Focus on Global Leadership Team (GLT)

his is my first year as Global Leadership Team Coordinator. The role is to support clubs, District and Multiple District to grow their leaders and leadership. DG Kevin is committed to giving all Lions T as many opportunities to attend training as possible. It is now time for clubs to be thinking about who is going to be on the Board next year. My role is to assist with training those board members. As part of this I am keen to come to club nights to provide information, generate discussion or meet with Boards. I can guide members through the online training. DG Kevin and the Cabinet are also happy to provide information and advice. This is to support members to increase their understanding and check that their knowledge is up to date.

The District will be hosting training on roles later in the year. There will be two courses held in the District:  Stand and Deliver, which increases your knowledge and skills to be a competent presenter  Pathways to Leadership, which looks at members’ own development. These courses are a great way to meet other Lions and learn about the organisation. I am also wanting to support clubs to use MyLion/MyLCI. Currently the District has reported 13 activities serving 848 people. Members who want to get confident with online reporting are welcome to email me at [email protected]. Thanks for taking time to read this. Jules Ellis GLT Coordinator

As 2nd Vice District Governor I have had the pleasure of visiting Mosgiel and Taieri clubs last week. Both clubs made me feel very welcome and it is good to see both clubs in good heart, planning events for the coming months. The annual Presidents’ dinner was held in Oamaru on Saturday 27th July. It was a little disappointing to have only 20 of our 33 Presidents attending. The Presidents’ dinner is always held the last weekend of July, so Vice Presidents, pencil it into your diary for next year. It would be great to see more Presidents there.

Presentation of 24/7 Accessible Defibrillator (AED) Cabinets

n 8th August a presentation luncheon was hosted by the Balmacewen Lions Club at the Otago Golf Club to mark the occasion of the presentation of Defibrillators (AEDs) 24/7 accessible cabinets to O the 14 Dunedin City area Secondary Schools, this being the second stage of this project. In total some 10 AEDs and 13 x24/7 accessible cabinets have been provided with seven of the schools receiving a St John training package in the use of AEDs for 20 staff/pupils.

This presentation saw the culmination of a two year project being undertaken by the Balmacewen Lions Club in conjunction with St John. Based on a similar project having been undertaken by the Burgess Hill Lions Club in the UK, an approach was made to the Dunedin Secondary School Principals Association in 2017 to determine which schools would accept the receipt of an AED. Initially, six schools, Bayfield HS, Kaikorai Valley HS, John McGlashan College, , Queens High School and accepted the offer of an AED and supportive training from St John.

Knowledge of the availability of 24/7 secure cabinets that can be opened after a call to 111 and the entry code being made available prompted the Balmacewen Lions Club to further offer the provision of these cabinets to all Secondary schools and a further 4 AEDs to be located in high public use facilities such as Gymnasia, Performing Arts Centres etc.
