Abstract: The effects of sex, injuries, season and site on the growth of the spiny lobsters Panulirus gracilis, and P. inflatus, were studied through mark-recapture techniques in two sites with different ecological characteristics on the coast of Guerrero, México. Panulirus gracilis occurred in both sites, whereas P. inflatus occurred only in one site. All recaptured individuals were adults. Both species had similar intermolt periods, but P. gracilis had significantly higher growth rates (mm carapace length week-1) than P. inflatus as a result of a larger molt incre- ment. Growth rates of males were higher than those of females in both species owing to larger molt increments and shorter intermolt periods in males. Injuries had no effect on growth rates in either species. Individuals of P. gracilis grew faster in site 1 than in site 2. Therefore, the effect of season on growth of P. gracilis was analyzed separately in each site. In site 2, growth rates of P. gracilis were similar in summer and in winter, whereas in site 1 both species had higher growth rates in winter than in summer. -

THE SUBMARINE'S SECRET WEAPON A Tender Tale by Randall Guttery Even though Japan succeeded in destroying or damaging much of the battle line of the U.S. Fleet at Pearl Harbor, it is a great irony of World War II that their own senior officers immediately acknowledged two major failures: First, that the U.S. aircraft carriers escaped destruction; and second, that the air attack had largely ignored the Pearl Harbor submarine base. Subsequently, with the main body of the Pacific Fleet incapacitated, U.S. submarines were virtually the only forces left to carry the fight to the enemy. As Admiral Chester W. Nimitz observed, "When I assumed command of the Pacific Fleet on 31 December 1941, our submarines were already operating against the enemy, the only units of the fleet that could come to grips with the Japanese for months to come. It was to the Submarine Force that I looked to carry the load until our great industrial activity could produce the weapons we so sorely needed to carry the war to the enemy. It is to the everlasting honor and glory of our submarine personnel that they never failed us in our days of great peril." The image that most people have of the submarine operations that ensued is one of hunting down the enemy on far-flung war patrols and then returning home victoriously with a broom tied to the mast - as often as not passing under the Golden Gate Bridge - to a comfortable port where liberty, rest, and recreation awaited. -

INTRODUCTION The Ninety-Second Congress has been marked by the unusual drama of a vigorous and persistent effort by the Legislative Branch to confront the President, eyeball to eyeball, over the primary issues of war and peace. Nowhere has the contest been joined in a more fundamental way, reaching to the very core of the division of powers between the two political branches, than in the bold thrust by several senators to codify the rules governing the circumstances in which the United States may go to and remain in war.' No less than 19 senators have introduced or cosponsored one of five different bills or joint resolutions seeking to define the instances when the President may use or deploy the Armed Forces of the United States.' Taken singly or severally, these measures purport to demark the sole conditions under which the President can initiate military hostilities and to restrict his authority to continue any such hostility beyond a brief period unless and until he has obtained a new and specific authorization from Congress.4 * A.B. -

First record and description of Panulirus pascuensis (Reed, 1954) first stage phyllosoma in the plankton of Rapa Nui By Meerhoff Erika*, Mujica Armando, García Michel, and Nava María Luisa Abstract Among the most striking crustaceans from Rapa Nui Island (27° S, 109°22’ W) is the endemic lobster Panulirus pascuensis, commonly known as the spiny lobster. This species is also present in Pitcairn Island and the Salas y Gomez ridge. The larvae of this species pass through different phyllosoma stages until metamorphosis, in which they molt to puerulus, a transitional stage adapted to benthic life. This species is an important fishery resource for the inhabitants of Rapa Nui. However, there are several gaps in the biological knowledge of this species, including its ontogeny. We sampled zooplankton to obtain first stage P. pascuensis phyllosoma during three oceanographic campaigns around Rapa Nui (April 2015, September 2015 and March 2016), individuals were encountered between the surface and 200 m depth with an abundance of 1.3 indiv/1000 m3. These individuals, along with laboratory hatched phyllosoma, allowed us to describe the morphology of this larval stage.
