CORPUS CHRISTI COMMUNITY

At the center of our Catholic Faith is the belief in the Real Presence of in the Eucharist. The most important role of my priesthood is to celebrate the Sacrifice of the Mass and to celebrate the Sacraments. Since Christ is wholly contained in the Eucharist, it is the center of my priesthood AND OF THE Catholic Christian faith. Unfortunately, we often lose sight of or don’t appreciate the profound blessing that we have been granted. If we desire to become better Catholics and improve our relationship with the Lord, we must deepen our love for the Eucharist. How can we do so? One of the best and most underutilized ways is to turn to the Mother of Jesus, Mary. By getting to know her and studying her life, we can grow closer to Our Lord who is fully present in the Eucharist. In his encyclical, Ecclesia de Eucharistia, St. Pope John Paul II devotes an entire chapter to Mary, “Woman of the Eucharist”. As we celebrate Mary’s Assumption today, I’ll share some of his thoughts on how Our Lady can help us better understand the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist.

Scripture tells us that faith is “the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1). The Eucharist is certainly a mystery of faith and cannot be grasped by our limited human understanding. Accepting Jesus’ command to “Do this in memory of me”, requires us to deny our senses and humbly submit to His instruction. What better advice can we be given than the words of Mary at the wedding feast of Cana when she stated, “Do whatever He tells you” (John 2:5)? Just as He changed water into wine, He can turn ordinary bread and wine into His Body and Blood. By listening to Mary’s advice, we can accept (without fully understanding) the miracle that occurs on the altar and embrace Our Lord’s words, “He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life” (John 6:54).

By offering her womb for the Incarnation, Mary lived her Eucharistic faith even before the institution of the Eucharist. At the Annunciation, when Mary conceived the Son of God, she foreshadowed what happens to us when we receive Holy Communion. As a result, according to St. John Paul II, “there is a profound analogy between the Fiat which Mary said in reply to the angel, and the Amen which every believer says when receiving the Body of the Lord”. Although we sometimes forget the significance of our response to the words “The Body of Christ”, by replying “Amen” we are expressing our belief that Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist. Mary’s belief in the mystery of the Annunciation (“Blessed is she who believed”) anticipates the Church’s belief in the Eucharist. A simple way to think about this would be that the womb of Mary became the first tabernacle, and every time we receive the Eucharist, we become a tabernacle as well.

Finally, just as I preached on the topic of the Sacrifice of the Mass last weekend, it is impossible to deny that there is a sacrificial dimension to the Eucharist. The Body and Blood of He whom we receive in this great sacrament was sacrificed for our redemption. Just as suffering was a major part of Our Lord’s life, it was a constant theme in the life of Mary. Beginning with Simeon’s crucifixion prophecy at the Lord’s Presentation (“a sword will pierce your soul”) and culminating with Our Lord’s death on the Cross, Mary had a very real share in the suffering of Christ. In this encyclical, the Holy Father made the following profound observation:

“Mary is present, with the Church and as the Mother of the Church, at each of our celebrations of the Eucharist. If the Church and the Eucharist are inseparably united, the same ought to be said of Mary and the Eucharist.” (Blessed Pope John Paul II, Ecclesia de Eucharistia)

As we celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into heaven, it is good for us to remember her message to the many visionaries and those she has appeared to over the ages: “Go to my son”. Let us approach Him in the Eucharist with great devotion. Remember that a perfect way to adore Jesus in the Eucharist would be to come to our weekly times for Adoration here at Corpus Christi.

God Bless, Fr. Jerry

A steward is defined as a of Jesus who “receives God’s gifts gratefully, cultivates them responsibly, shares them lovingly in justice with others and returns them with increase to the Lord.” Stewardship, quite simply, is recognizing that everything we have and everything we are is a gift from God and being grateful and generous with those gifts. The Sacrament of calls us to a lifelong vocation of discipleship as Children of God made in His Image and Likeness. We are called as disciples to follow Jesus, to grow in holiness by the graces God showers upon us.

