Edward Kanniah September 2014 i Abstract The following study seeks to investigate the impeccability of Christ from a historical/theological position. Two camps emerge on either side of the debate: Those who hold to the posse non peccare view which is to say, ability not to sin, otherwise known as the peccability view and those who hold to the non posse peccare view which is to say inability to sin, otherwise known as the impeccability view. While both camps affirm the sinless perfection of Christ they oppose each other in whether as fully human He could have sinned if He wanted to. It boils down to a case of ‘could have but did not’ or ‘did not because He could not have’. It is the view of this thesis that the non posse peccare view squares with both historical and biblical theology. We argue in chapter two by surveying Church councils up to the present time pertinent to this theme to prove that the history of this issue matters in that it establishes the relationship between Christology and history and by inference a major impact upon many outcomes in Church history. Our aim was to prove that this historical error goes a long way in distorting the gospel message. In chapter three we survey and evaluate the position from a peccability viewpoint while, at the same time, entering and notarising our points of departure. We have there highlighted the arguments peccability theologians utilise to defend their view and have criticised such from our Dispensational theology. In chapter four we then assess and acknowledge the argument for impeccability by proving the necessity of it for the exoneration of His Person and gospel. In the summit of chapter five we have surveyed the field of Scripture to have the final say on this issue and concluded in favour of impeccability. Twee kampe ontstaan aan weerskante van die debat: Diegene wat vashou aan die posse non peccare siening waarmee bedoel word, die vermoë om nie te sondig nie, andersins bekend as die feilbaarheidsbeskouing Terwyl beide kampe die sondelose volmaaktheid van Christus bevestig, neem hulle stelling in teen mekaar. Hulle argumenteer of Chrisus as volwaardige mens kon gesondig het. Dit kom neer op ‘n geval van ‘kon maar het nie’ of ‘het nie omdat hy nie kon sondig nie’. ‘ Dit is die siening van hierdie tesis dat die none posse peccare gesigspunt strook met beide die historiese en Bybelse teologie. Ons argumenteer in hoofstuk twee deur `n oorsig te doen van kerkkonsilies tot op die huidige tydik met betrekking tot hierdie tema om te bewys dat die geskiedenis van hierdie kwessie saak maak, wat daarin geleë is dat dit die verhouding tussen Christologie en geskiedenis vestig, waarvan afgelei kan word dat dit `n groot impak gehad het op baie uitkomste in die kerkgeskiedenis. Ons doel was om te bewys dat hierdie historiese dwaling baie daartoe bygedra het om die evangelieboodskap te verdraai. In hoofstuk drie gee ons `n oorsig en evaluasie van die posisie vanuit `n onfeilbaarheidsoogpunt, terwyl ons terselfdertyd pons uitgangspunte stel en bekragtig. Wat ons daar beklemtoon het, is die argumente wat die feilbaarheidsteoloë gebruik om hul opvatting te verdedig en ons het dit dan ook vanuit ons bedelingsteologie gekritiseer. The visible world delightful to the eye; the stars of heaven, the mountains of earth, the trees, flowers, the sea, the sky, are a picture-book in which to read God's glory, for all these things are imitations of divine beauty.

Christology (from Greek Χριστός Khristós and -λογία, -logia) is primarily concerned with the nature and person of Jesus Christ. ! Primary considerations include the relationship of Jesus' nature and person with the nature and person of God the Father. Christology is concerned with the details of Jesus' ministry -- his acts and teachings -- in order understand who He is in His person and His role in salvation. ! While we can derive some important facts concerning Christ’s ministry, character, and nature in the gospels, the most developed Christology is derived from Paul’s epistles. It’s from Paul we learn things like Christ’s pre-existence, prior to His earthly ministry (although it can certainly be argued the John’s gospel presents Christ that way in the opening words) and His worship as Lord (Gr. Kyrios) – {The Pauline epistles use Kyrios to identify Jesus almost 230 times, and express the theme that the true mark of a Christian is the confession of Jesus as the true Lord). On the heels of the Apostolic Age, there was debate in the early church, centering on Christology, arguing about the relationship between Christ’s divine and human attributes. By the second century, a number of opposing theories arose, factions were formed, and political divides erupted. THE FINISHED WORK OF CHRIST INTRODUCTION The idea that Christ's atoning work is 'finished' is Scriptural in origin; it is indeed based on a word uttered by our Lord Himself before His death on the cross. We read that Jesus said, 'tetšlestai - It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up his spirit.'1 Clearly, therefore, when Jesus at last reached the point of departure from this present earthly life, the work to which this word tetšlestai referred was already fully accomplished. Similarly the doctrine to which such plain Scriptural witness gave rise, that Christ by His death has done all that was necessary to reconcile sinful men to God, was equally clearly a precious conviction of many of our Christian forebears. They gloried in 'the finished work of Christ.' It was to them the heart of their gospel, the foundation of all their hope.

