While many things may have changed, that statement is holding true as the nation continues to battle the COVID-19 outbreak and get its citizens back to work. Wells County’s unemployment rate in August was 4.7 percent, accord- ing to preliminary figures released Monday by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. The rate a month earlier was 5.9 percent. Indiana’s statewide unemployment rate, released last week by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, is 6.4 percent. The national rate, accord- ing to the same study, is 8.4 percent. Chad Kline, economic development director for Wells County, had been apprehensive when considering how the county would fare as hir- ing resumed. He had been told that some companies may have built up inventories while other locations were shut down much tighter than Indi- ana was. Had that been the case, that could have led to workforce reduc- tions here. With a 4.7 percent unemployment rate, Wells County is near the 4 percent unemployment rate — a mark some economists consider full functional employment. “We’re definitely faring very well,” Kline said Monday afternoon. “We have had a very, very small response to any permanent layoffs in manufacturing.” The drop in Wells County’s unemployment rate has happened, he said, because companies have been hiring. Breathing easy “Most everyone has brought everybody back, and some are looking to hire more people,” Kline said. MTV’s The Real World, a reality TV show that first aired in 1992, captures the lives of seven young people between the ages of 18-24 that are selected to live in a house together for several months. The show’s dramatic the opening title sequence, “what happens when people stop being polite and start getting real?” raises fundamental questions about the relationship of reality TV and the politics of representation, as well as about the relationship between the subjects represented in reality TV and its viewers and consumers. Ohman combines a critical narrative analysis with critical theories of representation and identity politics. In particular, she draws on queer theory and the work of cultural studies scholar Stuart Hall to examine The Real World show, highlighting how representation in the media has become a vital tool for viewers to help validate their subjectivity and subject- positions within the LGBTQ community.

  • Hip-Hop's Betrayal of Black Women
Hip-Hop's Betrayal of Black Women Written by Jennifer McLune ID2562 Wednesday, 26 April 2006 02:01 - Indeed, like rock & roll, hip-hop sometimes makes you think we men don''t like women much at all, except to objectify them as trophy pieces or, as contemporary vernacular mandates, as baby mommas, chickenheads, or bitches. But just as it was unfair to demonize men of color in the 60s solely as wild-eyed radicals when what they wanted, amidst their fury, was a little freedom and a little power, today it is wrong to categorically dismiss hip-hop without taking into serious consideration the socioeconomic conditions (and the many record labels that eagerly exploit and benefit from the ignorance of many of these young artists) that have led to the current state of affairs. Or, to paraphrase the late Tupac Shakur, we were given this world, we did not make it. – Kevin Powell, Notes of a HipHop Head. [emphasis added] To hip-hop's apologists: You were given this world and you glorify it. You were given this world and you protect it. You were given this world and you benefit from it. You were given this world and even in your wildest dreams you refuse to imagine anything else but this world. And anyone who attacks your misogynistic fantasy and offers an alternative vision is a hater, or worse, an enemy who just doesn''t get it. What is there to get? There is nothing deep or new about misogyny, materialism, violence and homophobia. The hardest part isn''t recognizing it, but ending it.

Failed Active Listening in The Real World: A Study of Dominance in Casual Conversation Tamara Jones Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) School of Education, University of Sheffield September, 2010 ii Abstract Native-English speakers generally appreciate a certain amount of supportive feedback from their listeners. However, occasionally, a positive listener response actually causes the speaker to become threatened and revert to floor-saving measures. Speakers whose first language is not English may be at a disadvantage when involved in interactions with native-English speakers because they may not be equipped with the tools to exercise conversational power, if they wish to do so. Consequently, with the goal of creating educational materials that can be easily used in English Language Teaching (ELT), this thesis examines instances of listener support which are not appreciated by the speaker. For my corpus, I pulled 69 conversations from a popular American reality TV show, The Real World. These conversations were selected because of the presence of floor-saving strategies in the wake of seemingly benign listener commentary.
