CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT

2005 has been a challenging and successful year for our centre.

In 2003 Netball Manawatu adopted a new strategic plan which moved the board to a governance role and employed two new staff. 2005 saw us continue along the path set in 2003.

Netball Manawatu welcomed two new staff members - Jillian Gaze, General Manager and Hayley Mitchell, Game Development Officer, joined Maureen Flannagan, Operations Manager at the beginning of the year. All three put a huge effort into their respective roles during 2005. During the year the successful Junior Tournament, the successfully run representative program and the professional prize giving and Manawatu Standard Cup final nights were just a few of the results of Jillian, Maureen and Hayley’s considerable efforts.

There were some changes in 2005 - Premier One attracted increased sponsorship from the Manawatu Standard and became the Manawatu Standard Cup; The thrilling showcase final night was a great climax to the netball season; Our Junior Netball was boosted by a new partnership with local company B&M Electrical and Panasonic; Our representative teams had successes; “Umpire your own club” was introduced as was fixed playing times for Secondary School teams; Intermediate Netball moved to Monday evenings and; Specialist Clinics were introduced for school teams. Some of these initiatives were controversial but with some minor fine-tuning all initiatives were a great success and will continue to move our centre forward.

A considerable effort was put into the attaining and servicing of our sponsors, and as a result there have been some marked improvements. However, the advent of Premier 14 rugby and the Manawatu team becoming part of that, along with changed regulation around gaming charities, meant that external funding was tight. So while most existing sponsors were retained and some new ones were gained, this area fell short of what the Netball Manawatu Board had planned to achieve.

It was with sadness that in October we farewelled Maureen Flannagan after 16 years of service in employment for Netball Manawatu. Maureen’s outstanding performance over this period is a big part of why our center has been so successful and we sincerely thank her for everything she has put into Netball in the center, the region and nationally.

Unfortunately, Hayley resigned at the end of the year and has relocated to . I wish to express my thanks to Hayley for making a great contribution to Netball in the Manawatu during 2005.

As I stated in the last Annual report, revenue still remains a concern. While sponsorship was increased during the year, Netball Manawatu continues to run at a loss. The board reviewed the strategic plan late in 2005. The general direction will be continued but a break-even is planned in 2006. We, as your board are dedicated to keep fees to a minimum; This means that there will be a bigger focus on increasing revenue opportunities in 2006 along with concentration on reducing costs, while still delivering the best possible service to the members of Netball Manawatu.

GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT

From a personal point of view 2005 saw a lot of changes for me – a new job, a new home, a new country, new friends and a new Netball Centre to be a part of.

For Netball Manawatu changes were also aplenty - A new General Manager, A new Game Development Officer, new vehicles, changes to the umpiring structure, new coaching programs, a new night for intermediates, new events, new competition times and new player pathways. Like all change there are periods of adjustments and hiccups along the way. However the membership has embraced these changes and as we move forward we are better for them.

2005 gave us many highlights both on and off the court and as you read through the following pages you will see just how successful the players umpires, bench officials and administrators of our centre have been. Manawatu continues to produce a high calibre of technical volunteers and players along with maintaining high operational standards.

Whilst our membership numbers remain somewhat stable we are very aware of the constant pressures and challenges we face as society and the economy change. We, as an organisation are ready and willing to move with those changes to offer our membership what they want and need.

Netball in the Manawatu is one of if not the most affordable sporting options for women and girls and we are excited to say that in 2006 it will also be an affordable sport for males as we start a new chapter.

In 2006, along with our current competition structure, we will also be offering more flexible options for members who find it difficult to commit to the time or money that is associated with our regular winter competition. We will be offering extended opportunities for other demographics including males, people with disabilities, older players and new mothers.

2005 was certainly a busy year in a multitude of ways – we hosted the Flyers and Rebels in a National Bank Cup game, the Western Junior Secondary Schools Development Tournament, Palmfeilds Pre-season Tournament, Palmfeilds Junior Tournament and the Netball Manawatu Showcase. Not to mention all our local competitions at Vautier Park, Arena and Feilding. We extend our thanks to the numerous volunteers who enable these events and competitions to operate so smoothly.

In addition we would like to take this opportunity to thank all club and school personnel who make the game of netball in Manawatu a success; your time, energy and passion for the game is critical to our future progress at all levels. We wish you a refreshing summer break and look forward to working alongside you in 2006.

Jillian Gaze General Manager

GAME DEVELOPMENT

The Game Development Portfolio is responsible for coaches, players, managers, selectors and official’s development throughout the game. Hayley Mitchell took on the Game Development Officer position in 2005 and has been a real asset to Netball Manaw atu. Her passion and expertise has flow ed through into the programs she conducts and co-ordinates.

COACHING In 2005 Netball Manaw atu placed a focus on the development of quality core coaching skills of the basics of netball. Through solid coaching of the basic skills our player base w ill improve.

