3 PET HOROSCOPES

Aries March 21 to April 19

They are like a baby very demanding - want what they want right now - food or attention. Will bring you their bowl or bark at the door or jump in your lap to get your attention. Lots of energy. Completely absorbed in their own desires. Believes in you with all their heart no matter what you do, are completely trusting. They seem to look you straight in the eye and ask, "Do you love me? Are you my friend?". They seem vulnerable and helpless, looking at you with their sweet eyes. Will yelp and bark if a toy is taken away - raising a real fuss until it is returned. They walk proud and with an air of self-confidence. If they hang their heads and tails it is because they have been mis- treated, but a little tender loving care and they bounce back. Very protective of their family and home. They can be brave and face a big- ger dog - but the vets needle will make them cower. Not a fussy eater - when hungry will let you know. Strong constitution, but watch for skin rashes. Sometimes a little difficult to train because they have a short attention span. Sometimes your patience will wear thin, but their seeming innocence will always win your heart. Dislike being put on a leash. Naturally hasty and impulsive, guide them gently - force will not work. Lots of praise and cajoling. They have a fierce and unquestioning loyalty.

Taurus April 20 to May 20

Stubborn is their trademark. Difficult to get them to do what they don't want to do. Throw water or light a fire they won't budge. They will look at you with their steady, tranquil, questioning eyes, as if saying "you want me to do what?" They are very passive, must be tempted to play. Very much the home body, hates to travel. Change upsets them, they are extremely set in their ways and will resist change at every turn. Usually contented and placid - but does have a temper - their eyes will flash and tails lash - but this will pass quickly. They want comfortable and familiar surroundings. Extremely healthy - if you watch their diet. They love food and will eat anything. Make sure they get exercise as they are happy just relaxing on their favorite pillow, seem to need a lot of rest. Needs own bed to feel secure. Loyalty and devotion to family surpass all understanding, even when they are mistreated. They move with a slow deliberate pace. They love to be bathed, makes them feel pampered. If a family member is sick they will stay by their side. Normally calm - not easily disturbed. Can be easily trained if given many gentle and praising words. Can resist discipline and orders forever if yelled at - but a gentle voice and affec- tion will work every time. If scolded they will become defiant until you apologize. They are not overly demonstrative - but will give undying loyalty. Will sulk if they do not get enough attention.

Gemini May 21 to June 21

Lots of energy - they seem to snap, crackle and pop around the house. Eyes twinkle and dart here and there, always alert. Very inquisi- tive, must see and know everything. Bring a package into the house and they must inspect it thoroughly. Their entire body seems to be saying "Let me see! Let me see!" Everything that moves or looks different catches their eyes and off they go to investigate. They bounce from one thing to the other seeking adventure. Easily sidetracked when trying to train. They are very persuasive and can charm you into doing things their way. It will take a lot of patience during training, but it is worthwhile as they are so much fun with their lively ways. They are unpredictable at times. Be prepared to chase a lot when they are puppies and go off to explore. They love people - the more in the household the happier they are. Having lots of company will delight them, they will greet everyone and be your assistant host or hostess. Not big eaters - will eat a little food and then off to explore, eating seems to be a waste of their valuable time. Will sleep in different places - likes change. Try to make sure they get plenty of rest - they have a tendency to keep moving and playing. They cannot stand long peri- ods of close confinement. Average health, biggest problem is accidents because of their active natures. They love all kinds of toys, will play with anything. This is a very active pet.

Cancer June 22 to July 23

They are warm and sensitive to their owners, almost like a parent in their caring natures. Can charm you into doing what they want with coaxing looks. They love attention and praise, but are very shy and timid. A harsh tone or rough glance and they are easily wounded. When their feel- ings are hurt they will disappear and hide. It will take a lot of coaxing and petting to get them to join the family again. They love to play "catch me". Watch how they move in quick and clever ways, never impulsively. They will move sideways and backwards, then pounce. Some times they will be the catchee and sometimes the catcher. They are average eaters - not fussy - but will occasionally hide a morsel of food for a late night snack. Love the water, but the waves will scare them. Will play with a toy by themselves for hours. Do not try to take a favorite toy away as they will hang on to it for dear life. Pre- fer being inside. Are docile and quiet. Storms frighten them - they'll hide under the bed till its over. During training they will sometimes think over things and be a little stubborn, a sharp tap on the rump will get their attention. When they get their lessons right, lots of praise and pats will make their tails wag in glee. Their health must be watched as they seem to have delicate systems. Very shy and timid with strangers, so if you're having a party or lots of company let them stay in a quiet room away from the crowd, as they can get crabby. They will snap when irritated - so do not tease.

