Groundbreaking Excitement: Construction on New SEM Building Begins, VRC to Follow

A groundbreaking ceremony on February 8, 2019, marked the beginning of construction on Cypress College's new Science, Engineering and Math Building, the first project funded from the $574 million Measure J bond, which was approved by voters in 2014 on behalf of the North Orange County Community College District. Providing state-of-the-art facilities to support the sciences was a top priority for North Orange County voters.

Madison Morris (left) and Raymond Pi Oliver (right) were named semifinalists for the highly selective Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship, which provides recipients with generous financial support to complete their bachelor's degree at a four-year educational institution.

Two Cypress College Students Named Semifinalists for Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship

Cypress College students Madison Morris and Raymond Pi Oliver are semifinalists for the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship. The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation announced that the pair were selected from a pool of nearly 1,500 applicants representing 369 colleges across 45 states and the District of Columbia.

Morris, a Placentia resident, is preparing for a career in the medical field. Oliver, from the city of Cypress, is part of Cypress College's (STEM)2 Program.

Cypress College Awarded Competitive $1.4 Million CCAP STEM Pathways Academy Grant for K-12 Dual Enrollment Pathway

A $1.43 million grant will facilitate a new K-12 dual enrollment pathway at Cypress College to educate high school students in the field of cybersecurity. Cypress College is one of six recipients — and the only one in Orange or Los Angeles counties — of the California College and Career Access Pathways (CCAP) STEM Pathways Academy Program grant from the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office.

Cypress College Foundation's 44th Annual Americana Awards Recognizes Citizens, Woman of the Year

On February 23, 2019, the Cypress College Foundation held its 44th Annual Americana Awards at the Disneyland Hotel Grand Ballroom, honoring and recognizing Citizens of the Year from the college's eight surrounding communities and 2019 Woman of the Year Jill Bolton.

The Americana Awards is the Foundation's signature event attracting roughly 600 guests. It is also the college's major annual fundraiser with proceeds supporting the work of the Foundation, including funding student scholarships, providing student book loans and emergency assistance, offering faculty grants, developing the college's endowment, and more.

Flying Team Earns Top Two-Year Honors at SAFECON Competition

Cypress College's flying team earned top honors for two-year colleges at the National Intercollegiate Flying Association's Region II Safecon competition held November 13-17, 2018, at Ernest A Love Field Airport in Prescott, AZ. Cypress College placed first overall for two-year colleges for the first time since 1978.

College Debuts Guided Pathways, Hosts 600+ High School Students at Connect2Cypress

More than 600 high school students stormed the campus on November 6, 2018, for the inaugural Connect2Cypress event. Students had an opportunity to explore educational pathways that connect with technical and professional careers. The college's approach to Guided Pathways was also unveiled.

Mortuary Science Program and Retired Professor Featured on A&E's ""

A&E's 12th season of "Storage Wars" featured the college's Mortuary Science Program — and retired Professor Dave McCament, specifically — in an episode titled "Nowhere to Formaldehyde." The episode was filmed on campus over the summer of 2018 and aired at 10 p.m. on January 30, 2019.

Speech and Debate Team Members Place 1st, 2nd at Pacific Southwest Tournament

Three members of Cypress College's Speech and Debate Team placed 1st in their events at the Pacific Southwest Collegiate Forensics Association's Fall Championship Tournament on December 1-2, 2018. The team competed against 39 universities and community colleges in the region.

Women's Volleyball Team Upsets LBCC for State Championship Berth, Ties for 5th

At the end of the fall semester, the Cypress College Women's Volleyball team upset Long Beach City College at home in a five-set thriller. The Chargers earned a berth to the CCCAA State Championship Tournament. In their first match of the tournament, the team fell to Gavilan College in four sets.

A Sense of Community: Disposable Camera Project Spring 2019

Keeping students engaged while on campus, promoting social connectedness, and providing a sense of community have proven to positively impact persistence. With this in mind, the college undertook a Disposable Camera Project, where disposable cameras were placed around campus for students to use. We invite you to take a look at a quick snapshot of campus life as seen through the lens of our students.

Cypress College's 4th Annual Yom HaShoah Holocaust Day of Remembrance event will feature a panel interview with Holocaust survivors Betty Cohen and Lou Fogelman. Cohen was a victim of Dr. Mengele's experimentation in Auschwitz, and Fogelman, Cohen's nephew, was a child survivor and now-successful record industry executive.

A special pre-event opportunity for students at 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. will feature Cohen and Fogelman, along with Holocaust survivors Piri Katz and Dora Zipper.
