When a large, severe and unprecedented series of outbreaks of the saddled prominent and its allies began their rise in 1969 the concern of forest entomologists was drawn to the problem. Attempts to define the problem were divided into two categories. The first involved estab lishing a series of plots to measure the impact of the insect on the host re source. -

Black Turpentine Beetle and Its Role in Pine Mortality The black turpentine beetle, Dendroctonus terebrans has been known to cause considerable damage to pines on Long Island. This small, black bark beetle (about 1/5 to 3/8-inch long) is capable of causing the death of apparently healthy pines. Infestations have been found on the Japanese black pine (Pinus thunbergii), pitch pine (Pinus rigida), Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris). There have been reports of turpentine beetles on other pine species and spruce species. This pest is normally a secondary invader that attacks only those hosts, which have been initially weakened or stressed by other agents. On Long Island it has assumed the role of a primary invader in what appear to be healthy Japanese black pines. Black turpentine beetle (BTB) has also been observed to be a primary invader on Japanese black pine on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Fig. 1. Adult black turpentine beetle. (David LIFE HISTORY T. Almquist, University of Florida , www.Bugwood.org) The black turpentine beetle adult (Fig. 1) bores through the thick bark plates and phloem to the sapwood. The primary feeding site is the lower 6 feet of the main trunk, but boring has been seen in buttress roots also, where there was no obvious trunk injury. Injury to the trunk causes resin to flow, resulting in the formation of a pitch tube (Fig. 4, 5, & 6) as the resin hardens. An egg gallery is excavated on the inner face of the bark and scars, usually in a downward direction; and a row of eggs is deposited in this gallery. -

Wood' Abstract This taxonomic revision of all known species of Dendroctonus is based on an analysis of anatomical and biological characters. Among the anatomical structures found to be of greatest use in char- acterizing species were the seminal rod of the male genital capsule, the surface features of the frons, and the features of the elytral declivity. Characters of the egg gallery, position and arrangement of egg niches and grooves, and the character and position of the larval mines provided features for field recognition of species that were equal to, if not superior to, anatomical characters. -
CHECKLIST of WISCONSIN MOTHS (Superfamilies Mimallonoidea, Drepanoidea, Lasiocampoidea, Bombycoidea, Geometroidea, and Noctuoidea)
WISCONSIN ENTOMOLOGICAL SOCIETY SPECIAL PUBLICATION No. 6 JUNE 2018 CHECKLIST OF WISCONSIN MOTHS (Superfamilies Mimallonoidea, Drepanoidea, Lasiocampoidea, Bombycoidea, Geometroidea, and Noctuoidea) Leslie A. Ferge,1 George J. Balogh2 and Kyle E. Johnson3 ABSTRACT A total of 1284 species representing the thirteen families comprising the present checklist have been documented in Wisconsin, including 293 species of Geometridae, 252 species of Erebidae and 584 species of Noctuidae. Distributions are summarized using the six major natural divisions of Wisconsin; adult flight periods and statuses within the state are also reported. Examples of Wisconsin’s diverse native habitat types in each of the natural divisions have been systematically inventoried, and species associated with specialized habitats such as peatland, prairie, barrens and dunes are listed. INTRODUCTION This list is an updated version of the Wisconsin moth checklist by Ferge & Balogh (2000). A considerable amount of new information from has been accumulated in the 18 years since that initial publication. Over sixty species have been added, bringing the total to 1284 in the thirteen families comprising this checklist. These families are estimated to comprise approximately one-half of the state’s total moth fauna. Historical records of Wisconsin moths are relatively meager. Checklists including Wisconsin moths were compiled by Hoy (1883), Rauterberg (1900), Fernekes (1906) and Muttkowski (1907). Hoy's list was restricted to Racine County, the others to Milwaukee County. Records from these publications are of historical interest, but unfortunately few verifiable voucher specimens exist. Unverifiable identifications and minimal label data associated with older museum specimens limit the usefulness of this information. Covell (1970) compiled records of 222 Geometridae species, based on his examination of specimens representing at least 30 counties. -

Damage to picture frames can occur during exhibitions, storage, and travel, and is caused by handling, hanging processes, adverse environments, neglect, and irreversible restorations. Picture frames are maintained by a variety of preservation specialists, and despite their ubiq- uity they have not become the domain of any one conservation discipline, and there is scant literature devoted to their preservation interests. This paper will focus on the analysis of 19th century American gilded picture frames, as well as preventive care, modern modifications, and restoration/conservation treatments. The talk is derived from the cumulative experience in treating frames at the Williamstown Art Conserva- tion Laboratory (WACC). The paper will address frame nomenclature and the development of popular styles and con- structions of the 19th century. It will outline ornament forms and materials, and give an overview of period gilding techniques. -