Were we born of the Holy Spirit and of the Virgin Mary?” C (c. Iul. imp. IV.87).1 Jesus is the Son of God, fully human and fully divine. At our worst moments, we might act like we are gods, but, deep down, we know we are frail, finite, mortal beings. Forgiving our enemies is the closest we get to performing miracles. Jesus is like us, but he is better than us, and his being “better” seems to have a lot to do with his divine nature. How, then, can we be expected to imitate him? Furthermore, if Christ’s virtue is a function of his divine nature, then how is Jesus truly human? If he is human and divine and we are merely human, it seems that we cannot be like him and he cannot be like us. This problem—we are expected to imitate a person who is at the same time human and divine—is not only one for spiritual groups and pastoral conversations. Theologian Gerald O’Collins helpfully sums up the problem classical Christology—two natures, one person— poses for moral theology: “How could we reconcile an absolute, intrinsic impeccability with Christ’s complete humanity—in particular, with his genuine human freedom? If Jesus could not have sinned under any circumstances whatsoever, was he truly free? Furthermore…[i]f, absolutely speaking, Jesus could not have disobeyed the divine will, how could he then have identified with the human condition?”2 Jesus’s invitation to “come, follow me” seems to be a kind of cruel mockery of our impotent ability to imitate him fully, much like Superman challenging us to a race.

    Activity 3 – God’s “perfections” Pretty much since the dawn of Western philosophy, perfect being arguments have been made: in ancient Greece and Rome, they were sometimes made about ‘gods’ in the plural; the writers of the Old Testament ascribed properties to God which we think of as ‘perfections’; as monotheism rose and polytheism fell in the first half of the first millennium CE, ‘God’ singular, typically the God of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, became the subject of perfect being arguments. In this section we look at a collection of perfect being arguments for a group of claims about God which, taken together, philosophers call “Classical Theism”. Rather handily, versions of these arguments all come together in Anselm’s Proslogion, but that is by no means the first or last place, or the only arguments with which, these features of God have been defended by philosophers. The sketches below aren’t based on any particular philosophers’ versions, which are more detailed and tend to appeal to whatever views about morality, minds and matter are prevalent when some philosopher makes the argument. Agency and Impeccability It seems like a good thing that we can think and act: that we are ‘agents’ with ‘minds’. Likewise, we tend to value things more the more agency, or mentality, they seem to have: so we think it’s worse to harm humans than to harm animals, and worse to harm animals than to harm vegetables. It seems, then, that rationality (the ability to think) and agency are both perfections. So God must be a rational agent.

    ABSTRACT Love, Beauty, Holiness, and Happiness: The Narrative of Union in Jonathan Edwards’s Theology Will Tarnasky Director: Thomas Kidd. Ph.D. Recent Edwards scholarship, particularly the work of Amy Plantinga Pauw and Ross W. Hastings, has firmly established Trinitarian union to be the consistent, driving theme of Edwards’s theology. In this thesis, I aim to contribute to this conversation by organizing Jonathan Edwards’s theology into the narrative of God bringing the saints into an eternally perfecting union and thereby making them supremely happy. I derive this narrative of union from Edwards’s dissertation, The End for Which God Created the World. My thesis evaluates the extent to which Edwards’s major theological, philosophical, and pastoral texts fit into and contribute to this narrative. The discussion follows a redemptive historical trajectory, driven by Edwards’s major works. I begin with Edwards’s theology proper. I then treat Edwards’s understanding of the fall and original sin, salvation by union with Christ, and the doctrine of the Christian life. I conclude by considering Edwards’s vision of heaven and hell. Throughout the paper, I use the centrality of union in Edwards’s thought to explore the relationship between love, beauty, holiness, and happiness.
