  • Album Covers Through Jazz
SantiagoAlbum LaRochelle Covers Through Jazz Album covers are an essential part to music as nowadays almost any project or single alike will be accompanied by album artwork or some form of artistic direction. This is the reality we live with in today’s digital age but in the age of vinyl this artwork held even more power as the consumer would not only own a physical copy of the music but a 12’’ x 12’’ print of the artwork as well. In the 40’s vinyl was sold in brown paper sleeves with the artists’ name printed in black type. The implementation of artwork on these vinyl encasings coincided with years of progress to be made in the genre as a whole, creating a marriage between the two mediums that is visible in the fact that many of the most acclaimed jazz albums are considered to have the greatest album covers visually as well. One is not responsible for the other but rather, they each amplify and highlight each other, both aspects playing a role in the artistic, musical, and historical success of the album. From Capitol Records’ first artistic director, Alex Steinweiss, and his predecessor S. Neil Fujita, to all artists to be recruited by Blue Note Records’ founder, Alfred Lion, these artists laid the groundwork for the role art plays in music today. Time Out Sadamitsu "S. Neil" Fujita Recorded June 1959 Columbia Records Born in Hawaii to japanese immigrants, Fujita began studying art Dave Brubeck- piano Paul Desmond- alto sax at an early age through his boarding school.

  • RADIO ROCKWAY Odalys Cordero
RADIO ROCKWAY Odalys Cordero Preface It is with great pleasure that I share a Johnny Mercer inspired unit entitled: “Radio Rockway.” This unit utilizes interdisciplinary instruction within a musical setting. The target student audience throughout the curriculum is the 5th grade student population but can easily be adapted to middle and high school level students. The unit is typically completed in approximately nine weeks if music class is taught one hour a week. This unit is designed to educate students on the history and elements of Latin Jazz while simultaneously establishing a creative environment for student to create their own lyrics. On a personal note, I enjoyed witnessing the musical growth in each 5th grade class as they used the framework of pre-existing Latin Jazz songs and lyrically “made it their own,” so to speak. This was a great opportunity for Spanish speakers at an ESOL Level of 1 & 2 level to express themselves more freely throughout the progression of the unit. Overall Organization of Unit UNIT COVER PAGE Unit Title: “Radio Rockway” Grade Level: 5th Grade Subject/Topic Area(s): Studying a selected musical genre typically played on the radio: Latin Jazz. Designed By: Odalys Cordero , Florida International University Unit Duration: 9 Weeks Brief Summary of Unit (Including curricular context and unit goals): Three classes of 5th grade students will learn about the genre of Latin Jazz. This unit will be based on experiencing and creating lyrics to this particular genre. Each class will take on the role of a radio station with the assigned genre. Through these radio stations, students will perform their composition lyrics.

  • Santana IV | Nostalgie Modern Und Perfekt

Einfach klasse Musik. Damit ist alles gesagt. Das muß reichen. Hört Ihr`s, dann hört Ihr`s.

  • Bio OYE COMO
Oye Como Va was formed by Marcos Eduardo Mora Barrientos and Michael Pujado in 2017. As the musicians played crossed the Midwest and often crossed paths, they felt it was time to put together an array of talented artists that could pay tribute to the legendary artist, Carlos Santana. When Marcos approached Pujado he wanted the best percussionist in the region…and that guy was Michael Pujado from Chile. Pujado has been exposed to Latin rhythms from birth and it was naturally in his blood that brought life to his playing on the timbales and congas. Pujado has brought a true art form to Omaha in which he has accompanied artists such as Kenny G, Arturo Sandoval,Type to enter Quincy text Jones and many others. Pujado agreed to join, because Marcos’ family, musical roots started in Omaha in 1926 when his grandfather and brothers arrived and would play the local circuit for decades. So growing up around music and dance just came natural to Marcos, who eventually played in traditional Mexican/ Latin groups but then learned to play rock and soul music—he loved the guitar and his 20s he studied with Blues and R & B artists out of Kansas City and Chicago…eventually Marcos would play every major event in Omaha such as Jazz on the Green, Summer Arts Festival, Cinco de Mayo and many others—so this seemed like a better time than any to bring to Omaha a mix of talent that could portray Carlos Santana’s music. The group Oye Como Va is a high energy show that is filled with Santana’s classics and a lot of great solos that also feature Al Irions on the hammond, Tomas Morales from Panama on percussion, Natalie Huerta on drums, Michelle Irions on vocals, Tori Huerta on vocals, Joe Gonzalez on bass and Dennis Hopp on rhythm guitar.

  • The Sock Hop and the Loft: Jazz, Motown, and the Transformation of American Culture, 1959-1975
The Sock Hop and the Loft: Jazz, Motown, and the Transformation of American Culture, 1959-1975 The Commerce Group: Kat Breitbach, Laura Butterfield, Ashleigh Lalley, Charles Rosentel Steve Schwartz, Kelsey Snyder, Al Stith In the words of the prolific Peter Griffin, “It doesn’t matter if you’re black or white. The only color that really matters is green.” Notwithstanding the music industry’s rampant racism, the clearest view of how African Americans transformed popular music between 1959 and 1975 is through the lens of commerce. Scrutinizing the relationship between creators and consumers opens up a broad view of both visual and auditory arts. The sources we selected range from cover art and an Andy Warhol silkscreen to books on the industry’s backroom deals and the Billboard Hot 100 to a retrospective Boyz II Men album on Motown’s history and an NPR special on Jimi Hendrix for kids. Combining both sight and sound, we offer online videos, a documentary on jazz, and blaxploitation films. The unparalleled abilities of Motown’s music to transcend racial barriers and serve as a catalyst for social change through an ever-widening audience necessitates a study of Berry Gordy’s market sense and the legacy of his “family” in popular culture from the 1970s through today. First, the ubiquity of the Motown sound meant that a young, interracial audience enjoyed music that had been largely exclusive to black communities. The power of this “Sound of Young America” crossover was punctuated by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s affirmation in his “Transforming a Neighborhood into a Brotherhood” address that radio’s capacity to bridge black and white youth through music and create “the language of soul” surpasses even Alexander the Great’s conquests.

Revista Transcultural de Música Transcultural Music Review #9 (2005) ISSN:1697-0101 “Somos Cubanos!“ – timba cubana and the construction of national identity in Cuban popular music Patrick Froelicher Abstract The complex processes that led to the emergence of salsa as an expression of a “Latin” identity for Spanish-speaking people in New York City constitute the background before which the Cuban timba discourse has to be seen. Timba, I argue, is the consequent continuation of the Cuban “anti-salsa-discourse” from the 1980s, which regarded salsa basically as a commercial label for Cuban music played by non-Cuban musicians. I interpret timba as an attempt by Cuban musicians to distinguish themselves from the international Salsa scene. This distinction is aspired by regular references to the contemporary changes in Cuban society after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Thus, the timba is a “child” of the socialist Cuban music landscape as well as a product of the rapidly changing Cuban society of the 1990s.
