Diploma thesis supervisor Mgr. Lucie Podroužková, Ph. D. ANNOTATION This diploma thesis deals with British musical composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and his works. The first part of the thesis introduces Lloyd Webber’s biography, his close collaborators as well as his production company the Really Useful Group and description of all his works. The main part of the thesis is aimed at his musicals Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Jesus Christ Superstar , rather their origin and development, the main plot and their main characters that have many things in common. Both these musicals are based on topics from the Bible. The thesis also deals with the librettos and their translation into Czech. První část práce seznamuje s Lloyd Webberovým životopisem, jeho blízkými spolupracovníky, stejně jako s jeho produkční společností Really Useful Group a popisem všech jeho děl. Hlavní část práce je zaměřena na muzikály Josef a jeho úžasný pestrobarevný plášť a Jesus Christ Superstar , přesněji řečeno jejich vznik a vývoj, hlavní dějovou linii a jejich hlavní postavy, které mají mnoho společného. Oba tyto muzikály jsou založeny na příbězích z Bible. Lyrics by Tim Rice, Don Black, Christopher Hampton, Charles Hart, Usually done as a classic “stand and sing” revue, we’ve T.S.Eliot, Ben Elton, Trevor Nunn, Glenn Slater, Jim Steinman, decided instead to set most of the songs in our production Richard Stilgoe, David Yazbek and David Zippel of The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber in the scenes from the various shows. This gives our BFA Musical Theatre students the chance to act the Dean of College of Arts and Sciences characters as well as sing the songs – complete with costume changes! The story she relates is of a young dreamer, a man named Joseph—the same Joseph whose story is told in the Book of Genesis. -

Andrew Lloyd Webber interview: the second coming of Jesus Christ Superstar One sunny day last week, a group of very excited people were crammed together in a darkened room. They were the band and full cast of a new production of Jesus Christ Superstar – and this would be the first time that they had performed together. The event is the sitzprobe, or sitting rehearsal. "This is always my favourite day," says Tim Minchin, hardly able to contain his enthusiasm, recalling the magical moment his first musical, Matilda, reached this stage in its development at the Royal Shakespeare Company. Perhaps more surprisingly, Andrew Lloyd Webber, West End veteran of 40 years, who sits listening keenly to the score he wrote when he was 21, is every bit as thrilled. When the first guitar chords ring out, the chorus leap up and start dancing to the beat. The sitzprobe becomes a standing–room–only rock concert. As the soloists step up to a line of microphones, spontaneous applause ripples through the room. The cast are a varied bunch: Minchin, a musician and comedian, is Judas; Melanie Chisholm, better known as Spice Girl Mel C, plays Mary Magdalene; Ben Forster, cast from Lloyd Webber's own Superstar television show is Jesus; the musical theatre star Alex Hanson is Pilate; and King Herod will be played by the DJ Chris Moyles. Each leans into the music, giving it their all. By the time the entire company come to perform the famous Superstar chorus, the show has been brought to fierce life, no longer a dusty period piece from 1970, but a rock musical that still sounds unique. -

Verge 5 Belter 1 The Modern Musical: Recent trends and the narrowing gap between Broadway and the West End Christina Belter As I leave London’s Palace Theatre after a matinee production of Spamalot , I can’t help but notice the varied reactions of the musical’s patrons. There are middle-aged couples happily humming “Always look on the bright side of life,” as well as 20-somethings galloping across the street while clicking their recently purchased coconuts. Still, there are a few audience members who leave the theatre shaking their heads, as if to say, “Is this what musical theatre has come to?” Many critics lament the passing of the so-called Golden Age of musical theatre of the 1950s and 60s, and some wonder if shows like Spamalot are a death knell for the musical as an art form. Regardless of whether you believe that musicals have taken a turn for the worse or are simply keeping up with the times, it is undeniable that their evolution over the past 30 years has reflected changes in Western culture. In the 1980s, megamusicals such as Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera and Starlight Express dominated both New York’s Broadway and London’s West End. The 1990s saw musicals become increasingly corporate, with hits such as Disney’s The Lion King . In the 2000s, musical theatre has banked on the familiar, with “jukebox musicals” created around popular songs, musicals adapted from films, and revivals of old musicals. Today’s musicals are designed to appeal to the widest possible audience, and as a result, there is very little difference between London’s West End and New York’s Broadway. -

Born into a musical family, his mother Jean played the violin and piano, while his father William Lloyd Webber was a successful composer. 1968 Aged just 20, his first hit musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat , opened at a preparatory school in London. This was also the first collaboration with lyricist Tim Rice, with whom Andrew would work regularly for many years. -

CPLG TO TAKE CENTRE STAGE WITH ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER’S MUSICALS London, 23rd January 2019 – CPLG has been appointed worldwide licensing agent by Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Really Useful Group, to represent the composer’s best-known, award-winning musicals – The Phantom of the Opera, CATS and Starlight Express. The Really Useful Group, which is wholly owned by Andrew Lloyd Webber, produces, licenses and promotes Webber’s shows and music around the globe. CPLG will develop a cross-category licensing programme, including apparel, dress-up, gifting, paper and stationery and homewares, which celebrates the themes and captures the iconic logos of these well-loved shows. The Phantom of the Opera, the longest running musical in Broadway history, tells the love story of a masked figured who lurks beneath the Catacombs of the Paris Opera House. It first opened in October 1986 in London and is now in its 33rd year. It has been seen by more than 145 million people worldwide across 30 countries, and has received more than 70 major theatre awards. Since its world premiere in 1981, CATS has been presented in over 30 countries, has been translated into 15 languages and has been seen by more than 73 million people worldwide.
