PREAMBLE

The Directorate of Geology & Mining M.P. (DGM) is engaged in the survey and exploration of mineral commodity and has contributed significantly towards state exchequer. The limestone being a major raw material for the manufacturing of cement is very important commodity and utmost essential in the fast growing infrastructure.

The DGM has prospected and proved no. of deposit in the limestone belt of Patharia, Hatta, Simariya, Devendra areas. In this course, limestone deposit of Nimarmunda area was prospected by DGM in the field season 1989-90 -91, About 3 million tonnes of average 44.5% CaO bearing limestone deposit was proved.

In the light of Mines and Minerals Act (Amendment) 2015, where it is proposed to grant the mining lease of four notified minerals through e-auction only, may fetch more revenue to the Government. Thus, at the instance of Sh. V. K. Austin, the Director, DGM, the reappraisal of the previous work by the Department was initiated. Moreover, Increase in demand, technological advancement and current mineral beneficiation techniques rendered many of previously unutilized and low grade deposits into an economic entity. Therefore, in this process the Nimarmunda limestone deposit was chosen for reappraisal. The current end use specification guidelines of minerals by the Indian Bureau of Mines stand as minimum 42% CaO for Portland cement grade. Keeping this view, the report on Investigation of limestone of Nimarmunda area (Sonar River) Tahsil: Hatta district: Damoh was relooked into. Thus, the contents, abstract, chapter IV “Behavior of Limestone & Analysis” chapter V “Resources of Limestone & conclusion and Recommendation” have been modified so that the report can be accommodated in the present norms. Thus the original report and contents are kept as such (written by the original author) and partly modified as per Mineral Auction Rule 2015. The resources are recalculated as per current norms of +42% CaO for Cement grade Limestone and leaving the area, which is already granted for M.L. The recalculation of resources has surfaced the presence of about 7.51 million tonnes (as per core) of cement grade limestone in the area.

ABSTRACT

At the instance of Shri V. K. Austin, The Director, Geology and Mining, M. P., the reassessment of limestone reserves of Nimarmunda area, Tahsil Hatta, district Damoh is being done. The prospecting work was carried out by the Department in the Field Season 1989-90-91 and accounted in the report entitled “Investigation of Limestone in Nimarmunda Area (Sonar River), Tah. Hatta, Distt. Damoh”. The parameters used for the reassessment of the mineral reserves and rewriting of the report are mainly the current end use specifications of minerals guidelines by Indian Bureau of Mines and the Mines and Mineral Act (Amendment) 2015. The area is occupied by Nagod limestone of Bhander group of Upper Vindhyans. It is grey to dark grey to bluish grey to pinkish grey in colour, hard, massive to bedded and intercalated and interbedded with argillaceous horizons. It trends is NE-SW with a miniscule dip towards south. It is in form of lensoid masses within prevalently argillaceous horizons. Infact, these limestones are known for their heterogeneous nature with frequent lateral as well as vertical variations. The prospecting of limestone deposits of Nimarmunda area was done by the Department and proved a reserve of about 3 million tonnes of average 44.5 % CaO bearing cement grade limestone. In the process, 95 BHs were drilled with a total meterage of 1582.91 M, in an area of about 2.1455 sq km. A sum of 1060 samples was analyzed in the Departmental Chemical Laboratory. The reappraisal was initiated by taking + 42% CaO minimum for Portland Cement Grade Limestone, as per the current specifications by the IBM, the lithologs and the chemical analysis results of samples of all the BHs, detailed in the report. These were studied and examined. Further, the drilled BHS falling within sanctioned ML area were also discarded. Thus, as result 46 BHs were identified having +42 % CaO. Then the prospected block was marked and transferred into village map, leaving aside the area already leased out as M. L. i. e. 15.546 Hect. For resources calculation, area of influence of all the BHs was considered and was rechecked with block method. As a result, the resources, of the order, of about 7.51 million tonnes are estimated; this may fall in 332 category of UNFC. The total area of the block is about 135.582 Hect. out of which about 8.311 Hect area is restricted as per MCR and MMDR. This, 135.5582 Hect area includes both the mineralized block, which is about 63 Hect and non- mineralized block for dumps and ancillary purposes.