Our Catholic faith teaches that with so many gifts freely given to us comes the responsibility to share them. This is what stewardship is all about. Stewardship is not simply about making donations to the collection and special collections or a second collection to take care of the buildings and grounds. It is spirituality and a way of life that allows us to love the way Jesus loves.

Stewardship is a conversion journey of receiving God’s love and returning love to Him. A conversion requires prayer, reflection, and time to allow God to show us who we are and the person of love that we can become. Throughout the conversion experience, the disciple yearns to change and grow into the person God created them to be – a steward uniquely His own, but united in one Body through Jesus Christ. Stewardship transforms lives because of its love, and it is in this transformation process and conversion journey towards love that we give new life to the Church. “If you wish to come after me, you must deny yourself, take up your cross and follow me. For if you wish to save your life you will lose it, but if you lose your life for my sake you will save it.” (Luke 9: 23-24)

With Jesus as the foundation, certain elements, such as hospitality, prayer, formation and service, referred to as “The Pillars of Parish Stewardship” need to be in place within the parish structure enabling parishioners to convert to a stewardship life through the giving of self in time, talent and treasure. Recognizing that this conversion is primarily a call from God made possible through grace He bestows upon us, the task of conversion to stewardship is part of our response to discipleship. Together in our journey of faith, may God bless us and may we respond as faithful disciples – faithful stewards.

Next Weekend we will begin our stewardship renewal process. It is important to remember that stewardship is a way of life, and not a program. True Catholic stewardship involves an ongoing call to live as followers of Christ. It takes time to find and define personal goals. You can begin by examining your personal commitments to the parish. How do you live your faith in your daily life with your family and friends? How much time do you spend in daily prayer, going to Mass, or being involved in parish ministries and activities? What percentage of your income should you give back to God every week? What talents do you have that could be used to strengthen our parish family?

We hope that you will develop a better understanding of how stewardship is a way of responding to God’s call to discipleship. And with God’s help, changes will occur in each of our hearts as we devote ourselves to a stewardship renewal within our parish. Examine how you are currently responding to God’s call to stewardship. If God called you home tomorrow, would He proclaim, “Well done, my good and faithful servant”?

HOSPITALITY

“When I was a stranger, you welcomed me.” Matthew 25:35

Jesus Christ teaches that whenever we welcome one of the least of our sisters and brothers, we welcome Christ Himself. Parishioners of a stewardship parish seek to see the face of Christ in one another. With special vigilance, parishioners must seek out and welcome new members to the parish family. A stewardship parish is a welcoming parish regardless of the parish demographics: large or small - urban, suburban or rural. We are all prodigal children longing to be welcomed home. In a hospitable parish, parishioners and guests feel they belong and are appreciated. This is especially true if they were ever absent from the church. Hospitality leads to a sense of ownership among parishioners. This ownership and personal involvement fosters a sense of “belonging.” When parishioners experience a warm and sincere welcome, they in turn become open to give themselves to others. God is love. God gives His love to each one of us. As God loves us, He calls us to love one another. This Divine Love flows through the heart of the faithful steward to love others. When we are recipients of such love from others, we are attracted to follow this example. When others welcome us, we are open to welcoming others. This desire to welcome others is yet another gift of God. The most vibrant stewardship parishes are those in which parishioners know they are welcomed, which fosters a sense of ownership and personal involvement in lived stewardship to the parish family.

We have great hospitality ministries within our parish so you can share your time and talent. We encourage you to embark on a life of stewardship.