Aust Ch Deutschpin Night Shadow 26/12/1989 to 18/2/1997

Tara was purchased from Mike Towell’s first litter by Puck V Cronsbach (Imp. Germany) and Marie V Cronsbach (Imp. Germany). She was a lovely puppy with distinctive and perfect black and tan markings, very lively, slightly agro but wary of strangers.

Tara started her show career 30/6/1990 and received her title Australian Champion on 4/4/1991. Like all rare breeds the road to champion is a long one.

The Woodwell’s began the long process of promoting the breed in Australia, showing every week- end and at any show, any where possible.

Some of her achievements were—Best of Breed:

Brisbane Royal National Show (Ekka) 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993 and 1994.

Royal Melbourne Show. 1991 and 1992.

Toowoomba Royal Show. 1991.

Sydney Spring Fair. 1991.

She also had multiple in show awards.

Realising the gene pool in Australia was extremely limited, the Woodwell’s decided to import. They brought in from Frank and Gloria Cuthbert’s Kinrha Kennels a dog ‘Kinrha Hickory Jem’. The mat- ings under the Wallingburg prefix produced 4 litters. Some of these were; Wallingburg Britches (Qld), Wallingburg Bravado Boy (Qld), Wallingburg Bourbon Boy (WA), Wallingburg Blade Runner (Qld), Wallingburg Anastasia (Qld) relocated to (SA), Wallingburg Arabella (North Qld), Wallingburg Alexander (Qld), Wallingburg Alethea (Qld) and Wallingburg Anna Marie (SA) relocated to (Qld).

Of all of these, one stood out in the show ring. He was Aust Ch Wallingburg Blade Runner. With his championship on late 1994 he also had in show awards in Queensland, South Australia and New South Wales.

Her last litter produced only one puppy. Wallingburg Dominique who went to Victoria and became (to our knowledge) the first German Pinscher to reside in Victoria.

Tara had a good life and one of the best tributes ever made to her was from an International Euro- pean Judge. After he had finished judging the breed he asked if he could put the bitch on the table, when he then commented that this German Pinscher bitch with it’s beautiful head, it’s conformation and true perfect colouring could hold its own with any of the best in his country.

Tara passed away in her sleep in the evening of 18th February 1997 and was sadly missed by all who knew her in the ring, and at home.

Keith & Joy Woodwell, Wallingburg German . Brisbane, Qld.

5 OUT AND ABOUT

CAT PROTECTS HER PUPPY PALS I ended cutting it up in to a few pieces with the shovel - we have Kookaburras that live here and they ate it up very quickly when I through it out the back :-)

I though I might elaborate on the "snake" incident with At the time I was only thinking about he dogs but I was Cat. aware that Cat was safe and knew what she was doing, hence not putting her away, if I had I may have lost the snake......

I really believe that she was worried about the pups and she knew that she needed me too come out to help, she loves the puppies and spends her afternoons playing with them.

It really is amazing when you watch a dog display it's breed characteristics like that. This is one clever little dog.

COOPER TURNS ONE!

She was brilliant - I was inside and heard her barking what sounded like a warning bark, very very different A beautiful morning on Good Friday 2007 we cele- to her usual " I am so happy that I am just going to brated Coopers first birthday. The scene was set at bark for the sake of it" or her "who are you and what Burke Drive Dog Beach in Western Australia where we are you doing, go away from my house" bark or her shared Champagne & Orange, Coffee and homemade very annoying "MUM'S HOME" screech .I went out to biscuits. find her standing stock still staring at a spot under my Macadamia tree, there is a low rock wall and the leaves from the tree where along the wall, she was about 2 foot away from the leaves, she started to circle to the left as I found my shoes.

