Form guide • Qarabağ's only previous meeting with French opponents ended in a 9-0 aggregate defeat by Montpellier Hérault SC in the 1999 UEFA Intertoto Cup second round. Those are the only games played thus far between French and Azerbaijani sides in UEFA club competition. • In the nations' only encounters at senior level, France beat Azerbaijan 2-0 away and 10-0 at home in EURO '96 qualifying. Azerbaijan's only victory against France in a men's UEFA competition was a 2-0 success in the 2005 UEFA European Under-17 Championship elite round. Their other three age-group meetings ended in French wins. • Qarabağ have lost just once in their last ten European home games (W7 D2 L1) – 2-0 against Eintracht Frankfurt in last season's UEFA Europa League play-offs. • St-Étienne were unbeaten on the road in their only previous UEFA group stage campaign (W1 D1) – in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup – when they made it all the way to the round of 16. Trivia and links • Qarabağ are only the second Azeri side to feature in a UEFA club competition group stage. Neftçi PFK were the pioneers, in the 2012/13 UEFA Europa League group stage, recording three draws and three defeats. Qarabağ could thus become the first Azerbaijani team to win a UEFA group stage game. • Qarabağ had reached the UEFA Europa League play-offs three times before finally making it through with an away- goals success against FC Twente, who eliminated them at that stage in 2009/10, this time around. • St-Étienne striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel has struck nine times in 24 appearances in the UEFA Europa League proper, and 17 goals in 33 games including qualifying. The coaches • Qarabağ coach Gurban Gurbanov is Azerbaijan's all-time top scorer at international level with 14 goals. He played in Russia, but enjoyed perhaps his most celebrated years with Neftçi, where he later started out as a coach. In charge at Qarabağ since 2008, he led the club to their second title – after a 21-year wait – last season. • A defender for hometown club Olympique de Marseille, LOSC Lille and Toulouse FC among others, St-Étienne boss Christophe Galtier took up his current position in 2009, helping Les Verts to win the 2012/13 French Cup. He had previously assisted Alain Perrin and Richard Tardy, working in England and Greece as well as France. 3 Qarabağ FK - AS Saint-Étienne Thursday 18 September 2014 - 18.00CET (21.00 local time) Match press kit Tofig Bahramov Republican stadium, Baku Team facts Qarabağ FK Formed: 1951 Nickname: Atlılar (The Horsemen) UEFA club competition honours (runners-up in brackets) • none Domestic honours (most recent triumph in brackets) Domestic title: 2 (2014) Azerbaijani Cup: 3 (2009) Ten-year European record (UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League unless indicated otherwise) 2013/14: play-offs 2012/13: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2011/12: third qualifying round 2010/11: play-offs 2009/10: play-offs 2008/09: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2007/08: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2006/07: first qualifying round 2005/06: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2004/05: first qualifying round Records UEFA club competition • Biggest home win 4-0: Qarabağ v Valletta FC 22/07/14, UEFA Europa League second qualifying round second leg • Biggest away win 0-4: FK Banga v Qarabağ 30/06/11, UEFA Europa League first qualifying round first leg • Heaviest home defeat 0-4: Qarabağ v FC København 27/08/98, UEFA Cup Winners' Cup qualifying phase second leg • Heaviest away defeat 6-0: FC København v Qarabağ 13/08/98, UEFA Cup Winners' Cup qualifying phase first leg 6-0: Montpellier Herault SC v Qarabağ 10/07/99, UEFA Intertoto Cup second round second leg UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League • Biggest home win 4-0: Qarabağ v Valletta FC (see above) • Biggest away win 0-4: FK Banga v Qarabağ (see above) • Heaviest home defeat 0-3: Qarabağ v FK Jablonec 30/07/97, first qualifying phase second leg • Heaviest away defeat 5-0: FK Jablonec v Qarabağ 23/07/97, first qualifying phase first leg AS Saint-Étienne Formed: 1919 Nickname: Les Verts (The Greens) UEFA club competition honours (runners-up in brackets) • European Champion Clubs' Cup: (1976) Domestic honours (most recent triumph in brackets) 4 Qarabağ FK - AS Saint-Étienne Thursday 18 September 2014 - 18.00CET (21.00 local time) Match press kit Tofig Bahramov Republican stadium, Baku Domestic title: 10 (1981) French Cup: 6 (1977) French League Cup: 1 (2013) Ten-year European record (UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League unless indicated otherwise) 2013/14: play-offs 2012/13: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2011/12: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2010/11: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2009/10: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2008/09: round of 16 2007/08: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2006/07: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2005/06: UEFA Intertoto Cup third round 2004/05: did not take part in UEFA club competition Records UEFA club competition • Biggest home win 7-0: St-Étienne v KuPS Kuopio 01/01/80, UEFA Cup first round second leg • Biggest away win 0-7: KuPS Kuopio v St-Étienne 17/09/80, UEFA Cup first round first