Working in conjunction with 'Victoria Wood's Literary Estate', Bury Art Museum & Sculpture Centre is delighted to share original scripts, song sheets, photos and costumes all once belonging to Victoria Wood, brought together in this exhibition to remember and celebrate her life. The exhibition in Bury opens on Saturday 8 September, and among the items featured are: * The suitcase used by Victoria when doing her stand up shows which includes her make up box and make-up, and the iconic yellow beret worn by her in the Kimberley Friends gags * Notebooks full of Victoria's ideas, and original lyrics for the song Barry and Freda (“Let's do it”) * Photos from her childhood, teenage years and as a student at Birmingham University, and her appearance on New Faces in the 1970s * Costumes from Victoria's Christmas special 'Victoria Wood with all the Trimmings' worn by Victoria as Anne Widdecombe, Maxine Peake, Alan Rickman and Richard E. A REVIEW OF THE GRAYSHOTT STAGERS PRODUCTION OF “ACORN ANTIQUES” 25TH TO 28TH MAY 2016 I wonder if, like me, you can remember those wonderfully entertaining weekly TV send-ups in the mid-1980s under the collective heading “Victoria Wood – As seen on TV”? Miss Wood developed one of these send-ups into a musical play - and “Acorn Antiques” was born! When it hit the West End in 2005, it had a sell-out season, earning several Olivier Award nominations, and featured Julie Walters and Celia Imrie in the starring roles of Mrs Overall and Miss Babs. At that time, Quentin Letts of the Daily Mail reported that “Acorn Antiques could well become a cult hit” – and many people now believe it has! Its revival the following year resulted in a successful UK tour with a slimmer version of the overly lengthy original. Whether it’s because of a love for Miss Wood herself, who met a sad and premature death recently, or a pleasure in recounting the TV sketches that she wrote, the Stagers recent production also proved immensely popular at the box office Essentially, the show is a satire on what Miss Wood saw as second-rate TV soaps – with digs at ATV’s “Crossroads” and the radio soap “Waggoners Walk”, but she also grabbed the opportunity to take a swipe or two at more current soaps, particularly “Eastenders” and “Coronation Street”. “Acorn Antiques” typifies Miss Wood’s northern humour, mixed with a disregard for political correctness and social sensitivity. The script is alive with witty one liners and sexual innuendoes, but at the same time it shows the broad range of her talent.

Talent was first commissioned for the Crucible Studio in 1978, four years after Victoria auditioned for and won New Faces. It was her first play. Following critical acclaim, the show transferred to London in 1979 and was broadcast on television that same year. Over the course of her dazzling career at the top of British comedy – cut tragically short by her death in 2016 – she returned many times to writing for the stage. We’re proud that Talent serves as a reminder of Sheffield Theatres’ long-term dedication to championing exciting artists at the start of their careers, and amplifying new and evolving voices. This feels more vital than ever, and this new production, 43 years later, comes after The Together Season Festival – a two-week celebration of local artists making new work on the Crucible stage. Disney’s The Lion King announces casting for UK and Ireland tour Monday 3 June 2019 The Walt Disney Company UK and Ireland has today announced the principal company for the UK and Ireland tour of the landmark musical THE LION KING which will open in Bristol in September 2019 before moving on to Edinburgh in December 2019. Further cities will be announced in due course. American actor Dashaun Young will play the role of Simba which he first performed in 2007 on the North American tour, and subsequently performed in THE LION KING on Broadway, West End, Vegas and South Korea. He has also performed in Broadway productions of Motown The Musical and Beautiful The Carole King Musical.
