Welcome to Bryn Hafren Comprehensive School Going to Bryn Hafren A guide for primary school pupils Welcome to Bryn Hafren Comprehensive School What will it be like at Bryn Hafren? Starting in a new school is very exciting. But it can be a little bit worrying too. At your primary school, you and your friends are the eldest but in September you’ll be the youngest again! What is it going to be like? How will I get there? Who will my friends be? What are lessons going to be like with a different teacher for each subject? What do I wear? What is the food like? I expect you’d like to know the answers to these questions. Don’t worry – in this booklet we’ve tried to answer all these questions and lots more as well. So that when you come to Bryn Hafren you’ll be better prepared and not so scared. Open days and taster days You may have already had a look around Bryn Hafren at one of our open days with your parents or carers. Or perhaps you came up for the taster day with the rest of the Barry schools. If not, don’t worry, just read the information below and hopefully you will learn a little bit more about being a Bryn Hafren pupil. Welcome to Bryn Hafren Comprehensive School How do I get to school? Bus – Service Buses: S1 – Rhoose to Bryn Hafren – pupils living in Rhoose qualify for a bus pass S10 – Holton to Bryn Hafren via Palmerston, Coldbrook, Pencoedtre, Gibbonsdown. S14 – Broad Street to Bryn Hafren via The parade, Romilly, Pontypridd Road, Severn Avenue S3 – Barry Island to Bryn Hafren – pupils from Barry Island qualify for a bus pass. Walk – with your friends – it is fun to chat and the healthy alternative! Car – parents can bring you by car but must drop you in a safe place outside of the school grounds. NO parental cars are to come on site; this is for health and safety reasons. Make sure you know how to get home! If it is a day you don’t catch a bus / get a lift you may need to know the walking route – practise in the summer holidays! Welcome to Bryn Hafren Comprehensive School Your new school day Bryn Hafren opens every morning at 8am and if you want to buy breakfast you can pop along to the main hall, where the canteen will be opening. The buzzer will sound at 8.30 when you make your way to your form room for registration. 8.30 - 8.50: Registration and Tutorial or Assembly 8.50 - 9.50: Lesson 1 9.50 - 10.50: Lesson 2 10.50 - 11.10: Break time 11.10 - 12.10: Lesson 3 12.10 - 1.10: Lesson 4 1.10 - 1.50: Lunch 1.50 - 1.55: Registration 1.55 - 2.55: Lesson 5 What will I need? School equipment, PE kit, uniform You will need to have a sensible school bag to carry your books, equipment and PE kit. Rucksacks are a good idea. Equipment needed a pencil case to include: pens, pencils and a ruler. A basic calculator will be useful. Welcome to Bryn Hafren Comprehensive School What do I wear? School uniform is a navy blue sweatshirt with a logo, plain white polo shirt, black skirt or trousers (not jeggings or leggings), black shoes/daps – NO TRAINERS! PE Kit pale blue polo shirt, navy shorts / plain navy tracksuit trousers, trainers. Who is a form tutor? Your form tutor (or form teacher) is the person who doesn’t just take the register; he/she will help you through your first few weeks at Bryn Hafren, and for the rest of your time at comprehensive school. Your form tutor will probably get to know you better than any other member of staff in the school. Welcome to Bryn Hafren Comprehensive School What happens at tutorial? On a Monday and Wednesday you will have an assembly. During the other three sessions you will work with your form tutor to complete mentoring and tutorial work. Your form tutor will also monitor your planner at this time. What happens at assembly? During assembly you will sit in two rows (on the floor in one of our two halls) with your form tutor, assemblies will often be taken by your Head of Year (HOY) but you will see many different teachers taking assemblies. Will I take part in assemblies? Once each term your form class will take the assembly – start thinking of ideas now! What does FT, LRC and HOY mean? You’ll come across some funny names at Bryn Hafren – for example; FT = Form Tutor, LRC = Learning Resource Centre (library), HOY = Head of Year Quiz question. What do you think the following could mean? HT = Hot Toast/Hairy Toes/Head Teacher? KS3 = Kick Step 3/Key Stage 3/Kent School 3? PR= Price Reduction/Physical Running/Philosophy and Religion Welcome to Bryn Hafren Comprehensive School Food – our bodies need fuel to keep our brains working well and our bodies healthy. At BH we are very lucky to have a wide range of food to suit everyone. The canteen is open every morning for breakfast and at break and lunch for your snacks and dinner. We also have vending machines with drinks, sandwiches and healthy snacks. Fobs and cash – at BH we don’t carry cash around, we have fobs. Each week you charge your fob with cash and swipe the fob each time you wish to pay for food or snack – you can use it in the canteen or with one of the vending machines. A fob A typical lunch Tuna jacket and salad Vending Machine Welcome to Bryn Hafren Comprehensive School Lesson time – different subjects, different classrooms At primary school you probably mainly stay in one classroom. At comprehensive school you’ll have five lessons a day and they could be anywhere in the school. The Cabinet had also referred the report to the Scrutiny Committee for its consideration. In order to elaborate further on the document, a short presentation was also provided a copy of which was tabled at the meeting. The presentation was divided into three parts: Part 1 – The Regeneration Challenge Part 2 – The Council’s Track Record of Targeted Investment and Place Making in Barry Part 3 – Emerging Projects, Policies and Funding Programmes. The report also highlighted that the socio-economic and cultural environment of Barry had changed dramatically over the last 100 years or so, with Committee being informed that the coal boom, as the nineteenth century turned into the twentieth century, a steady economic decline followed the inter-war period. The decline prompted a plethora of government-led regeneration and redevelopment initiatives stretching back to the late 1980s which differed in scale, scope and vision In referring to nineteenth century expansion, the Head of Service advised that there had been a unique combination of the port industrial hub, expansion of the town and Barry Island becoming a resort. • Local Development Plan 2011- 2026 Local Development Plan Written Statement June 2017 Foreword

Local Development Plan 2011- 2026 Local Development Plan Written Statement June 2017 Foreword

Vale of Glamorgan Local Development Plan 2011- 2026 Local Development Plan Written Statement June 2017 Foreword I am pleased to introduce the Local Development Plan which provides a framework for sustainable development within the Vale of Glamorgan up to 2026. It is an extremely important Policy document that will guide the growth of the Vale of Glamorgan over a fifteen year period and identifies the infrastructure needs of our communities in terms of employment, facilities and services needed to support that growth. In setting this framework for the future development of the Vale of Glamorgan, we have been mindful of the need to regenerate and support our communities and in doing so the Plan seeks to achieve a balance between economic growth, social cohesion and environmental impact. Wherever possible the Plan’s emphasis is on re-using previously developed land and minimising the need to develop on green fields. Nowhere is this more apparent than in Barry where the emphasis is very much on the continued regeneration of the Waterfront. In addition, we have ensured that sufficient emphasis is being placed on providing for an appropriate level of growth in other communities throughout the Vale thereby ensuring their long term sustainability and vitality. In reading the document you will see that the evidence base that has informed the Plan and its policies is wide ranging and robust. I am particularly pleased that in progressing this Plan we have been able to comprehensively identify and allocate land for the services and facilities that will be needed to support additional residential and employment growth during the Plan period.