Reasons why HOSPITALITY is important: · Hospitality is not just about opening our doors, but opening our very souls. · Hospitality is doing small things with great love. · Hospitality is welcoming. · Hospitality develops discipleship - we are told to “Go therefore and make disciples.” · Hospitality transforms. Mother Teresa of Calcutta said, “Speak tenderly to them. Let there be kindness in your face, in your eyes, in your smile, in the warmth of your greeting. Always have a cheerful smile.” · Hospitality builds lasting friendships. · Hospitality is an act of faith. · Hospitality makes a difference. · Hospitably comes from the heart. · Hospitality means demonstrating Christ-like love to the community around the church. · Hospitality cultivates a real and lasting community.

Choir is about to begin their season - we would love to have you join us! We’ve grown quite a bit and are always looking for more voices to bring song to the Liturgies. If you are willing to share your God given talents to the people of Corpus Christi, and want to have a GREAT TIME doing it, our first rehearsal will be Wednesday, August 25th at 7:00-8:30 pm in the church. Please contact Shaun if you are interested.

Maybe singing isn’t your “thing.” Would you still like to contribute to the Music Ministry at Corpus? Sounds like ringing hand bells is the thing for you!!!! We are looking for more members to join our ensemble. Although no prior ringing experience is necessary, good musical skills and an ability to read music is required. The choir will rehearse on Wed. evenings from 6:00- 7:00 pm beginning August 25th. Please contact Shaun if you are interested.

Do you have a child who is interested in singing? Would they like to help enhance the Liturgy here at Corpus? The Youth Choir sings once a month at weekend liturgies. Any youth currently in 3rd grade or older are invited to attend rehearsals on Thursdays from 3:45-4:45pm beginning September 2nd. If your child would be interested in singing once a month, please contact Shaun.

The ministry of the parish cantor is to bring the song of the assembled community to life! Cantors' primary roles are to encour- age the congregation to sing and to proclaim the Word of God through the Psalms. Cantors lead prayer at all the liturgies. Cantors must have a pleasant singing voice, sing on pitch, strong but not overpowering, good sense of rhythm and tempo. We are looking for people with a strong presence to relay the word of God through song. I know there are many out there who having been waiting to be asked - so help me out by turning to your neighbor after church and tell them, “You need to see Shaun!” I’m here to help continue to develop the cantor for the Sunday liturgy. We have meetings once a quarter to go over new techniques and music and help each other grow. We are always looking for more cantors and if you feel you have the gift of cantoring, we’d love to hear from you!

Instrumentalists provide musical accompaniment for the cantors and choir at weekend Masses and special celebrations and enhance the overall sound of music during Liturgy. While people of various levels of ability are welcome to share their talents, a certain level of proficiency is necessary. As with accompanists, there is a wide range of possibilities for brass, stringed and wind instrumentalists to be involved in the Corpus Christi Music Ministry. There will be required rehearsals for instrumentalists around , the Triduum, and Easter. If you’re interested in lending your talents to the Music Ministry here at Corpus, contact Shaun for more information.

Who is welcome to begin the RCIA Journey? All people who are open to discerning their personal experience of faith and to learning more about the are welcome to begin the RCIA process. Many people come to an awareness of their desire to learn about membership in the Catholic Church in various and different ways. Often it may be a personal faith experience, overcoming personal difficulty and tragedy, or a relationship or discussion with a person of our community which leads one to begin this exciting journey. All that is truly required is a sincere desire to learn, to grow, and to develop one’s relationship with God.

The RCIA process can be applied to the following 3 groups: · Unbaptized: persons who have never been baptized and who need a process to help them grow in awareness to God’s call to conversion as well as ways to respond to that call. They are considered catechumens. · Baptized in another Christian Church: Those who were baptized into another Christian denomination and wish to enter into full communion with the Catholic Church. They are considered candidates. For baptized Christians interested in possibly joining the Church, the process will vary depending upon the depth of one’s religious and spiritual readiness. · Baptized but un-catechized Catholic Adults: persons who were baptized as infants and not given any religious instruction in the Catholic faith. These adults will be prepared to celebrate the sacraments of penance, confirmation and Eucharist. They are also considered candidates.

