• NAU is located in Flagstaff, Arizona in the southwestern portion of the United States • Flagstaff is located approximately 230 kilometers north of Phoenix • The Grand Canyon is about 2 hours drive away • Flagstaff sits at the base of the San Francisco Peaks at more than 2,000 meters in elevation FLAGSTAFF WEATHER

• Winter Weather Advisory – December-February is the winter season for Flagstaff – There is the possibility of snow and you should expect cold temperatures, especially at night – Make sure to bring a hat, gloves, , etc. – It is often helpful to in layers so that you can remove or add depending on changes in temperature or location over the day • Living at Elevation – Drink plenty of water. It’s easier to get dehydrated at elevation and you might experience a mild headache, nose bleed, or dry skin. – Sunshine Galore! Flagstaff is a very sunny city, even in the winter. • In Person – This is a traditional class with in-person instruction and student attendance.

• NAUFlex – NAUFlex is a hybrid course format and designed for synchronous class attendance online as well as in-person attendance rotations. This class meets IN-PERSON requirements only if you attend in-person meetings. On scheduled days, you will attend your class in-person, on campus. Classrooms will be optimized for low student density and safe physical distancing. Before the semester begins, your professors will let you know which days you will be expected in the classroom. Class attendance rotations and policies will be established by the class professor.

• NAUFlex Fully Remote – This class is considered ONLINE for immigration purposes and delivered synchronously and remotely. Students and faculty simultaneously participate in class sessions remotely at specific times.

• NAU Online – NAU online classes are traditional online courses that were developed for asynchronous attendance. This means that class attendance and exam times are generally not set. Availability is limited for online classes, and classes are not available for every Flagstaff Mountain major of study. FEDERAL REGULATIONS

• Student Visa Regulations – You are required by the federal regulations associated with your student visa to attend in- person classes. – You cannot attend classes fully remotely. – You cannot live in another city or state while attending NAU. – ISSS will be scheduling mid-semester mandatory in-person meetings for all new students – Violating any of these federal regulations will result in termination of your student status. MINIMUM CREDIT HOURS FOR FULL TIME ENROLLMENT

• F1 Student Visa – Undergraduate • 12 credit hour minimum total – 9 credit hour minimum of in-person or NAUFlex » MUST ATTEND IN PERSON LECTURES – 3/12 total credit hours can be NAU FLEX Remote or Online – Graduate • 9 credit hour minimum total – 6 credit hour minimum of in-person or NAU FLEX » MUST ATTEND IN PERSON LECTURES – 3/9 total credit hours can be NAU FLEX Remote or Online • J1 Student Visa – Undergraduate • 12 credit hour minimum total – MUST ATTEND IN PERSON LECTURES • Eligible for NAU FLEX Remote or Online after meeting 12 total credit hour minimum of in-person classes ACADEMIC CALENDAR

• January 11 – NAU classes begin – All classes are online with virtual delivery via NAUFLEX for the 1st 2 weeks – Must be in Flagstaff despite virtual classes • January 25 – In-person classes begin – MUST remain in Flagstaff • April 29 – Spring 2021 semester ends LOUIE FINANCIAL ACCOUNT

• Your financial account reflects your tuition costs and mandatory student fees • A tutorial on how to access your account and make payments is available here. • You can make payments on your account from abroad or after you arrive in the United States • If you don’t make payment in full by the due date, you will automatically be enrolled in a payment plan that will spread the cost out over the semester – It is less expensive to enroll yourself in the payment plan than be automatically enrolled • Payment due date January 4th – Flexibility with this deadline for new international students – International students will have their tuition automatically deferred to a payment plan if there is a tuition and fees balance of more than $500 on January 18, 2021 STUDYING & LIVING IN THE UNITED STATES STAYING SAFE & HEALTHY

• All new international students must submit medical records that show they have been vaccinated against Mumps, Measles, & Rubella – Submit records to [email protected] – Submit scanned copy of immunization records (in English) or this form completed by your doctor – Can also submit blood immunity test if previously had immunizations but have lost records

• Never had the immunizations? – Schedule to have them in your home country and submit to NAU before arrival on campus – Attend the MMR Immunization Clinic on Friday, January 8th

• Failure to satisfy the MMR Hold will prevent you from enrolling in classes for future semesters. In the event you are unvaccinated and an outbreak occurs, you may be asked to leave campus as a public health safety measure JACKSCARD

• JacksCard is the NAU student ID and is used for – Riding the Campus Bus – Riding the City Bus – Meal Points – Cline Library – Building Access • Submit your photo for your NAU student ID card according to these guidelines. • Step-by-step upload instructions are available here. • The Center for International Education will pay the $25 printing cost for your 1st card. Replacements are your own responsibility. • Your card will be available for pick-up at the Center for International Education (Blome Building, 523 Knoles Dr.). SUBMIT YOUR INAU DOCUMENTS

• iNAU is the online system used by International Student and Scholar Services to manage the immigration documents of international students. • There are a number of documents you should submit prior to departure from your home country. You will use your LOUIE account to login and access the iNAU system.