CHAPTER- I

1.1 INTRODUCTION: It is well known fact that the industrial prospects of any country or state largely depends upon the exploitation and use of its mineral wealth. The mineral limestone, with its numerous industrial uses; may play an important role in the rapid industrialization of the state. Following the above view as a principle and to prove sufficient limestone deposits, for establishing new cement plant in the district. "Prospecting of Limestone along Sonar River area, district Damoh; was carried out by the Directorate of Geology and Mining M.P. in the field season 1989-90, and 1990-91. To achieve above object, prospecting work commenced from 22/12/89 and camp was established near village Ghutaria, which is about 50 km from district HQ and 15Km from tahsil HQ Hatta on Damoh Hatta-Panna state highway. The work was concluded in the field season 1990-91. Apart from the exploration (Drilling) work, a rapid reconnaissance survey, followed by detailed outcrop mapping were also conducted to establish the lithology of the area and to assess the extension of the known limestone deposits. Location: The area under investigation lies in between the longitudes 79040'40" to 79042'25" and latitudes 24012'5" to 24013'18" and falls in Survey of India toposheet No. 54 P/12 (1:63,360). CHAPTER-II

1. Previous Work:

The area has been geologically surveyed in the past by several eminent geologists.

Oldham T, geologist of Geological Survey of India, has conducted the systematic geological mapping of district Damoh & Sagar, in the year I956 and he first suggested the name Vindhyan to sandstone of Vindhyans ranges and divided the lithology in to Kaimur, Rewa and Bhander stages.

The work of Medlicott H.B. (1860) of Geological Survey of India, Mallet P.H. (1869) and Wilson W.L. (1868-76) have uniquely contributed in giving proper geological picture of the area.

The work conducted by Rajrajan K. (1978), in form of traverse survey and small scale mapping, is mostly informative and is beneficial as a guideline for detailed work.

The Directorate of Geology & Mining (M.P.) has also conducted detailed geological work from time to time; Newley S.K. prospected the cement grade limestone in Narsinghgarh region of district Damoh. Later on Mehta R.S. and Raikhere K.K. (1982- 83) of the same department have conducted the prospecting work in Kanaktala- Sankuiya area of district Damoh.

2. Geology of the area:

In general, the stratigraphic setup of the area is as follows:

Recent to sub recent Alluvium Sirbu shale Lower Bhander sandstone Bhander Group Lower Bhander (Nagod) Limestone Upper Vindhyan Ganurgarh shales ------Unconformity------Rewa Group Upper Rewa sandstone

The oldest formation of the area belongs to Upper Rewa sandstone and they are overlain unconformably by rocks of Bhander group of Upper Vindhyans, which includes

