LYNN AND MAYA TRY AND TAKE CONTROL OF THEIR RELATIONSHIP WOES, WHILE TONI’S BABY COMES SOONER THAN EXPECTED IN THE SEASON FINALE OF “GIRLFRIENDS,” MAY 23 “…With A Twist” #115 --- Things don’t turn out quite how expected when Joan and William participate in a night of drinking, Lynn and Maya fight for their men and Toni schedules a c-section, on the season finale of GIRLFRIENDS, Monday, May 23, 2005 (9:00-9:30 PM, ET/PT) on the UPN Network. Sheldon Epps directed the episode written by creator and executive producer Mara Brock Akil. Joan and William try to piece together their drunken escapades from the night before and are pleasantly surprised by the outcome. But Darnell (Khalil Kain) has less luck with his drunken night, after confessing his love for Maya. As a result, Maya forces Joan and William to accompany her to his wedding so she can try and stop it. Toni goes into labor much sooner then expected, leaving her with no time to call her girlfriends. Meanwhile, Lynn acts on her feelings for Finn(Tricky), which makes her face the reality of their relationship. CELEBRATING SIXTY YEARS SCMS 1959-2019 SCMSCONFERENCE 2019PROGRAM Sheraton Grand Seattle MARCH 13–17 Letter from the President Dear 2019 Conference Attendees, This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Society for Cinema and Media Studies. Formed in 1959, the first national meeting of what was then called the Society of Cinematologists was held at the New York University Faculty Club in April 1960. The two-day national meeting consisted of a business meeting where they discussed their hope to have a journal; a panel on sources, with a discussion of “off-beat films” and the problem of renters returning mutilated copies of Battleship Potemkin; and a luncheon, including Erwin Panofsky, Parker Tyler, Dwight MacDonald and Siegfried Kracauer among the 29 people present. What a start! The Society has grown tremendously since that first meeting. We changed our name to the Society for Cinema Studies in 1969, and then added Media to become SCMS in 2002. From 29 people at the first meeting, we now have approximately 3000 members in 38 nations. The conference has 423 panels, roundtables and workshops and 23 seminars across five-days. In 1960, total expenses for the society were listed as $71.32. Now, they are over $800,000 annually. And our journal, first established in 1961, then renamed Cinema Journal in 1966, was renamed again in October 2018 to become JCMS: The Journal of Cinema and Media Studies. This conference shows the range and breadth of what is now considered “cinematology,” with panels and awards on diverse topics that encompass game studies, podcasts, animation, reality TV, sports media, contemporary film, and early cinema; and approaches that include affect studies, eco-criticism, archival research, critical race studies, and queer theory, among others.

This thesis explores these notions of empowerment as portrayed through a case study of the BET awards program Black Girls Rock!. Using textual analysis of the program as well as of online feminist responses to the program, this study presents a way of understanding the challenges to engaging in authentic Black girl empowerment through popular media. While such programs extend the efforts of Black feminist scholars and activists by doing the important work of resisting the abundance of negative representation in visual media with positive affirmation for Black women and girls, these efforts still render Black girls as helpless and perpetually at-risk.

B.A. HAMPTON UNIVERSITY, 1997 DECONSTRUCTION OF STEREOTYPES AND MEDIATED MESSAGES IN AFRICAN-AMERICAN SITCOMS Advisor: Dr. Josephine Bradley Thesis dated May, 2002 This study examines the images of African Americans in black-themed sitcoms and mediated messages presented here. The study was based on the premise that the images of African Americans on television sitcoms are one dimensional and comedic. A content analysis approach was used to analyze various television sitcoms. Definitions were used to determine what type of image existed using the foundation provided by Donald Bogle and Stewart Hall. The researcher found that although many of the African-American-themed sitcoms investigated represented traditional stereotypical images, there were mediated messages in these sitcoms, which offered a new and different perspective on African Americans. This suggests that African-American images on black-themed sitcoms are moving forward. Additionally, the researcher found that sitcoms depicting African-American life from a comedic point-of-view seem to be more acceptable in popular culture than those which depict life from a dramatic and/or realistic point-of-view. Common new girlfriend Continue On July 29, Netflix announced that it had acquired the rights to seven black-led sitcoms and would roll out those shows starting Aug. Among the sitcoms making a comeback is CW's Girlfriends. From 2000-2008, Girlfriends was one of the highest-rated scripted shows on television among African-American adults. The show was followed by friends, Joan, Mia, Tony and Lynn, as they tried to navigate adulthood. Now that groundbreaking series will soon be available to stream on Netflix, we wonder what the cast has been up to since the show went on the air? The cast of Girlfriends: Jill Jones, Trace Ellis Ross, Persia White, and Golden Brooks Jean-Paul Aussenard/WireImage Tracee Ellis Ross During the eight- season run of the show Trace Ellis Ross played Joan Clayton, a career lawyer who many considered the unofficial den-mother of his group of friends. While Girlfriends was not Ross's first acting project, it certainly soared its fame to new heights and set the standard for its future in the entertainment industry. After the show ended in 2008, Ross starred in several television series, including Private Practice, Bad Girls and CSI. She also landed a starring role in the BET comedy Reed between the lines, but only did one season. Then, in 2014, Ross was cast as Dr. Rainbow Johnson in the hit ABC sitcom Black-ish. Today she still stars as a female lead on the show and has earned countless awards and nominations for her portrayal.