I knew it was either a snake or a lizard ( we have some real big water dragons and blue tongues in my gar- den), as I walked over she then circled to the right keeping her distance, she continued to wheel left and right without getting closer as I found the nearest gar- den implement that I could find, in this case a big mother steel rake.

I call the other dogs and put them in the puppy yard, cat would not come, she started to bark hysterically and run to the left towards the puppy yard where my 7 babies were.

I got over to her, to find a 2 1/2 foot brown snake head- My son Ryan was very busy all ing towards the puppy yard, cat let me go in front and week researching homemade dog biscuits that he she went to the right of me and circled again, I had a made and put into doggy party bags for all to take small fight with the snake ( it only tried to bite me 2 home. When we had our first swimming lesson we managed to swim across the river and back and really believed we could catch a duck or water bird. All was going well and we had nearly come up along side one when they pulled out the big guns called wings and left us paddling in their wake. How do we get these things called wings – we will be consulting the pinscherclopedia.

We have a very happy life down here even though we are so far away from most of our other pinscher mates. But there is always something to do, like go see mums parents where we get super spoilt, we eat everything that is dished up to us and mum is very proud that we don’t waste anything. As you can see my vet Frank took good care of me. He gave me green bandages (cause I'm Irish) and he put red ribbon around it for Xmas. Mum said I was a very good boy and very brave. I must have been be- cause as you can see Santa came....

Mum has been giving us a rest from the shows over the summer months and we have learnt how to swim instead. She loves being able to sit and watch while we do our exercise in the water. Usually she takes us out every morning and we follow her on the bike. She thinks sitting by the river bank is a much more civilised way for her to exercise us. When we see rabbits we are off like rockets. We fly through the air and we love it when we catch one.

We also saw another doggy creature that was red like us. We followed it for a while and it was quite tame. When we got home to ‘google’ it and find out what it was, we discovered it was a fox.

7 Anyway, Mum brought me back to see the doc in This little gorgeous bundle of energy had a mind of his February because my leg was sore. Turns out my own and we were left to rethink all our ideas on dealing growth plates had sealed and my leg had stopped with puppies. The only one dealing successfully with growing. I was referred to Jason Beck at Qld Kaiser was our Airedale , Offenbark. He would Veterinary Specialists & he has taken really good care patiently lay there with this little red rocket jumping on of me. I've had surgery to fix my leg and am nearly and over him, pulling his tail and tugging at his ears. Better. The metal frame comes off next week!! But when Offenbark had had enough one short sharp growl would put Kaiser in his place. We had problems at feeding time, jumping up and nipping. All these problems I must stress are not confined to the GP breed.

We decided that we had to gain control and quickly. We sort advise from our breeder, Doreen, who put the word out for strategies to deal with food aggression. The advice we received from Lyn in US was invaluable We employed the "own the bowl" technique and it worked almost instantly. We have not had a problem for months and in fact he now tries to share his bones (lucky us).

For most puppies early socialisation is essential. We went off to puppy preschool (twice) as the first time around he thought all the little fluffy things running Mam says I've cost a fortune...but I reckon I must be around the floor were toys. We have tried to expose Kaiser to many and varied activities, situations and people as possible.

Living with Kaiser 1 All the articles and all the research into German Pinscher and their characteristic's never prepared me for last 6 months of living with Kaiser. I did the re- search and when I read the breed fact sheets on the internet and sentences like, "be aware GP's require your time and attention" or "recommended for experienced dog owner's", I thought how hard can it be, I'm ready for this. After all we had successfully raised a well adjusted Airedale Terrier with hardly any problems. Having Kaiser quickly caused a re-think.

This has helped to build his confidence in new environ- ments making him less likely to over react in new situations.

We have recently started doing obedience training with a view to agility. Kaiser has just loved these sessions and the instructor is amazed that he is only 8 months old as he already has well established sit, stay and come commands. We have started "shaping" exer-

KAISER II FIRST 48 HOURS

The long awaited "little red guy" finally arrived on Wednesday afternoon.

