  • 1. Introduction
    1. INTRODUCTION Research Context In a number of Middle Eastern contexts, the state primary and high school education systems have commenced using English literature texts. While these texts can afford improved access to English which is a highly valued commodity in these contexts, the use of English texts also has the capacity to provide increased access to a range of cultural values that may contradict local 'traditional' values. The state of Qatar is one of these contexts. While literature from other Middle Eastern states has revealed the emergence of tensions between the cultural frameworks offered by the English literature texts and those of the local culture/s, this research project aims to investigate the extent to which such tensions may also be present in the specific context of Qatar. English literature used in Arab English language classrooms often appears in the form of graded readers from Western publishers1 and inherently presents Western values, concepts, attitudes and behaviours to impressionable children. Can this Western English literature support the values of Islamic religion and culture? Who in fact, are the determinants of Islamic culture/values in the Qatari school context? From where does the power to influence curriculum come: Qatar’s governmental educational body, the Supreme Education Council (SEC), the school Board of Trustees (BOT), school leaders, influential parents, influential tribes, the local Imam or teachers? Further, do teachers feel there is a recognizable subset of English literature that satisfies

  • I Draghi E L'antidiscriminazione
NAVA/CINEMA – Age of the dragon I draghi e l'antidiscriminazione Imbattutomi, mentre smanettavo col telecomando, in un film fantasy in seconda serata, mi sono incuriosito.

Topics in Anglophone Literary Studies Thar She Blows! Moby-Dick Meets the Digital Generation Spring 2018 Wednesdays, 5–6.30 p.m., SR34K1 (Attemsgasse 25, basement) Dr. Michael Fuchs 1. About the Course “Call me Ishmael.” Even if you haven’t read Moby-Dick, you will probably know the novel’s iconic open- ing line. Likewise, even if you haven’t read Moby-Dick, you will have a rough idea as to what its story is about—Captain Ahab’s frantic hunt of a white sperm whale. The very fact that people know about Moby-Dick without knowing Moby-Dick testifies to the book’s cultural relevance and power. Indeed, as we will see, Moby-Dick is about so much more than the mere conflict between man and nature. This undergraduate seminar will consist of two main parts: In the first half of the semester, we will engage in a close reading of what many literary scholars and also the general public consider one of the (if not the) “great American novels.” In the second half of the semester, we will look at the presence of Moby-Dick in popular culture. Accordingly, we will watch movie adaptations, read comic adaptations, listen to music adaptations, but also explore some other texts in which Moby-Dick (and/or Moby Dick) plays a dominant role. Since the first part of this undergraduate seminar will pursue a close reading of Moby-Dick, the main objective here will be that students gain a deeper understanding of Moby-Dick and its socio- economic environment; in particular, students will come to understand (and appreciate) what might be termed Moby-Dick’s postmodernism avant la lettre, its rhetorical strategies, its ecological subtexts, its engagement with scientific discourse, and nineteenth-century whale-hunting.

  • Stephen Neal Senior Thesis Anthropomorphism and Zoomorphism
Stephen Neal Senior Thesis Anthropomorphism and Zoomorphism: The Philosophy and Prevalence in Pop Culture and in the History of Man Men are visual creatures. The eyes of man are designed to view the world in all its complexity and beauty. Human beings need to see things and give them a name before the object, animal, mineral, vegetable, et cetera, can be considered a reality. The ancients used to worship fierce deities and monsters that looked much like their human creators. Men today do the same thing with our deities and creatures of imagination, but today it is done with art, music, video, literature, and electronics. The philosophy of anthropomorphism is the application of human characteristics or feelings to an inhuman object (e.g. a car, desk, or pen) or organism (animal or a plant). It is philosophy that is still used today whether consciously or not. John McGraw says it best by stating, “we get „mad‟ at our cars (as if that could coerce the machine to perform) and infer every accident and every chance event in our lives as divinely sanctioned events. We punch the soda machine if it does not give us what we paid for, like we might punch a person who cheated us. The soda machine neither intends insult nor feels our injury” (24). Zoomorphism, however, is the application of lesser animal traits to a deity or a god-head. This is the more visual of the two philosophies, at least to begin with, as evidenced most strongly by the art of the ancients, especially in civilized cultures such as the Aztecs, the Romans and the Greeks, and the Egyptians.