Programme saw Sheryl Jones & Linda Liggins in Intermediate and Secondary Schools to work w ith coaches whilst Hayley and Jillian visited primary school classes to spread the Healthy Living message and w orked w ith secondary school teams to improve “trouble spots” in their play. We aim to further enhance these programmes in 2006 to deliver these services to an even greater number of schools, clubs and individuals.

Fun Ferns operated in Feilding, Ashhurst, and this year. We were pleased w ith the responses as many youngsters tried the programme w hich focuses on skill development in a fun a supportive environment. We look forw ard to continuing this in 2006 w hen once again w e aim to provide a quality programme at very little cost.

In 2005, as part of our Volunteer Recognition w e introduced two new aw ards for coaching: The Les Pyne Memorial Trophy – Coach of the Year, for outstanding achievements in coaching, w hich w as awarded to Yvette McCausland-Durie and; the Selby Cup – Spirit of Coaching, for outstanding contribution to Netball Manaw atu in the area of coaching and coach development, w hich w as awarded to Sheryl Jones.

Through the hard w ork of many and at times few the standard of umpiring is improving, many of our dedicated umpires achieving commendable theory and practical results. It must be noted how ever that on a whole, the three year plan to improve the standard of umpiring on all grades and levels has met the 2005 targets.

A Bench Officials system w as introduced at Vautier Park, but interest w as low. We intend on strengthening this programme for 2006 as part of our bench official’s pathw ay.

“Benches” were manned for finals of various tournaments held at Vautier Park along w ith the 19/21’s division at Steffensen Tournament. In addition w e supplied bench officials for Flyers games and Western events.

OPERATIONS

In 2006 the Operations Portfolio w orked diligently to ensure that Netball for all ages and level ran smoothly and consistently. Without the tireless efforts of these ladies Netball Manaw atu w ould cease to exist in the manner it does. At the 2006 Palmerston North Community Aw ards this group of dedicated w omen w ere rewarded w ith the runners-up aw ard in the Sport and Recreation category. This w as an honour that was truly deserved and w e congratulate Maureen, Sue, Beryl, Edna, Jan and Colleen on this achievement.

The operations portfolio is responsible for grading, result collation, and daily operations at each venue. Personnel are appointed to co-ordinate our satellite competitions at Intermediate level and Future Ferns.

The 2005 season saw changes made to the format of competition for many grades. Secondary School grades were given set timeslots and w ere contested over a two round competition w ith no re-grading, this required consistent performances for a top placing. Senior/Club grades w ere played in the afternoon and w ere once again played over tw o competition rounds w ith re-grading at the halfw ay point. All grades (w ith the exception of Pow a Products grades) contested a final w ith w inners and runners up trophies presented at prize giving by Silver Fern Jodie Te Huna.

Massey Netball retained their social grade how ever moved to Vautier Park each Saturday. Follow ing much interest regarding the relaxed uniform standards and males, Netball Manaw atu w ill be introducing similar social grades to open and secondary school level in 2006.

87 Future Ferns teams w ere delighted to have the opportunity to play their games each Saturday in B&M Centre. This is a popular option and is assisting in the development of this age group. Each w eek lucky players w ere also randomly selected to receive Mp3 players worth $400 thanks to B&M and Panasonic. Shaye Simpson accepted the position as Co- ordinator 2005 and must be commended for her dedication and professionalism.

Intermediate Netball made the change to Monday evenings and Sue Trim accepted the position of co-ordinator and out did herself in her s mooth operation of the grades. 71 teams enjoyed the ‘thrill” of playing under lights each week, and despite the sometimes chilly evenings enjoyed the season. Thank you to the schools w ho supported the concept and have given their feedback to improve this age group in 2006.

Premier One took on the new title of Manaw atu Standard Cup in 2005, and w as a great success. Talented players from throughout the district along w ith invitational sides from Haw kes Bay and Wanganui competed each w eek, culminating the in extremely exciting final which was the main game of the showcase evening.

Facilities: This w as the first full season for the new floodlights. Unfortunately there w ere many teething problems w ith the new automated system, how ever these seemed to have been ironed out and it w ill be full steam ahead in 2006.

During the off season PNCC w ill be resurfacing the back 5 courts and finishing the extended back carpark. Both of these upgrades should improve the enjoyment of netball in 2006.

We are very grateful to the follow ing persons for their assistance at Vautier Park each w eek: • Marching Manawatu for the collection of donations at the gate, • Robyn Chase and family for their work in the cafeteria each Saturday, Monday and during tournaments, • Arthur Scott our handyman, w ho maintained and repaired our equipment • Beryl O’Sullivan, Sue Trim & Edna Hansen consistent Vautier Park office personnel and Life members w ho consistently make themselves available for this duty. Thank you to all personnel w hom assisted in the Operational side of the sport. We appreciated all help offered and received.
