcomed and inviting – the updated lighting I was curious about “Westside Market” and ambled through it recently. and infrastructure, reconfi guration of parking spaces, colorful gathering I would describe it as a high-end fl ea market; it offers new and vintage spaces for chatting with friends or just sitting and enjoying a sunny gifts, clothes, art, and home décor. Its theme is “Where New Meets Old,” day. But you might have to search for a parking space, especially on and you are sure to fi nd gifts or decorative items in either category, from Friday nights! The array of eating places has changed Toco Hills into a rustic to formal and elegant. Truly a store to delight the senses and one kaleidoscope of international choices! There’s Thai/Malaysian, Mexican, very different from what has occupied Toco Hills up until now. Indian, poke’, and mideastern, along with a new pizza place, a creative salad place, and others. You can still get bagels and sandwiches, beer It seems Toco Hills offers something for almost everyone – but I for one and spirits, coffee and pastry. And its many fans know Petite Auberge will miss some of my favorite haunts. Change is hard but inevitable, merged with Violette and became Petite Violette on Clairmont Road – a and gradually we will come to embrace and enjoy the changes at Toco little bit further to drive for authentic French food. ZONING UPDATE – A CALL TO ARMS! By Ted Beveridge In our last issue of The Signal, we provided an update on the worrisome business at 2459 Clairmont Road known as Warrior Spa. That address is a single family home zoned as a residence, and in DeKalb County, a private residence may not host a business that involves visiting customers without a special exemption. In other words, Warrior Spa appears to be operating illegally from a home in our neighborhood. The Sagamore Hills Civic Association (SHCA) board has notified county commissioner Jeff Rader and filed complaints with DeKalb County, but Warrior Spa continues to operate.

This is not a case of one of our neighbors quietly providing spa services from home. The home appears to have been purchased to be the second location of Warrior Spa. The company utilizes signage along Clairmont Road and has put striped parking in the driveway. You can visit their website at www.warriorspa.com.

Additional voices would help, so please contact our county commissioners or DeKalb County Code Enforcement to issue a complaint; the contact information is listed below.

Commissioner Jeff Rader Commissioner Kathie Gannon DeKalb County Code Enforcement 404-371-2863 404-371-4909 404-687-3700 [email protected] [email protected] [email protected]

In other zoning news, county commissioners considered the Gipson Company retail development at Briarcliff Road and Clairmont Road on May 22nd and deferred the issue again until June 26th. At the May 22nd meeting, the SHCA spoke out in opposition to the Special Use Land Permits (SLUPS) the development company is seeking. These SLUPS would allow for rezoning the property, adding fuel pumps to the proposed Race Trac, selling alcohol at the proposed Race Trac, and including a drive-through at the proposed Wendy’s. Further, the SHCA intends to oppose the development at the upcoming commissioners meeting on June 26th.

Zoning enforcement and changes are issues that will continue to affect us in Sagamore Hills as development continues around us, and the SHCA will continue to monitor and report moving forward.

A CORNER PARTY: NEIGHBORS GET TO KNOW ONE ANOTHER By Sandra Menes & Don Broussard Last year around June, several new families moved into Sagamore Hills at the corner of Alderbrook and Timberland (the intersection closer to Sagamore Hills Elementary School). None of us really knew each other except for a quick wave or “hello.” At the Newcomers reception hosted by Rene’ Kane in the spring, we connected and quickly agreed that we wanted to create a social event to get to know each other (and our more long- term neighbors) better.

An informal committee quickly formed and decided to start small and simple. The easiest thing we could do to get together was a “happy hour”. We divided up simple responsibilities: Diane McWilliams likes to develop graphic art on her computer and volunteered to make invitations; Sandra Menes and Aimee Broussard delivered them to about 30 homes in our immediate vicinity. Don Broussard helped with set-up, and “the Gregs” (Greg Adkins, Gregg Guertin) and Christy L. Adkins, offered their lovely home and backyard. It was all BYOB and potluck snacks. Sure enough, on the sultry evening of June 5, about 30 of us gathered to chat, find out about each other, place names with homes, and congratulate ourselves for a wonderful time. Everyone agreed to do it again and several expressed interest in coordinating or hosting a future event. We’re awaiting a Fall event to be determined, with a renewed sense of neighborhood and friendship for those who live right nearby. Thanks to all who came out, to those who helped to coordinate it, and to those who want to help us turn our neighborliness into friendships.
