In vitro propagation is a useful tool for threatened plants conservation used in ex situ strategies. Thus, the aim of this work was to study the propagation in vitro of bulb scale explants of five endemic, rare and/or endangered Narcissus species from the Iberian Peninsula, treated with different PGR combinations. Initiation was achieved in half-strength Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal salts and vitamins, 10 g/L sucrose, 500 mg/L casein hydrolysate, 2 mg/L adenine, 10 mg/L glutathione and 5.5 g/L plant agar. In the multiplication phase, the highest bulblet proliferation was obtained in MS medium supplemented with 30 g/L sucrose and the combination of 10 μM 6-Benzylaminopurine (BAP) + 5 μM α-Naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) in N. -

Shortly after leaving the airport, we stopped by arable fields to watch a number of Red Kites, a Black Kite, several Honey Buzzards and a Short-toed Eagle. After a half-hour stop in Luz-St-Sauveur to allow shopping for lunch, we drove through the old spa resort to the Pont Napoleon. Crag Martins wheeled below the bridge and the silver rosettes of Pyrenean Saxifrage Saxifraga longifolia and the endemic Ramonda myconi could be seen on the cliffs. At the hotel we were met by our amiable hosts, Odile and Philippe, and after a quick change, set off up the valley for lunch by the river. Here we found Pyrenean Lily Lilium pyrenaicum in bud, lots of Early Purple Orchid Orchis mascula, Fragrant Orchid Gymnadenia conopsea, both the purple and yellow forms of Elder-flowered Orchid Dactylorhiza sambucina scattered in the turf, and the attractive orange flowers of Lathyrus laevigatus. -

Spurge laurel Other common names: daphne, daphne- USDA symbol: DALA11 Daphne laureola spurge, daphne-laurel ODA rating: B Introduction: The Daphne family consists of 500 species mostly small shrubs or occasional herbs. Most members of the group produce stem fibers and a few are used for papermaking in Asia. Spurge laurel was planted throughout the Pacific Northwest for decades. It is a native in much of Western Europe and the southern countries of Eastern Europe. Southern British Columbia, especially southern Vancouver island and in the Vancouver area, have well-established populations of spurge laurel. In Washington State, many west-side counties have escaped populations near urban areas. The hard seeds are consumed by birds and transported off-site Distribution: Oregon spurge laurel infestations are increasing. The largest infestations are located in Yamhill, Douglas and Benton counties. The Columbia River Gorge also contains outbreaks of the weed. Deciduous forests are the perfect habitat providing partial shade for the shrubs though conifer forests are equally suitable especially along the edges. Description: Spurge laurel is an attractive ornamental plant known for its spiraling evergreen leaves and greenish-yellow, bitter-fragrant flowers. Larger patches emit an unpleasant odor. Flowering occurs in late winter-early spring, producing clusters of blue berries during the spring. The one-seeded drupes are eaten and dispersed widely by birds and small mammals. Shrubs reach a height of 0.5-1.5 meters. This weed tolerates low light levels from partial to deep shade. It prefers better-drained clay loams and forest loams with neutral to acidic soils. Escaped populations form dense stands mostly under tree canopies. -

Tis report reviews the European, National, and Regional catalogues of protected species, focusing specifcally on the Orchidaceae family to determine which species seem to be well-protected and where they are protected. Moreover, this examination highlights which species appear to be underprotected and therefore need to be included in some catalogues of protection or be catalogued under some category of protection. Te national and regional catalogues that should be implemented are shown, as well as what species should be included within them. Tis report should be a helpful guideline for environmental policies about orchids conservation in Spain, at least at the regional and national level. Around 76% of the Spanish orchid fora are listed with any fgure of protection or included in any red list, either nationally (about 12-17%) or regionally (72%). -

From here we followed the milky glacial meltwaters of the Lutschine River to Lauterbrunnen where we boarded the train for the last leg of our journey to Wengen, perched high on the alp above. It was a short walk to our hotel where we had time to settle in and admire the amazing scenery. It had been a very hot day with temperatures in the mid-30s and, as we enjoyed our evening meal on the terrace, we were treated to a superb alpenglow on the Jungfrau. Day 2 Monday 27th June The hot sunny weather of yesterday looked set to continue, so we took the cable-car up to Mannlichen. We were immediately in a different world, surrounded by a panorama of mountains, dominated by the imposing north faces of the Jungfrau and Eiger, and with a wealth of alpine flowers at our feet. -