• Upload scans of the following documents as soon as possible: – Passport Biographical Page – I-20 – USA student visa – I-94 (not available until after arrival in USA)

• Upload pre-arrival documents by January 2 to automatically enter prize raffle. TRAVEL TO THE UNITED STATES & ARRIVAL AT NAU TRAVEL TO THE UNITED STATES

• You are legally allowed to enter the USA up to 30 days prior to the date listed on your I- 20 or DS-2019 – Reminder - Not an ideal time for sightseeing across America • Check with your airlines about any mandatory testing, updated boarding procedures, or change to service due to COVID-19 • Carry your immigration documents in your carry-on bag. • Make plans to arrive in Flagstaff by Wednesday, January 6th to attend orientation and get settled before the start of classes

• Strongly encouraged to book travel directly to Flagstaff Pulliam Airport – Daily flights to Flagstaff from Denver (CO), Dallas (TX), and Phoenix (AZ) – Public transportation between Phoenix and Flagstaff is incredibly limited and it is more than 230 km distance between the cities – Uber from PHX is unreliable and will cost more than $200 one-way – Greyhound is not recommended

• CIE Airport Shuttle – Free airport shuttle from Flagstaff Pulliam Airport to NAU campus available January 4-6 • Not available from Phoenix, only Flagstaff – Email copy of tickets to [email protected] to sign up INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ORIENTATION

• International student orientation will take place January 7-8 – Orientation will be held virtually for everyone’s safety • Mandatory sessions including: – Maintaining Your Student Visa Status with International Student & Scholar Services – Mandatory In-Person Check-In with an International Student Advisor • Temperature screening & face masks required – Health Insurance – IEA Scholarship Meeting – MMR Clinic – Campus Safety – Getting Involved on Campus – Graduate College Orientation on January 8 • Register for international student orientation if you’re planning on attending NAU Spring 20 • Continue checking your personal email for regular updates from [email protected] QUARANTINE FOR NAU CAMPUS DORMITORIES MANDATORY QUARANTINE FOR NAU DORMITORIES

• NAU dormitories open for new international student arrivals on January 5-6 • Move into temporary quarantine housing upon arrival – University housing policy for those living in NAU dormitories. Does not apply to private apartment communities (Skyview, The Suites, Hilltop, etc.) – Not able to leave building except to seek medical care while in quarantine – Even with a negative test from abroad, you will be required to quarantine – Even if you have previously tested positive for COVID-19, you will be required to quarantine • 1st COVID test on campus within the first few days – If negative, remain in NAU quarantine housing – If positive, move to NAU isolation housing • 2nd COVID test on campus after approximately 1 week in quarantine – If negative, released from quarantine and move into assigned campus dormitory for semester – If positive, move into NAU isolation housing MEETING ALL NEEDS FOR QUARANTINED STUDENTS

• Bedding – Sheets & pillows provided – You are welcome to pre-order a comforter/blanket from Target, Amazon, etc. and ship it to CIE • ATTN: Jacob Butler, 523 S Knoles Drive, Center for International Education, Flagstaff, AZ 86011 • Email us before shipping so we know to expect the package • We will then have it available to you for move-in • Bath – Towels and wash cloth provided – Toilet paper provided – Consider packing travel size body wash/soap, hair shampoo/conditioner, toothpaste, etc.

• Technology – Encouraged to bring your own laptop or tablet. – Let CIE know if you do not have access to one, and we will work to get you a rental computer from Cline Library for your time in quarantine FOOD IN QUARANTINE

• CIE will provide each student in quarantine a welcome bag – Fruits, chips, soup, etc. to get you through your first night and day • Students with a meal-plan are able to order from NAU campus dining through online website. Food will be delivered to your door. • Students are also welcome to order from any Flagstaff restaurant through Uber Eats, Postmates, Grubhub, etc. • Students may also order groceries online and arrange for them to be picked up and delivered.
