The feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary celebrates the body and soul of Mary being taken up to heaven at the end of her life. It is a very old feast of the Church, which was widely celebrated by the sixth century, and there are traditions of celebrating this feast as early as the fourth century. It began in the East as the Feast of the Dormition, which means “the falling asleep.” A document named “The Falling Asleep of the Holy Mother of God” was the first printed reference to Mary’s death, and is attributed to the apostle John. It described the death of Mary, the laying in the tomb, and her assumption into heaven. According to tradition, Mary passed from this life in or possibly Ephesus. Although it is not certain where she died, and there were no relics of the Blessed Mother to be venerated, there was a tomb in Jerusalem that became a site of Assumption by Juan Martín Cabezalero pilgrimage.
