by Murray Robertson IT’S a big week for lambing around the region as the ewes mated around April 9 have their youngsters arrive in the world. AgFirst consultant Peter Andrew said this week and next is when the largest number of ewes deliver their lambs. “This high number of ewes lambing will continue for another week, so we don’t really want a storm just now,” Mr Andrew said. “So, fingers crossed. “So far this winter the weather has been favourable for lambing with mild temperatures and not many big southerly storms,” he said. “Grass growth over winter has been only average considering the favourable weather at times. “Farmers suspect the dry soils at times have been the problem, but farmers should have enough to keep the mums and their new arrivals going into spring. “It is still a positive with spring started and sunshine hours getting longer each day,” Mr Andrew said. “Docking has just started on the early lambing mobs and all is going to plan with good survival being reported.”

OBITUARY Errol Burr

GISBORNE patients of colour therapist Errol Burr followed him to New Plymouth in such numbers that he felt compelled to return. It was a measure of the respect and affection in which he was held that friends and patients helped him set up house in Stanley Road in such a way that he could conduct his practice from his home. In all, Errol Burr was Gisborne’s “colour man” for over 40 years. He retired from practice five years ago and died on August 1. He would have been 76 this month. Relatives and friends recall a quiet, gentle man with a dry sense of humour, a love of ham radio and ballroom dancing, and a passion for his calling. Errol John Burr was born in Thames in 1945, the youngest of three children of Arthur John (Jack) and Beatrice May Burr. Jack and May Burr had come from New Plymouth with their eldest child Alvin to run the Tararu Store on the northern outskirts of Thames, and had two more children — Beverley and Errol. CONTACTLESS DELIVERY: A baby fur seal went knocking on a Te Awanga door on Tuesday night and found itself nose to nose with a furry friend in the morning. Bronwyn Trafford, a Te Awanga resident, woke on Wednesday morning to a surprise in the form of a small seal on her doorstep. “My husband heard a scuffle last night and this morning when we pulled the curtain we found it on our doorstep,” she said. “We checked our video surveillance and saw it making its way up to our driveway at 11.30pm before it settled in its sleeping possie for the night in front of our doors.” The Trafford family has a blue-grey Staffy dog, which took a shine to the seal (kekeno) through the glass door. “We have a Staffy and it looks quite similar to the seal, it’s about the same size. This morning our Staffy has had his nose up against the glass looking out at the seal, they’ve been nose to nose against the door” she said. Trafford reported that the seal seems happy in the beachside neighbourhood, having taken up residence in the community for the duration of lockdown.“The seal’s been around for over three weeks in the area, lots of kids have been finding it sitting around or swimming in the lagoon opposite our place,” she said.“We haven’t seen its mum but it doesn’t look in poor condition, it’s been really friendly and everyone’s dogs have been steering clear,” she said. SINGLE RELEASE: Gisborne band Lazy Fifty dropped their latest single last week in the lead up to their album release in November. The single, My Hand, is the second single available from their new album 2021: A LAZY ODYSSEY. My Hand was inspired by the popular Netflix series Peaky Blinders, which the video gives a nod to while also being as Kiwi as they come as it was shot in Tairawhiti. The group recorded at Tim Finn’s Roundhead Studios in Auckland with producer Greg Te Tairāwhiti Arts Festival Haver who has worked with The Feelers, Opshop, and Troy Kingi. The album, 2021: A LAZY ODYSSEY, is set to be released on La Vie En Rose November 1. Adrian Athy is on vocals and guitar, Ryan Raggett slaps the bass and Ali Sochacki is on the drums. Lazy Fifty were due to go on tour with UNI-FI this month, but have had to postpone the Smash gig until Friday, November 12. Tickets already Friday October 8th, 9.00pm sold are valid for this new date. Picture supplied