10

Ganurgarh shales, Lower Bhander Limestone, Lower Bhander sandstone and Sirbu shales. Upper Rewa Sandstone: It is fine to medium grained, compact, reddish brown to brown ferruginous and is exposed in north-west of the area in Karkuli reserve forest. The Rewa's are quartzitic in nature and are highly jointed, showing cross and graded bedding at places. Ganurgarh Shales: The exposures of Ganurgarh shales are very rare and are found in some of the nala cuttings and stream section of the investigated area. They are best exposed in and around Hatta township and villages Puraina, Burena, Burma etc. They are purple to brick red in colour and are very friable in nature. At places, they are interbedded with fine to medium grained friable, reddish brown sandstone. They tend to grade into overlying Bhander limestone. Hence upper beds of the formation are calcareous in nature. General trend of the formation is NNE-SSW to almost E-W, having dip due NE to south respectively. The amount of dip varying from 40 to 120. Lower Bhander Limestone: The Ganurgarh shales are overlain by lower Bhander Limestone. The limestone band extends in NE - SW direction from south west of Hatta township to east of Puraina and Padri-Bhagunt village. They crop out in form of lenses around village Hatta, south of Deogaon, south of Panji, north of Binti, around village Kanaktala, south and north east of Sankuiya, north east and south of Nimarmunda, south of Puraina. They are also exposed from east of Dhuma to east of Deori along Sonar river. Scattered outcrops, of limestone having small dimension, have also been observed in between Puraina and Sakor village and east of village Padri Bhagunt. Limestone deposit of Hatta and Puraina seems to be of poor quality. Limestones are fine grained, light to dark grey in colour. It becomes pinkish and brownish at contact with underlying shale formation strike of these formation range from NNE-SSW to NE-SW having dip from almost flat to 6° due south. They are well bedded, compact and commonly associated with shale in form of intercalation. The Phenomenon of elephant skin weathering is very prominent in the investigated area. They are also traversed by thin veins of white to milky calcite and quartz. Stromatolitic limestone has also been observed in some places. Common joint pattern which have been observed in the area also as follows:

11

i. N -S ii. NE – SW iii. NW - SE iv. E – W. Lower Bhander Sandstone: Lower Bhander limestone is succeeded by lower Bhander sandstone; although the contact of these formations is not seen in the area. The outcrops of this formation are very restricted and are commonly noticed around limestone deposits of Hatta, Kanaktala and Nimarmunda. These sandstones are medium to fine grained, compact, thinly bedded, yellowish brown to reddish brown in colour Thin beds of shale in between this rock have been observed in some places. They exhibit shallow water sedimentary feature like ripple marks, sun cracks and rain drops. The strike and dip direction of this formation is almost similar to the older formation. Sirbu Shale: This rock unit is not very distinct, few exposures of the rock occur around village Hardua and Sakor. These shales are grey and buff to khaki green in colour, thinly bedded and splintery. They are interbedded with thin beds of brown to buff colour friable sandstone. The general strike of the Sirbu shale is NE-SW with dip due SE and amount of dip 60 to 120. Raindrops and mud cracks are very common feature observed on the surface of these shales.

CHAPTER - III

Details of Work Done (of Original Prospecting done in 1989-91):

The investigation of limestone in Nimarmunda and Sakor block has been taken up in field season 1989-90 and 1990-91 and carried out the geological work like topographical survey, detailed mapping, and exploration of limestone by drilling and sampling.

1. Topographical Survey:

The topographical survey has been carried out with the help of theodolite and dumpy level. Total 254 number of grid points has been established at 100 M grid interval. Reduced levels of each point have been established and later on contour plan on 1 M interval has been prepared. The grid interval has also been reduced to 50 M in the area where the exposures of limestone were seen, so that it may be mapped easily and accurately.

2. Detailed Mapping:

Detailed geological mapping has been carried out on the scale 1:4000 (Plate No. III) to assess the extension of the limestone. An area of about 0.952 sq km was carried out in Nimarmunda block in field season 1989-90 and about 1.952 sq km area was covered in Sakor block, in field season 1990-91. Total about, 2.145 sq km area was covered by detailed mapping.

The mapping work has been carried out by gridding the area into 100 M grid interval and then the limestone outcrops have been marked along with other details by offset method.

In prospected area, the limestone outcrops extend in almost NE –SW direction and attains the maximum width in the middle of the area.

3. Drilling Work:

The drilling work has been carried out, in prospected area, with the help of two number of calyx type drill machines. Total 95 numbers of boreholes were drilled in two field seasons with the total meterage of 1582.91 mts. covering an area of 2.148 sq km. The details of the work done are tabulated below:

13

S. No. Field Season No. of B.H. Meterage Area cover by drilled achieved 1. 1989-90 30 Nos. 504.33 Mts. 0.9525 Sq Km 2. 1990-91 65 Nos. 1078.38 Mts. 1.193 Sq Km

The drilling of boreholes was mostly carried out at 200 M interval but some boreholes were also drilled at 100 M interval, to assess the thickness of limestone and its quality or to see the lateral extension of the limestone beds.

