“People with a disability and their families may experience discrimination and exclusion on a daily basis” (Disability Discrimination Act, 1992). The Queensland Fitness, Sport and Recreation (QFSR) Skills Alliance is currently delivering a number of Community Work Skills Projects across Queensland namely the Sunshine Coast, Ipswich and Rockhampton/Yeppoon. The projects are funded under the Queensland Government’s Skilling Queenslanders for Work Initiative which is investing $240 million over four years to support up to 32,000 Queenslanders getting into work.

The QFSR Skills Alliance projects involve groups of 15 trainees undertaking paid work and formal training to achieve a Certifi cate I in Construction qualifi cation. The work placement component of the traineeship has the trainees working on refurbishing sport and recreation club facilities, local council facilities, parks and recreation spaces, and vegetation management. Councils and clubs have committed to providing the materials and equipment for the work and the QFSR Skills Alliance trainees provide the labour component. These projects help the clubs keep costs down and get maintenance and refurbishing work done that otherwise rely on volunteers to do in their spare time.

Below are some examples of the great work the trainees have achieved for Queensland sporting clubs so far.
