Together, let’s pray that the will guide our journey and bestow His grace upon us as we serve others. That He will grant success of our appeal, which reaches beyond ourselves and our parish, and gives hope to thousands through the ministries, programs, and services that enrich a -centered way of life.

Our parish Commitment Weekend is on February 8/9, please bring your intent card from home or pick-up an in-pew pledge envelope at Mass and come prepared to participate and courageously be part of the Good Works of our diocese.

Let us also pray for our parish and our diocese, that those in need of charity, service, formation, and education will be assisted with God’s promise of love and mercy and that by our witness and courageous response, those in need will know the same comfort and hope that we have in our hearts and lives.

Soon you will receive a personal invitation from Bishop Parkes to participate in the 2020 Annual Pastoral Appeal. Please review the brochure that comes with it and learn more about the good works of our local Church made possible by APA.

Your pledge or gift to APA on behalf of our parish funds these services that are essential to advance the mission of Christ and help those in need.

Our parish Commitment Weekend is in two weeks. While reflecting on your own blessings, consider how you can bring the joy of Christ to someone in need. As you receive your personal invitation from Bishop Parkes for participation, remember that APA not only assists our parish in fulfilling our financial commitment to the ministries, programs and ser- vices of our larger Church, but also helps to provide the physical, educational and spiritual needs of thousands that we could not serve from our parish alone. Your pledge or gift to APA on behalf of our parish funds these services that are essential to advance the mission of Christ and help those in need.

We’ll surf these waters for the following six or seven Sundays as texts for the Second Reading. We know from the (Chapter 18) that the church of Corinth was founded by Saint Paul, with the help of and Timothy, during his 2nd missionary journey. The apostle had arrived in Corinth from Athens, where he had made few con- verts. Let’s remember what we said last week about the difficult environment that Corinth represented for the preaching of the Gospel. Moved by the Holy Spirit, in this new city the apostle would leave aside the rhetoric of human wisdom and simply proclaim “nothing except Jesus Christ and Him crucified”. Paul spent over a whole year preaching in that difficult city. As was his custom, he preached, to begin with, in the synagogue – to Jews and Greeks who believed in the God of Israel. Later, because of the opposition he was meeting from Jews, he decided to concentrate on preaching to the Gentiles. Paul made many converts in Corinth – Crispus, the ruler of the synagogue, being one of the most prominent. He left Corinth shortly after some disputes, taking ship with Aquila and Priscilla. Approximately a year after this, there arrived in Corinth a man named , a very eloquent Jew of Alexandrian origin; he carried on the work Paul had begun. To judge from the information Paul provides in his letters, the Christian community at Corinth was one of his largest foundations. Seemingly, Christians of pagan birth were in the majority, most of them were educated and even well-to-do. After he had left Corinth, other missionaries and Jewish Christians representing different movements that were agitating the Church came to the city. Apollos had made a strong impression on the better educated minority of the Corinthian Christians. Jewish Christians originally from Palestine or Syria boasted of their attachment to Cephas (Peter) and won a following among their Corinthian colleagues. The majority of the faithful, poor freedmen and slaves, incited by the pretensions of the other fac- tions, boasted of their attachment to Paul, the Apostle of Corinth. The cry “I belong to Christ” is Paul’s personal protest against the factions in the community. The basic idea that Paul teaches is that the Church is a supernatural entity; it has been founded by Christ, Christ is the head, and it is Christ who governs it through His ministers. This explains why the apostle wrote what we proclaim in today’s Second Reading: «9I urge you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree in what you say, and that there be no divi- sions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and in the same purpose. For it has been reported to me about you, my brothers, by Chloe’s people, that there are rivalries among you. I mean that each of you is saying, “I belong to Paul,” or “I belong to Apollos,” or “I belong to Kephas,” or “I belong to Christ.”9»
