SAINT BONAVENTURE CHURCH The Most Holy Trinity | May 30, 2021 As Christian stewards, our mission is to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all people through word, sacrament, service and community life.

In the Name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy spirit. Page two The Most Holy Trinity

Pastor's corner Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The Gospel account today comes at the conclusion of the Gospel according to St. Matthew:

The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them. When they saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted. Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age” (Matthew 28:16-20).

As Jesus was about to ascend to the right hand of the Father, he gave his most important pronouncement. Jesus Christ, who has all power in heaven and on earth, sent his disciples to baptize in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. The disciples must teach the newly baptized to observe all that he had commanded. He assured them that he would always be with them until the end of the age.

Jesus, the Son of God, wanted us to know that God is One and that God is Trinity. Theologians have pondered this mystery since Jesus first made this pronouncement. Every Catholic family should have a copy of the Bible and read it daily. I would also request that you have a copy of the Catechism of the which was promulgated by Pope Saint John Paul II. You can learn more about our belief in the Holy Trinity in numbers 232 through 260. There is not room in this letter to delve into the entirety of this great mystery. Let me concentrate on numbers 242 through 244:

The Church confessed at the first ecumenical council at Nicaea (325) that the Son is “consubstantial” with the Father, that is, one only God with him. The second ecumenical council, held at Constantinople in 381, kept this expression in its formulation of the Nicene Creed and confessed “the only-begotten Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, light from light, true God from true God, begotten not made, consubstantial with the Father.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, number 242) Before his Passover, Jesus announced the sending of “another Paraclete” (Advocate), the Holy Spirit. At work since creation, having previously “spoken through the prophets,” the Spirit will now be with and in the disciples, to teach them and guide them “into all the truth.” The Holy Spirit is thus revealed as another divine person with Jesus and the Father. (CCC, number 243) The sending of the person of the Spirit after Jesus’ glorification reveals in its fullness the mystery of the Holy Trinity. (CCC, number 244)

It is therefore appropriate that the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity is celebrated on the Sunday after Pentecost. We profess every Sunday:

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God. ... I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. ... (excerpts from the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed)

Next time you make the Sign of the Cross, realize you are praying to our One God in Three Persons. You are embracing God as He embraces you: “In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.” May 30, 2021 Page three
