York winter not long after the September 11 attacks.

The book's character, Liat, a dutiful young Israeli translator, falls for Hilmi, a Palestinian painter. Liat must decide how far to take a love she knows her family and friends will disapprove of, seeing her as a traitor to her upbringing, her Jewishness. Their path is very complicated, even though Liat states, He's not the Palestinian people. He is one person."

Ms. Rabinyan, a well-known writer since her 20s, became a national cause. In 2015 the Israeli Education Ministry announced it would pull the book, whose tentative English title at the time was "Borderline." The move came amid a larger debate about the right-wing government's crackdown on opponents, from right groups to disillusioned soldiers.

Ms. Rabinyon, whose book under the title "All the Rivers, was published in the US by Random House, said she wanted Americans to read the book for what she said it is -- a story of a specific love and its boundaries -- and not because of the free- speech controversy here or the backdrop of a conflict that will not heal, now 50 years since Israel took control of the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem.

Readers will ask themselves for what, or for whom, are their values and cultural identities worth sacrificing?

Temple Israel 9 Temple Israel Foundation Jewish Arbor Day: Tu B’Shevat and The New Temple Israel Cemetery

Tu B’Shevat – the New Year of the Trees – dates back to Talmudic times and is thought to be a harbinger of spring.

What does Tu B’Shevat have to do with The New Temple Israel Cemetery? Nothing exactly…except that 44 new trees were planted by the Temple Israel Foundation on the grounds of The New Temple Israel Cemetery (at Alum Creek & Performance Pkwy) in 2014-15. Some of those trees were pre-selected by members who purchased a tree and who are recognized in stone signage embedded at the base of the tree.

Seven trees did not fare well and were recently removed and replaced with like trees.

So, as we think about Tu B’Shevat, which occurred in late January 2019, think about whether you may wish to purchase a tree in this area to honor your family or to memorialize a family member. A variety of hardy trees are available to choose from: Red Sunset Maple October Glory, Red Oak, Bradford Pear, Evergreen Spruce, Sargent Crabapple & Prairie Crabapple. The cost of this tree donation is $500, including the signage.

If you have an interest in a tree purchase/donation, feel free to contact Elaine Tenenbaum, Executive Director of the Foundation, at [email protected], or 614.657.8501.
