Kim Mason December 6th, 2020 Order of Service Ringing of the Bowl Welcome and Announcements Anne Truran Prelude Brightest & Best of the Sons of the Morning Carolyn Toft & Judy Meyer By Reginald Herber Call to Worship Rev. Kim Mason Hymn #352 Find a Stillness Find a stillness, hold a stillness, let the stillness carry me. Find the silence, hold the silence, let the silence carry me. In the spirit, by the spirit, with the spirit giving power, I will find true harmony. Seek the essence, hold the essence, let the essence carry me. Let me flower, help me flower, watch me flower, carry me. In the spirit, by the spirit, with the spirit giving power, I will find true harmony. Kim Mason Offertory What Sweeter Music First Unitarian Choir By John Rutter with the Rosewood Ensemble Homily Rise Up, Shepherd Rev. Kim Mason Hymn #237 First Noel The first Nowell the angel did say was to certain poor shepherds, in fields as they lay, in fields where they lay keeping their sheep, on a cold winter’s night that was so deep. Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, born is the king of Israel. They looked up and saw a star, shining in the east beyond them far, and to the earth it gave great light, and so it continued both day and night. Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, born is the king of Israel. And by the light of that same star, three magi came from country far; to seek a king was their intent, and to follow the star wherever it went. Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, born is the king of Israel. Benediction Rev. Kim Mason Postlude Carol of the Bells Rosewood Ensemble Music Notes Christmas Cantata (Sinfonia Sacra) Daniel Pinkham Daniel Pinkham was born in Lynn, Massachusetts on 5 June 1923. He studied organ and harmony at Phillips Academy, Andover, with Carl F. Pfatteicher; then at Harvard with A. Tillman Merritt, Walter Piston, Archibald T. Davison and Aaron Copland (A.B. 1942; M.A. 1944). He also studied harpsichord with Putnam Aldrich and Wanda Landowska, and organ with E. Power Biggs. At Tanglewood he studied composition with Arthur Honegger and Samuel Barber, and subsequently with Nadia Boulanger. Pinkham taught at Simmons College, Boston University, Dartington Hall (Devon, England), and was Visiting Lecturer at Harvard University (1957-58). In 1950 he was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship and in 1962 a Ford Foundation Fellowship as a choral conductor. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is on the faculty of the New England of Conservatory of Music where he is senior professor in the Musicology Department. In 1990, Pinkham was named Composer of the Year by the American Guild of Organists. In 1996 Daniel Pinkham received the Alfred Nash Patterson Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award for contributions to the Choral Arts. Daniel Pinkham passed away on 18 December, 2006. 1. Gloria in excelsis Deo Special Thanks to our guest musicians: John Korak Trumpet 1 Justin Duvall Trumpet 2 Edward Jacobs Trombone 1 David Gonzalez Trombone 2 Magnificat By Johann Pachelbel Special thanks to the members of the Rosewood Ensemble, Dee Sparks, founder Although principally known for his organ and keyboard works, Johann Pachelbel was a prolific composer of vocal, church and chamber music. He was also one of the leading progressive German composers of his time. All but two of his Magnificat settings are in the concertato style, and are wildly different from each other in that they share no formal design, and break away from the tradition of having the verses of text dictate the musical form. Yet in the Magnificat no. 13 in D Major, Pachelbel seems to be looking backwards. This Magnificat is in the style of an unaccompanied Motet, where each verse of text receives its own musical treatment, and although mostly written in four part homophony, it does contain passages of imitation and frugal like writing. Announcements Meet Interim Director of Religious Education - Lily Rappaport It is with gratitude that I join the staff team at the First Unitarian Church as your Interim Director of Religious Education, and with pleasure that I introduce myself to you. My family’s religious roots are Jewish, however my family rarely attend services in a synagogue. My memories of religion are mostly centered around celebrations and family gatherings during the holidays. It was only when I had children of my own that I discovered Unitarian Universalism and found my spiritual home. Read the full letter HERE.
