PAUL VI HIGH SCHOOL SPRING EDITION 2019 E-TALON SPRING EDITION PVI Performing Arts Presents: Spring Arts Festival 3.27.19

The Spring Arts Festival will be taking place on March 27, 2019 at 7 pm. Many people enjoy the Paul VI performing arts, and the dancers, choirs, and band members will be showcasing their artistic talents for an entire night. The chamber choir and chorale will be singing a “Phantom of the Opera” medley, “”, and an Italian opera, the “Va Pensiero”. The chamber choir is also singing a few other songs in addition to these three. This year’s concert theme is rock opera, and these three pieces are very fitting for these genres.

Mrs. Zerone, the chamber choir and chorale teacher, is very excited to put this show together because she has great ideas for special staging and costumes for “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Be sure to come support all of your friends and classmates in this year’s Spring Arts Festival!

When it comes down to the auditions, there are four styles you can audition in: ballet, modern, hip hop, and tap. Each audition is about and hour and twenty minutes. Project dance has a lot to offer from a fun experience of meeting new people, and getting to perform on stage here at PVI, as well as getting to sit back and watch dancers from our school and many others put their skill to great choreography. With project dance shows starting in May, all of the pieces for the show are starting to be put together. Stay tuned for more news and updates throughout the process of Project Dance!

On February 24, 2019, the masses tuned in to a star-studded event in aspirations that their prized and dearly-held film of choice would earn itself the coveted title of “Oscar winner”. Such film enthusiasts who found themselves enthralled and entranced by a television screen on this particular Sunday evening were, no doubt, advocating for one of the following “Best Picture” nominees: Bohemian Rhapsody, Green Book, The Favorite, Black Panther, Vice, Roma, or A Star is Born. However, regardless of whether or not one’s own preferred film had earned such a thrillingly gratifying title, a lack of earning an award by no means devalues the immense positive effects and empowerment that these films individually instill within its steadfast and disparate groups of supporters.

This year’s award ceremony, as has been an overwhelmingly prevalent story within the media, had an absence of a host; an occurrence that has not presented itself in decades. Despite this deficit in not

having a host to commence the celebration of film, the Oscars did begin with a performance of immense rarity. Amid the nervous energy of the actors and actresses in attendance of this particular Sunday evening’s event, a rare television performance by Queen (band members Brian May and Roger Taylor) with vocal accompaniment by excitedly roused all present, encouraging them all to join in singing along to “” and “We are the Champions”. With incited excitement at the expense of a riveting performance, actors and actresses alike awaited in repose for the announcements of categorical nominees and recipients of Oscars to be announced.

Following the spellbinding performance by Queen and Adam Lambert, uproarious laughter, at the expense of witty

humor inspired by the films nominated, continuously Brian May, Roger Taylor, Freddie Mercury, and John pervaded the theater in which the award ceremony occurred, Deacon circa 1975. emphasizing that the positive and uplifting spirit that the films evoke in the lives of many is far more embracive and powerful than a golden statue. Although the improvement and immense impacts that film has on the masses of society, earning an Oscar, without a doubt, is a wholly gladdening and satisfying experience, as much diligent work and persistence through hardship is recognized on behalf of all those involved; actors, actresses, producers, costume designers, set designers, and many more.

Throughout the announcements of the winners of Oscars for the various categories, Black Panther, Roma, and Green Book, which was titled “Best Picture”, had each earned themselves three awards. However, despite not grasping the title of “Best Picture”, Bohemian Rhapsody was granted four out of the five awards it was categorically delegated to. Thus, Bohemian Rhapsody had merited the most awards of the night, including the Oscar for “Best Male Lead Actor” for Rami Malek’s impeccable representation of Freddie Mercury. This was Malek’s first Oscar win, which he expressed all gratitude for to Queen and, more specifically, Freddie Mercury. Such acknowledgement and appreciation was eloquently vocalized for giving him the once-in-a- lifetime opportunity to give a glimpse of the life of an immigrant man from humble beginnings in who made himself a beloved name, despite being widely marginalized by society for his own cultural background, physical appearance, and theatrical and flamboyant persona on stage. In spite of his ever-prevalent rejection, Mercury, as beautifully and faultlessly encompassed by Malek, continuously lived his life impenitently even in the face and Rami Malek (as Freddie Mercury) astonishing the crowd at Live Aid. obstruction of great adversity.

2 Paul VI High School March Edition 2019

Not only did this intriguing and hypnotic biopic grant Malek with his first Oscar win, but the film itself had also won three other Oscars; “Best Sound Mixing”, “Best Sound Editing”, and “Best Film Editing”. Despite Bohemian Rhapsody earning the most Oscars, other brilliant performances by other actors and actresses are beyond worth recognition and mention. Alongside of Malek’s “Best Male Lead Actor” win was Olivia Coleman’s earning of the title “Best Female Lead Actress” for her performance in The Favorite. Society often places a broad emphasis on the lead actors and actresses of film, as they are seen as the leader of the group who carries the performance. However, as the Oscars present great (L-R) Ben Hardy, Roger Taylor, Rami Malek, Brian May, , and recognition to supporting performers, such actors and Joe Mazzello actresses are just as paramount to the integrity of a story as the lead. With this being so, an Oscar was presented to actress Regina King for “Best Actress in a Supporting Role” for her execution of a character in If Beale Street Could Talk. Along side of King’s win was Mahershala Ali’s famed and praised performance in Green Book, which he earned the award for “Best Actor in a Supporting Role”.

Although the actors unremittingly devoted themselves to the portrayals and embodiment of Queen’s four members, each of the actors (Rami Malek, Ben Hardy, Gwilym Lee, and Joe Mazzello) had expressed that they were not entering the Oscar theater with an, as expressed in a famed Queen song, “I want it all” attitude, they had triumphed and they, along with Queen admirers, had a sense of accomplishment, feeling that, “we are the champions of the world”. This specified outlook of being “champions of the world” is deep-rooted in the notion that Freddie Mercury outwardly presented during his career as a musician; to be exactly who one is meant to be and live freely and unapologetically despite the often unrelenting, negatively critical and futile opinions of others. In spite of the the Oscars that the film had won, the most gratifying aspect of movie production, as seen within Bohemian Rhapsody, is the extent to which an outcast of society, Mercury, has the ability to reign and positively impact the heart of the masses limitlessly through his own authenticity. Truly, Queen possesses a life and source of radiant light within the lives of many, and, of course, Freddie Mercury, the king of Queen, retains an eternal reign over the hearts and spirits of many individuals through his own Queen circa 1982 charisma and acceptance of self.

Samuel L. fool us in the result.” Jackson’s porcelain-boned evil mastermind Elijah Price, Bruce Willis’s Dehlia Rotchford ‘20 superhuman David Dunn, and Advanced Publications James McAvoy’s Kevin Wendell Crumb spend majority of the film in jail. McAvoy’s performance as Kevin Wendell Crumb, a man with 26 distinct different personalities, is the movie’s highlight. McAvoy jumps from personality to personality with skill and ease, without ever seeming absurd or over the top. The suspense builds as the plot unfolds, the men are being treated for their supposed delusions, as the villains conspire together, and the opening of a high tech new building looms as a sign of an impending showdown in front of the world.