The depth of the bore holes ranges from 7.5 M to 32.80 M. However, few deep bore holes were also drilled to see the vertical variation in different lithounits.

Logging and Sampling:

Cores, which had been received from drilling operations, were splited longitudinally into two equal halves, with the help of core splitter and then logged into logging register. One half of the spllited core has been preserved for further reference and other core has been powdered to about 100 mesh size. These powdered samples have been numbered with relationship to the borehole number and then were sent for chemical analysis. Total 1060 number of samples were prepared and sent to laboratory.

The Present Work to reframe the report (as per the Mineral Auction Rules 2015):

The reappraisal of the prospecting report of the area was done in the light of Mines and Minerals Act (Amendment) 2015 and Mineral Auction Rules 2015, where it is proposed to grant the mining lease of four notified minerals through e-auction only, which may fetch more revenue to the Government. The current specifications of Indian Bureau of Mines for the Portland cement grade limestone is +42 % CaO. Keeping this criterion, the logs of all the boreholes were carefully studied and examined to carve out the areas of +42 % CaO bearing limestone. In this way, 46 boreholes were found showing limestone (≥42 % CaO and in band +38% CaO) and form a block of cement grade limestone. An area of about 0.63 sq km, occupied by cement grade limestone block, has thus been chalked out on the basis of examination of borehole logs and chemical analysis results of samples. The details were transferred into khasra map (on 1:4000 scale) and a block was thus chalked out. Then, the DGPS / ETS survey of the block was done. The area of existing mining lease as well as the restricted areas as per MCR and MMDR was left out. Thus, on this basis, the Block was sub divided into five

14 sub blocks. The areas were also allocated for dumping and other ancillary activities. The cadastral details of the area were also procured to make it a complete document.

15

CHAPTER IV

Behaviour of Limestone and Analysis:

The behaviour of limestone has already been described in Chapter II “Geology of the Area”, that the limestone deposits are scattered in almost NE -SW direction, in form of small outcrops. They are overlain by Lower Bhander Sandstone and overlie Ganurgarh shales. These limestone beds are intercalated and interbedded with grey to pink shales and these shales are mainly responsible for deteoration of quality of limestone, especially in the boreholes located in the northern part of the area.

In Nimarmunda area, the outcrops of the limestone extends in almost NE – SW direction, which attains maximum width of about 460 M in the middle of the area, but its quality deteorates both vertically as well as longitudinally due to intercalations and interbanding with shale.

The core logging along with their analysis is appended in Table II. The analytical data clearly shows that the borehole located in the southern side (Nimarmunda block) of the area constitute cement grade limestone with average thickness of about 4 M. The maximum thickness is about 18 M was observed in borehole no. N – 76.

The chemical analysis of all the samples was done in the Departmental Laboratory, where the chemists are well experienced and well versed of taking all the quality checks. There is a practice of random and regular re-checking of samples in the Departmental Laboratory. The chemical analysis results of all the borehole core samples were re– examined, keeping in view, the current norms of + 42 % CaO for cement grade limestone. Based on this, 46 no. of boreholes were seen having a CaO % of +42(in band +38% CaO). The analytical behavior of CaO, MgO and SiO2 are as given below;

CaO: 42.54 %

Average MgO: 01.30%

SiO2: 14.02% Further, weighted average of CaO % is found as 43.659. It can be concluded that the area forms a rather compact block (in NE –SW direction), however, as per the mineral auction, it is further divided into five sub-blocks taking the restricted areas as barrier.

16

The heterogeneity of Bhander limestone is reaffirmed. The rise in SiO2 is inversely proportional to CaO%.

