In 2003 Netball Manawatu adopted a new strategic plan which moved the board to a governance role and employed two new staff. 2005 saw us continue along the path set in 2003. Netball Manawatu welcomed two new staff members - Jillian Gaze, General Manager and Hayley Mitchell, Game Development Officer, joined Maureen Flannagan, Operations Manager at the beginning of the year. All three put a huge effort into their respective roles during 2005. During the year the successful Junior Tournament, the successfully run representative program and the professional prize giving and Manawatu Standard Cup final nights were just a few of the results of Jillian, Maureen and Hayley’s considerable efforts. There were some changes in 2005 - Premier One attracted increased sponsorship from the Manawatu Standard and became the Manawatu Standard Cup; The thrilling showcase final night was a great climax to the netball season; Our Junior Netball was boosted by a new partnership with local company B&M Electrical and Panasonic; Our representative teams had successes; “Umpire your own club” was introduced as was fixed playing times for Secondary School teams; Intermediate Netball moved to Monday evenings and; Specialist Clinics were introduced for school teams. Some of these initiatives were controversial but with some minor fine-tuning all initiatives were a great success and will continue to move our centre forward. A considerable effort was put into the attaining and servicing of our sponsors, and as a result there have been some marked improvements. However, the advent of Premier 14 rugby and the Manawatu team becoming part of that, along with changed regulation around gaming charities, meant that external funding was tight. So while most existing sponsors were retained and some new ones were gained, this area fell short of what the Netball Manawatu Board had planned to achieve. It was with sadness that in October we farewelled Maureen Flannagan after 16 years of service in employment for Netball Manawatu. Maureen’s outstanding performance over this period is a big part of why our center has been so successful and we sincerely thank her for everything she has put into Netball in the center, the region and nationally. Unfortunately, Hayley resigned at the end of the year and has relocated to Auckland. I wish to express my thanks to Hayley for making a great contribution to Netball in the Manawatu during 2005. As I stated in the last Annual report, revenue still remains a concern. While sponsorship was increased during the year, Netball Manawatu continues to run at a loss. The board reviewed the strategic plan late in 2005. The general direction will be continued but a break-even is planned in 2006. We, as your board are dedicated to keep fees to a minimum; This means that there will be a bigger focus on increasing revenue opportunities in 2006 along with concentration on reducing costs, while still delivering the best possible service to the members of Netball Manawatu. Dwight Graham Chairperson NETBALL – Everyone’s game Page 4 GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT From a personal point of view 2005 saw a lot of changes for me – a new job, a new home, a new country, new friends and a new Netball Centre to be a part of. For Netball Manawatu changes were also aplenty - A new General Manager, A new Game Development Officer, new vehicles, changes to the umpiring structure, new coaching programs, a new night for intermediates, new events, new competition times and new player pathways. Like all change there are periods of adjustments and hiccups along the way. However the membership has embraced these changes and as we move forward we are better for them. 2005 gave us many highlights both on and off the court and as you read through the following pages you will see just how successful the players umpires, bench officials and administrators of our centre have been. Manawatu continues to produce a high calibre of technical volunteers and players along with maintaining high operational standards. Whilst our membership numbers remain somewhat stable we are very aware of the constant pressures and challenges we face as society and the economy change. We, as an organisation are ready and willing to move with those changes to offer our membership what they want and need. Netball in the Manawatu is one of if not the most affordable sporting options for women and girls and we are excited to say that in 2006 it will also be an affordable sport for males as we start a new chapter. In 2006, along with our current competition structure, we will also be offering more flexible options for members who find it difficult to commit to the time or money that is associated with our regular winter competition. We will be offering extended opportunities for other demographics including males, people with disabilities, older players and new mothers. 2005 was certainly a busy year in a multitude of ways – we hosted the Flyers and Rebels in a National Bank Cup game, the Western Junior Secondary Schools Development Tournament, Palmfeilds Pre-season Tournament, Palmfeilds Junior Tournament and the Netball Manawatu Showcase. Not to mention all our local competitions at Vautier Park, Arena and Feilding. We extend our thanks to the numerous volunteers who enable these events and competitions to operate so smoothly. In addition we would like to take this opportunity to thank all club and school personnel who make the game of netball in Manawatu a success; your time, energy and passion for the game is critical to our future progress at all levels.