It is important to note that “candidates” do not always need to take part in the full process. If they have been actively living the Christian life in another denomination, they are likely to need very little catechesis and may be welcomed into the Church after a short period of preparation. Those baptized persons who have lived as Christians and need only instruction in the Catholic tradition would not be asked to undergo a full program parallel to the catechumenate.

In the case of children who have reached the age of reason (age 7), parents may sign them up for the sacrament of baptism and then enroll them in the parish school or parish Faith Formation program to prepare them for the other Sacraments of Initiation. Adult Catholics who were baptized and received their First Reconciliation and First Eucharist in the Catholic Church and are interested in the Sacrament of Confirmation should contact the parish office. These are Catholics who have been instructed in the Catholic faith but who have not received the Sacrament of Confirmation. They too may join the RCIA program to help prepare them to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation.

- Corpus Christi will soon begin a new journey in faith to share the richness of the Catholic Church and our parish family. We invite you to learn what the Church teaches, and be introduced to some of our parish members. These sessions are also opportunities for you, and others that you may wish to invite, to ask those perplexing and difficult questions you may have about the Church. These gatherings are for inquirers and are open to people who are unbaptized, as well as those who are baptized Christians from Protestant or Evangelical backgrounds. The first session is Thursday, September 2nd at 6:30 pm and we will continue to meet weekly on Thursday’s throughout the year. Please reach out to Laura Hulcher if you have questions or would like further information at 785-843-6286 or [email protected] or check out our website at www.cccparish.org/learn/adult-faith-formation.

Mrs. Kirsten Wondra, Principal Mr. Brian McCaffrey, Vice-Principal [email protected] [email protected] Mission Statement: “With Christ as our teacher, the Corpus Christi Catholic Community will prepare students academically, socially, and spiritually to be lifelong learners in a faith-filled environment.” CORPUS CHRISTI PARISH SCHOOL XEXCELLENCE IN ACADEMICS XDISTINCTION IN DISCIPLESHIP

As we approach a new school year, we wanted to share an exciting opportunity for you to share your gifts, time and talents for the betterment of our parish school ministry. In evaluation of our current needs, consulting with other Catholic schools and after much prayer and thought, we are forming a School Commission - our vision for a new driving force of advancement of the school. This would be in place of the previous School Council. The new School Commission’s mission and purpose will be thus:

The School Commission, rooted in the teachings of Jesus, will assist the pastor and principal to enact the mission of Corpus Christi School in forming excellent Disciples of Christ. The Commission exists as an advisory group with individuals who have special skills, resources, expertise, or who are otherwise determined to be knowledgeable in an area which would add value to the advancement of Corpus Christi School and its mission.

The structure of the Commission will consist of goal-specific teams assigned to specific tasks. Here are the teams we are forming: Help us shape our strategic plan, and then maintain a comprehensive perspective of how all teams are moving toward that mission. This team is charged with developing and encouraging stewardship opportunities for all school families. To assist school leadership and the Commission with creation, execution, and monitoring of a comprehensive program to retain current students and families, recruit and welcome new students and families, and market the school for optimal image and enrollment. To manage outreach to school alumni through newsletters, alumni events and social media, as well as to organize communication campaigns and to maintain and grow alumni contact data for support and fellowship. To develop and monitor long-term facility maintenance, capital improvement projects, and plant management plans for the school campus. The executive team will meet four times a year and will consist of the chair of each of the individual teams above. Teams should meet roughly once a month, and then team chairpersons (who would sit on the Executive team) will meet quarterly with Fr. Jerry and Mrs. Wondra.

Please consider the talents and gifts you have, and consider helping us continue to move Corpus Christi Catholic School toward our mission by being part of the School Commission! If you are interested, please contact the school office.

We thank you for your support of Corpus Christi Catholic School and hope you prayerfully consider joining our School Commission. Please let us know if we cananswer any questions.