leg • Heaviest home defeat 1-4 twice, most recently v Ipswich Town FC 04/03/81, UEFA Cup quarter-final first leg • Heaviest away defeat 4-0 twice, most recently v Bohemians 1905 03/11/82, UEFA Cup second round second leg UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League • Biggest home win 7-0: St-Étienne v KuPS Kuopio (see above) • Biggest away win 0-7: KuPS Kuopio v St-Étienne (see above) • Heaviest home defeat 1-4 twice, most recently v Ipswich Town FC (see above) • Heaviest away defeat 4-0: Bohemians 1905 v St-Étienne (see above) 5 Qarabağ FK - AS Saint-Étienne Thursday 18 September 2014 - 18.00CET (21.00 local time) Match press kit Tofig Bahramov Republican stadium, Baku Squad list Qarabağ FK Current season All-time UCL QUAL UEL League UEL UEFA No. Player Nat. Hamburger SV v Viking FK PRESS KIT AOL Arena, Hamburg Thursday, 3 November 2005 - 18:30 local time Group A - Matchday 2 Something has to give at the AOL Arena as the two Group A winners from Matchday 1 meet looking to maintain perfect starts. Hamburger SV won their opening game 1-0 at PFC CSKA Sofia thanks to a Rafael van der Vaart goal, while Viking FK secured a fine home win against the 2004 UEFA Champions League finalists AS Monaco FC, Nkosinathi Nhleko scoring the only goal in another 1-0 success. •Despite beginning their European adventure in the 1960/61 season, Hamburg now face Norwegian opposition for the first time. The Bundesliga club (who qualified for this competition as one of the three UEFA Intertoto Cup winners along with RC Lens and Olympique de Marseille), are looking to complete a quartet of European trophies. •Hamburg have also won the 1976/77 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and the 1982/83 European Champion Clubs' Cup. •However, they were beaten 1-0 by Nottingham Forest FC in the 1979/80 European Cup final and lost 2-0 to AC Milan in the 1967/68 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final. The German side completed a hat-trick of losing major finals when they lost to IFK Göteborg in the 1981/82 UEFA Cup final, 4-0 on aggregate. •Viking have met German clubs in five previous ties in UEFA competition, and have come out on top only once, against 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig, now VfB Leipzig but then of the East German league, with a win on away goals in the 1982/83 UEFA Cup first round.

The pain suffered on that night in Paris by Didier Deschamps’s men and an entire nation remains all the more heartrending because of the newfound professionalism that Les Bleus conducted themselves with throughout the tournament. Karim Benzema antics aside, contrary to years of squad infighting, the team spirit inside the French camp was the strongest it had been since 2000. On the pitch, France proved that they are on the cusp of a new golden generation, with Samuel Umtiti, Kingsley Coman and Antoine Griezmann all shining. Although some of Les Bleus’ much touted young guns fell short of expectations, namely Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial, France’s U19 EURO win further confirms that the future is astonishingly bright for French football on the international scene. One would not be foolish to expect there to be some turnover of talent for the 2018 World Cup cycle, with Patrice Evra and others’ involvement coming to an end. Much like Les Bleus therefore, Ligue 1 too can expect a very different feel for the 2016/17 season. PSG have entered a new era after President Al Khelaifi’s obsession for progression in the Champions’ League failed to be adequately satisfied by Laurent Blanc, leading to the latter’s dismissal. Les Parisiens have appointed Unai Emery in Blanc’s place, who brings a new-age management approach that relies on a squad instead of a team of individuals, a charge often leveled at Blanc’s PSG.

  • 2018/2019 Ligue 1 Preview Guide
2018/2019 LIGUE 1 PREVIEW GUIDE As Ligue 1 begins again, there is a rare air of expectancy. No, there haven’t been the sort of blockbuster transfers of the likes of Kylian Mbappé or Neymar, just the usual flow of some of the league’s best players to England and Spain, in the form of Malcom, Fabinho, Thomas Le- mar, Issa Diop, and others. But there have also been a number of brilliant signings made under the radar, and given the recent record of French clubs in turning young players around for con- siderable profit, the league’s official new slogan “The League ofalents” T may be more apt than the casual observer may realise. Paris Saint-Germain, of course, remain prohibitive favourites for the title, but have enough weaknesses, particularly at left back and in defensive midfield as new manager Thomas uchelT toys with the idea of a back three. Still, though, this marks a decided summer of change for the champions, for whom Gianluigi Buffon is their only signing, a marked contrast from previous spending. Still, though, a full season of Neymar and further development from Kylian Mbappé should leave them well-placed to repeat. Away from the capital, Lyon and Marseille haven’t experienced much in the way of movement, with both clubs losing only a few spare parts, as Nabil Fékir’s mooted move to Liverpool failed to come to fruition. The additions of Léo Dubois and Martin Terrier follow on from their recent trend (Lucas Tousart, Tanguy N’Dombélé) of buying young players from other clubs, hoping to reap the benefits by selling them on.
