Ángeles Gutiérrez García 2018 UNIVERSIDAD DE MURCIA DEPARTAMENTO DE HISTORIA DEL ARTE Imagen femenina en la literatura española del último tercio del siglo XIX: de Benito Pérez Galdós a Emilia Pardo Bazán Tesis Doctoral de Ángeles Gutiérrez García Director: Profesor Titular Dr. Manuel Pérez Sánchez SINOPSIS Esta tesis aborda el lenguaje estético de la moda y de la imagen que proyecta la mujer a través de sus elementos distintivos; la fuente principal será la literatura española de la Restauración: desde las novelas contemporáneas de Galdós hasta la narrativa de Emilia Pardo Bazán. Tienen cabida asimismo, otras obras de importantes autores, tales como Leopoldo Alas, Clarín, el Padre Coloma, o Juan Valera, Octavio Picón o Palacios Valdés.Se han determinado aspectos referentes al ornato, la belleza, la expresión suntuaria, el habitus y costumbres relacionados con las distintas clases sociales, todo ello imbricado en unas coordenadas sociales, antropológicas, culturales e históricas específicas.La definición y clasificación de diferentes tipos femeninos a través del vestido y de su entorno privado y doméstico han constituido una clave fundamental en este estudio, así como el fenómeno de la moda y sus débitos a la tradición y a los influjos foráneos. El término moda , su concepto y significado, es un sugestivo fenómeno que desde la antigüedad aparece en la literatura, que en sí constituye una importante fuente documental, un punto de referencia indiscutible desde la “Biblia”, “La Odisea”, la “Geografía” de Estrabón, los “Cantares de Gesta”, hasta la narrativa contemporánea; todo ello ofrece un muestrario completo de cómo se vestían los hombres en determinados momentos históricos. Una amplia recopilación de elementos suntuarios y de gala, vestimentas y fórmulas decorativas en torno al adorno personal, trascienden al historiador y estudioso que accede así a una base de datos imprescindible. Desde el Iluminismo, las corrientes clasicistas y prerrománticas apostaron por un determinado modelo estético configurado a través de las Poéticas de lo pintoresco y de lo sublime aunque ambas tendencias adoptarían posturas diferentes con respecto a la Historia; Winckelmann y Lodoli establecen rígidos y condenatorios principios, pero el Romanticismo histórico en el primer tercio del XIX, viene a reforzar el sentimiento de lo concreto, de la historia más enraizada y cercana al hombre. Es, precisamente, a lo largo del siglo XIX cuando la mujer comienza a integrarse en la vida pública y a formar parte activa de la historia; la Revolución Francesa marcaría un hito en cuanto a la actitud de la mujer con respecto al mundo que le rodeaba, la Revolución Francesa descubriría también que las mujeres pueden ocupar un lugar en la sociedad y en la vida política, fuera del ámbito estrictamente privado. Y en su espacio doméstico también la mujer es objeto de observación por parte del hombre; la retrata, no sólo a través de las artes plásticas, sino también por medio de la narrativa. Muchos son los títulos de obras literarias que llevan un nombre de mujer, muchos los argumentos que tienen como protagonista a la heroína: la mujer como símbolo, objeto de categoría estética, fenómeno observable desde el punto de vista médico o psíquico, la mujer como elemento social, su proyección a través de la imagen física: rasgos, ropajes o actitud…Toda la centuria reflexionará sobre la fascinación ejercida por la mujer y ella será protagonista absoluta de su drama. Desde la sublimación de un ideal hasta la inserción de la mujer en las realidades sociales del momento, la literatura acrisola los deseos, pasiones y frustraciones de la propia mujer. La evocación de la vida cotidiana, los repertorios suntuarios, la permanencia de la tradición en el vestir y el decoro en la mujer se yuxtaponen a un entorno histórico y cultural, a veces hostil, en el cual el ángel del hogar se rebelará bajo distintas fórmulas. ABSTRACT This thesis addresses the aesthetic language of fashion and the image that the woman projects through her distinctive elements. The primary source will be literature from the Spanish Restoration period: from Galdós’ contemporary novels to Emilia Pardo Bazán’s narrative. Other pieces from important authors, such as Leopoldo Alas, Clarín, Padre Coloma, Juan Valera, Octavio Picón or Palacios Valdés will also appear. Aspects related to beautification, beauty, sumptuary expression, habitus and customs related to different social classes have been determined, all arranged in specific social, anthropological, cultural and historical coordinates. The definition and classification of different types of female through their clothing and their private and domestic environment have been fundamentally key in this study, as well as the phenomenon of fashion and its debts to tradition and outside influences. The term “fashion”, its concept and meaning, is a suggestive phenomenon that since antiquity has appeared in literature, which in itself constitutes an important documentary source, an indisputable reference point from the “Bible”, "The Odyssey", the "Geography of Strabo”, the "Cantares de Gesta", even the contemporary narrative; all of this offers a complete sample of how men dressed in certain historical moments. An extensive collection of luxury and gala elements, clothing and decorative formulas about personal adornment, are revealed to the historian and scholar which accesses what is an essential database.Since the Age of Enlightenment, classicists and pre-Romantics opted for a determined aesthetic model, configured through the Poetics of The Picturesque and The Sublime, although both tendencies would adopt different postures in history; Winckelmann and Lodoli establish rigid and condemnatory principles, but historical Romanticism, in the first third of the nineteenth century, reinforces the concrete feeling that men are more deep- rooted in history and it is more closely related to them. It is, precisely, throughout the nineteenth century when the woman began to integrate in public life and form an active part of history; The French Revolution would mark a milestone in terms of attitude towards women with respect to the world around them. The French Revolution would also discover that women could occupy a place in society and in political life, out of the strictly private environment. Furthermore, in their domestic space, women are also subject to observation by men; it is portrayed, not only through the visual arts, but also through narrative. Many are the titles of literary works that have a woman's name, many stories that have the heroine as protagonist: the woman as a symbol, an object of an aesthetic category, an observable phenomenon from the medical or psychic point of view, the woman as social element, the projection of her physical image: traits, clothes or attitude. The whole century will reflect on the fascination exercised by women and she will be the absolute protagonist of her drama. From the sublimation of an ideal to the insertion of women in the social realities of the moment, literature purifies the desires, passions and frustrations of the woman herself. The evocation of daily life, the sumptuary repertoires, the presence of tradition in terms of dress and the decorum in women are juxtaposed to a historical, cultural and, sometimes, hostile environment, in which the “Angel in the House” will revolt in different ways.