www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Complete chloroplast genomes shed light on phylogenetic relationships, divergence time, and biogeography of Allioideae (Amaryllidaceae) Ju Namgung1,4, Hoang Dang Khoa Do1,2,4, Changkyun Kim1, Hyeok Jae Choi3 & Joo‑Hwan Kim1* Allioideae includes economically important bulb crops such as garlic, onion, leeks, and some ornamental plants in Amaryllidaceae. Here, we reported the complete chloroplast genome (cpDNA) sequences of 17 species of Allioideae, fve of Amaryllidoideae, and one of Agapanthoideae. These cpDNA sequences represent 80 protein‑coding, 30 tRNA, and four rRNA genes, and range from 151,808 to 159,998 bp in length. Loss and pseudogenization of multiple genes (i.e., rps2, infA, and rpl22) appear to have occurred multiple times during the evolution of Alloideae. Additionally, eight mutation hotspots, including rps15-ycf1, rps16-trnQ-UUG, petG-trnW-CCA , psbA upstream, rpl32- trnL-UAG , ycf1, rpl22, matK, and ndhF, were identifed in the studied Allium species. Additionally, we present the frst phylogenomic analysis among the four tribes of Allioideae based on 74 cpDNA coding regions of 21 species of Allioideae, fve species of Amaryllidoideae, one species of Agapanthoideae, and fve species representing selected members of Asparagales. Our molecular phylogenomic results strongly support the monophyly of Allioideae, which is sister to Amaryllioideae. Within Allioideae, Tulbaghieae was sister to Gilliesieae‑Leucocoryneae whereas Allieae was sister to the clade of Tulbaghieae‑ Gilliesieae‑Leucocoryneae. Molecular dating analyses revealed the crown age of Allioideae in the Eocene (40.1 mya) followed by diferentiation of Allieae in the early Miocene (21.3 mya). The split of Gilliesieae from Leucocoryneae was estimated at 16.5 mya. -

Van Zyverden’s ALLIUM KARATAVIENSE Allium are in the same family as garlic, onions, chives and shallots. This makes gardeners wonder if they should include them in their ornamental gardening plans, as it conjures up images of supermarket produce. But because good garden designs are often made up of different shapes, allium’s rounded blooms make for high drama and interest in the garden. The Allium group gets more popular annually, from over 300 species to choose. They amaze everyone, and few plants create this kind of wow in the garden. We will be adding many new varieties shortly. Leaves and bulbs Commonly called Turkistan onion Deer and rodent resistant have a mild onion-like aroma when cut or bruised. About This Variety: Allium Karataviense is a compact, bulbous perennial that is ornamentally grown for both its foliage and its flowers. It is native to the Karatau Mountains (hence the specific epithet) in Kazakhstan. Broad-elliptic, spreading, gray-green, basal leaves appear in pairs. Leaves are sometimes mottled with purple. In late spring, a short but sturdy flowering stem rises from the center of each leaf pair. Each flowering stem is topped with a large spherical flower head containing tiny, star-shaped, dull pink florets. Flowers bloom in early summer. Flowers have a mild fragrance. Growing Instructions: As Alliums do not like wet feet, find a sunny location where the soil drains well or try to improve the drainage. The bulbs will rot in wet areas. Aside from that, almost no maintenance is required. Care Tip: Dig, divide, and replant bulbs after a few years of decreasing flower production. -

SRGC ----- Bulb Log Diary ----- Pictures and text © Ian Young BULB LOG 19......................... 9th May 2012 Fritillaria affinis tristulis One of my aims is to grow as many types of Fritillaria as I can in the open garden. I have been putting some out for a number of years now and reading the Forum I detect there is a growing interest in planting them this way so I will show some of those that are doing well or better outside than they sometimes do under glasshouse conditions. Fritillaria affinis yellow All forms of Fritillaria affinis grow very well in our garden including the lovely dark form, tristulis, in the first picture and the yellow form, above, that I raised many years ago from wild collected seed labelled as Fritillaria pudica! Both increase well by rice grain bulbils. On the left is Fritillaria hermonis - again a prodigious increaser by bulbils – hence there are always plenty of spares to experiment with. Fritillaria hermonis Fritillaria acmopetela Also producing copious quantities of rice grains is Fritillaria acmopetela – in fact I have a theory that if you grow a collection of fritillaries in pots for long enough eventually they all turn into either F. acmopetela or F. hermonis. The reason behind this is that unless you are scrupulous odd rice grains from these species will encroach into other pots through reuse of compost, top dressing or accident and once there they increase more vigorously than the original subject. These pictures show only some of the variation that can be seen in this species and why I choose to grow even bulbs that increase clonally as freely as these do, from seed.
