Highlights from the first part of the year included: • Camp Manitou operating at full capacity during the summer of 2019, while preparing the commencement of construction of a new lodge. • Pre-COVID, the 2019-20 school year saw 2,000 teachers across Manitoba trained to utilize the online-based Project 11 Mental Health Curriculum, available to all teachers and schools at no cost. • The Winnipeg Jets Hockey Academy (WJHA) grew to include 900 student athletes, providing opportunity to learn both sport and life skills from coaches, mentors, and one another. • Dual effort fundraising occurred, operating both tradition fund generating events (described in this report), and initiating a capital campaign required to grow capacity at Camp Manitou. In the midst of this activity, the effects of the COVID global pandemic began in Manitoba quickly in mid-March 2020, and challenged all facets of the TNYF. The cancellation of NHL/AHL games stopped the 50/50 and other fundraising efforts. The capital campaign was similarly paused, as we all waited to learn the scope impacts of the pandemic. With the transition from regular to home-schooling, normal delivery of programing for each of WJHA, Project 11 and Camp Manitou similarly came to an abrupt halt.

Whether they had a team dinner complete with all the trimmings, split into smaller groups and scattered to enjoy steak or sushi, or simply barricaded themselves at the hotel and ordered room service, the Jets have much to be thankful for right now. The Central Division club is walking tall and looking good as one of the NHL’s premier clubs just past the quarter mark of the 2017-18 season. On Wednesday night, Winnipeg gutted out an impressive 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings — buoyed by a sensational 38-save effort from goalie Steve Mason — to improve to 13-5- 3 and remain second in the Central Division and Western Conference. After 21 games, the Jets find themselves No. 3 overall in the league behind only the powerhouse Tampa Bay Lightning (16-3-2) and the Central Division-rival St. Louis Blues (16-5- 1). The Jets have accumulated the same number of points (29) as both the Columbus Blue Jackets and Toronto Maple Leafs, but have games in hand on those clubs and get the third perch based on winning percentage. Indeed, Winnipeg still has 61 games left on the schedule, and much could change before the Stanley Cup playoffs begin the second week of April.

Finland is the logical destination for the Jets 2.0 organization's first foray overseas. The NHL has confirmed the Jets will soar across the pond for a pair of 2018-19 regular-season games in Finland against the Florida Panthers in early November. No firm dates or locations have been confirmed. Word surfaced earlier this month about the possibility of club's involvement in the league's ongoing Global Series, however, the rumour then was focused on a Jets' two-game set with the Carolina Hurricanes. But NHL commissioner Gary Bettman confirmed Saturday the Panthers will provide the opposition. The series would be a homecoming for Winnipeg's young superstar, Laine, as well as winger Joel Armia, and Florida's terrific youngster Aleksander Barkov. Laine, 19, who leads Winnipeg with 22 goals this season, hails from Tampere and is massive star here but an even bigger sensation back home. It's a terrific fit and the club jumped at the chance to be involved, chairman and co-owner Mark Chipman said from Tampa Bay, where he's participating in board of governors meetings while watching the fun and games at the NHL All-Star Weekend festivities. The World Junior Hockey Championships are considered one of the premiere international sporting events hosted in Canada. The Championships, which attract the worlds best junior hockey players from 10 countries, are estimated to generate gross economic impact of $43.5 Million for Manitoba including visitor expenditures of $10.7 Million. Manitoba last hosted the World Junior Championships in 1999 with a Brandon/Winnipeg partnership. That event was considered the benchmark for attendance and profit up to that period. Subsequent Championships in Halifax in 2003 and Vancouver in 2006 set escalating financial records. The 2009 Championships scheduled for Ottawa have committed a profit guarantee of $12.5 million based on attendance levels of 400,000. 2010 is considered by many as the last opportunity for the World Junior Hockey Championships to be held in a smaller market such as Manitoba. As a result of the 2010 Olympics, all NHL franchise cities have reduced seasons in order to allow their players to participate in the Games. Therefore, they are unable to commit their facilities for another 2 weeks to the hosting of the World Junior Hockey tournament.

    The Hybrid Monumental Symbols of Canada’s Warrior Nation Moment by Ian Alexander Mortimer A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts In Canadian Studies Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2014 Ian Alexander Mortimer Abstract Since its majority re-election in 2011, the Harper government has led a project of re-branding of Canadian identity. This study focuses on three militaristic symbols from this project as important cultural texts unto themselves. All three share a Hybrid Monumental form, articulating a narrative of Canada as a Warrior Nation. They communicate a monumental vision of Canada as being defined by war and sacrifice for the nation. However, they are all polysemic symbols, hybridized through the layering of established symbols of Canadian identity within their representation, tempering their monumental messaging. These Hybrid Monumental symbols are the product of a mutual commitment amongst the Harper Government and key stakeholders to market themselves as iconic brands, in an attempt to forge a connection with a shared target audience. These symbols serve as markers of the reality of the adoption of iconic branding and marketing as a primary political strategy.     HOCKEY HALL OF FAME ANNOUNCES NEW APPOINTMENTS TO THE SELECTION COMMITTEE Cassie Campbell-Pascall and Mark Chipman to become new members TORONTO (November 13, 2018) – Lanny McDonald, Chairman of the Board of the Hockey Hall of Fame, announced today the appointment of two new members to the Hockey Hall of Fame Selection Committee commencing with the 2019 nomination and election proceedings. The appointments were confirmed at the Directors’ meeting held earlier today. Cassie Campbell-Pascall and Mark Chipman will join the eighteen-member Selection Committee, replacing Eric Duhatschek who served his full term limit of 15 years, and Bill Torrey who served since 2007 until his passing on May 2, 2018. Presently a television commentator with Hockey Night in Canada, Campbell-Pascall’s hockey resume includes captain of the Canadian women’s gold medal winning teams at each of the 2002 and 2006 Winter Olympic Games.