17

CHAPTER V

Resources of Limestone:

The resources of cement grade limestone have been calculated in the prospected area, by taking average CaO 42%. The boreholes, showing ratio of 1:5 between overburden and limestone, were considered for resources calculation.

In the prospected area, as already discussed in previous chapter, total 95 no. of boreholes were drilled of which only 46 bore holes have been considered, for resources calculation, taking the aforesaid parameters. In the report, the area, of sanctioned M.L., was excluded and not considered for estimation. Further, the resources were estimated, leaving aside the restricted areas, as per the provisions of MCR and MMDR. The area was resurveyed by DGPS /ETS and thus present resources are confined to five sub blocks.

The limestone resources were re-assessed based on the borehole samples yielding +42 % CaO (in band +38 % CaO). The resources are calculated by taking the area of influence of each of these 46 boreholes firstly and then these were reaffirmed by block method. The volume of the cement grade limestone has been calculated by multiplying the area into thickness of limestone, which in turn again multiplied by specific gravity (2.5) of limestone to get the resources. The Specific Gravity i.e. 2.5 is assumed, as per the original prospecting report of the area and also considered for resources calculation in the nearby areas of same formation i.e. limestone of Bhander Group. The area of influence of each borehole was taken up to half of the distance between next borehole point either side, except for the bordering boreholes, where only 1/4 of the area of influence was considered in outer side. The whole area was resurveyed by DGPS / ETS. The block is comprised of about 135.582 Hect area of which 8.311 Hect area is restricted as per MCR and MMDR. The mineralized block had to be sub-divided into five sub blocks (five each for mineralized and non- mineralized for dumping and ancillary purposes). Thus, in this way, a resources of about 9.38 million tonnes (as per run) / 7.51 million tonnes (as per core) are estimated in the block, leaving aside the area already granted for ML i.e. 15.546 Hect. and the restricted area, as per MCR and MMDR i. e. 8.311 Hect. Table II shows the details of R. L., total depth, overburden, thickness of limestone borehole wise reserves of the block, as per weighted CaO % (as per current norms of IBM, taking +42% for cement grade limestone). The summary of mineral resources of the block is given as below:

18

5 Sub Block-5 1534557.5 3.68 79.98 42.906

Total:- 7510525.625 Tonnes or say 7.51 million tonnes

The Area of Nimarmunda Limestone Block:

The block lies within the revenue premises of Ghurkheda, Padri Bhagunt and Puraina Kanti villages of Hatta tahsil of Damoh district (M P). The total area of the block is about 135.582 Hect. out of which about 8.311 Hect. area is restricted due to provisions of MCR and MMDR. Thus, an area of about 127.271 Hect is available for e- auction. This includes about 63.006 Hect of mineralized area and rest is kept for dumping and ancillary purposes.

Conclusion and Recommendation:

The analytical data of boreholes reveals that the thickness varies from 0.45 to 18.00 mts. The thickness of limestone as well as its quality varies due to the presence of argillaceous and siliceous bands and intercalation of shales. The nature of Bhander limestone is heterogeneous due to lateral and vertical variations with respect to chemical variations and lithology.

A minimum percentage of +42% CaO has been considered for calculation of cement grade limestone. The resources of cement grade limestone have been calculated to the order of 7.51 million tonnes.

The Hatta tahsil of Damoh district is totally devoid of any industries other than Bidi making. This cement grade limestone reserve of Nimarmunda area may feed to nearby existing units of Cement Manufacturing.

The borehole logs were analyzed and the limestone band having of +42% CaO was considered for estimation of resources. The boreholes which correspond to ≤ 40% CaO were also taken into account to form a compact block. The area of influence of each borehole was multiplied by thickness of limestone (+42 % CaO) band to arrive at the volume. This volume is multiplied by specific gravity of 2.5 to get the resources. (f) Description of how the The formation is mostly horizontally bedded type thus its geological interpretation was continuity is sufficiently proven between each borehole used to control the resource points.
