Hickmon May 2017 Copyright © 2016 Fredrick L. Hickmon All rights reserved Abstract The members of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians are the invisible heroes of Mississippi. Because of the limited attention placed on the Tribe in Mississippi high school social studies curriculum, and no course of study in any post-secondary institutions in the State, citizens who do not live in close proximity are oblivious to the Choctaws’ existence. Absent, is any thought on Mississippi Choctaws deep, rich, background, as the original defenders of the State, or their feelings and contributions toward education. As such this work explored the history of the Mississippi Choctaw with emphasis on education using data collected from Tribal member’s stories. The following study is a Native American Education History on the Creation of Choctaw Central High School, and its transition from a Bureau of Indian Affairs School to a school under local Tribal control. The lack of history written on the Mississippi Choctaw presents an opportunity to conduct quality research. Perceptions and ideas about these phenomena given by participants provide insight on the plight of the Mississippi Choctaws during their historical journey. Harbour: From Poverty to Prosperity: The Path of Education among the Mississippi Choctaw (Under the direction of Malinda Maynor Lowery) The Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians knew early in their post-recognition existence that education was the key to future success for the tribe. From 1945 to 1963, the MBCI methodically built the framework for an autonomous school district that would provide students with a comprehensive curriculum that addressed tribal needs. The crowning achievement of this project was a high school that kept tribal members in the community for their secondary education. This analysis traces the creation of Choctaw Central High School from conception to completion and highlights the contributions of tribal leaders in making the project a major tribal success. Tribal Chairmen like Emmet York and Philip Martin helped develop a progressive school curriculum and the capital necessary to fund the school as an independent entity. Relatively speaking, the Delta is just not that old. Settlements started rising up in early 1800s and by the 1820s towns were being incorporated. With the rise of King Cotton some even became fairly large cities. Little remains, however, of the physical history of the Delta prior to the Civil War. Take your time and get know the Delta’s incredible history. Our history includes interpretation of the Native American experience, the rise of agriculture, the Civil War, Civil Rights and of the incredible music known as the Delta Blues. • Hernando DeSoto, the first European to travel the mighty Mississippi River arrived in what is now DeSoto County in 1542. The 41-acre Hernando DeSoto River Park is located just north of Lake Comorant on the banks of the Mississippi River. After getting up close and personal with Old Man River stop by the DeSoto County Courthouse in Hernando to view murals depicting DeSoto’s arrival to the area. Erected shortly after the end of the Civil War, the DeSoto County Confederate Monument is one of Mississippi’s oldest. The monument is located in the Hernando Memorial Cemetery. • In operation since 1944, the Riverside Hotel in Clarksdale was formerly the G.T. Thomas Afro-American Hospital. Chief Martin is 13 currently serving his sixth consecutive four-year term. His date 14 of birth is March 13, 1926; and 15 WHEREAS, Chief Martin serves the Mississippi Band of Choctaw 16 Indians on numerous Boards of Directors. During his tenure as 17 Tribal Chief, Mr. Martin has established Tribally-owned and 18 operated businesses and service operations, most of which are 19 located on the Choctaw Indian Reservation, and some of which are 20 located in Mexico and in major cities across North America. The 21 result has been the creation of a very strong and widely 22 diversified local economy, with the Tribe now ranking among 23 Mississippi's five largest employers; and 24 WHEREAS, on July 1, 1994, the Mississippi Band of Choctaw 25 Indians launched its first gaming operation, the Silver Star Hotel 26 and Casino, organized under the authority of the Indian Gaming 27 Regulatory Act.