As soon as he was released from the travel cage, he immediately gave my wife, Eveline, heaps of puppy kisses...... the bond was now made!!

He did the usual perimeter inspection for possible es- cape routes, but was disappointed. Obviously, all the points went to Eveline, as I was not arriving home until late that night. When I got home Kaiser looked up and thought "who is he?", and promptly cuddled himself back into Eveline. I had a lot to do in order to build up my "brownie" points!! As the night went on, all was well and I was also his buddy. He even made friends I put my glasses on the dining table for a moment and was with our other little "Scuffy" (Maltese X Shih Tzu). out of the room. When I returned, I couldn't find them, and accused Eveline of moving them. After much debate, I believed she knew nothing about it. After searching the house inside out, I finally found them buried under Kaiser's toys!!

Aah, isn't life grand when you have a life like that!

Kaiser has brought much joy to our lives, and he will be loved for eternity.

Thank you to Doreen and Denise for making it happen.

Robert

We were wondering at this stage why he hadn't barked. Well, that wonder was soon answered. We have an alcove next to our bedroom where we had set up Kaiser's bed and toys. We weren't sure about his house training status, so we put newspapers

REX AND EVA Dog Treats

After researching the GP for almost 2 years, Rex came to us in December of 2006. Having had GSDs and Border Collies in the past, this was a leap of faith. We flew to Melbourne to collect Rex, and be sure that he was the 'right' dog for us. He was!!! At home Rex fitted in like he had always been part of our tribe. He attached himself to our GSD, Bud, and the 2 are inseparable. A credit to Bud, and proving the GP can fit into a multi- breed family. Rex has started his show career however our love is obedience and agility so when we looked at the GP these were our main objectives. Rex is excelling "Cut-out dog biscuits with rolled oats, cornmeal and in his obedience, and will be starting puppy agility in cheddar cheese. You can change the flavor of these July. I also instruct obedience and agility at our dog by substituting chicken bouillon for the beef." club, which doesn't leave much time for Rex, so I am proud that my little man is progressing so well. Original recipe yield:

In May we got our 2nd GP, her name is Eva (for those 4 dozen you counting, this makes 5 dogs 2xB/C, 1xGSD, 2xGP). We didn't plan to get another dog, but when she needed a family, well!!! We have 37 acres, so space isn't a huge PREP TIME 30 Min issue for us, but I still needed to get council approval. COOK TIME 30 Min The permit was approved, so Eva has now come to SA. READY IN 1 Hr Rex and Eva are a great pair, in June Eva will be starting her show career too, and will be attending obedience classes. Eva has now taken Bud (GSD) as INGREDIENTS hers, so Rex 'got the flick', but he is OK with that. It is funny when you watch the dogs play, and then when Rex and Eva play, they play differently, like they know • 1 cup rolled oats they are the same. • 1/3 cup margarine • 1 cup boiling water I guess you 'old timers' knew this, but I think that the GP • 3/4 cup cornmeal is under rated as an all-rounder. I can't believe I waited • 2 teaspoons white sugar so long to take the leap. When I take Rex out, it is • 2 teaspoons beef bouillon granules amazing the number of people who ask about him (and • 1/2 cup milk Eva), and when we go to shows, the people that recog- • 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese nize him, I hope that Rex and Eva can boost the breed reputation here in SA. • 1 egg, beaten • 3 cups whole wheat flour We look forward to hearing about other GPs and their families. DIRECTIONS Jo & Jamie Grundy Tessa, B/C 9 yrs, Lincoln, B/C 6 yrs, Bud, GSD 18 mths, Rex, GP 8 mths & Eva, GP 3 mths 1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). In a large bowl, combine rolled oats, margarine, and boiling water. Let stand 10 minutes. Grease cookie sheets. 2. Thoroughly stir in cornmeal, sugar, bouillon, milk, Cheddar cheese, and egg. Mix in flour, 1 cup at a time, until a stiff dough has formed. 3. Knead dough on a lightly floured surface, mixing in additional flour as necessary until dough is smooth and no longer sticky. Roll or pat out dough to 1/2" thickness. Cut with cookie cutter (I prefer bone shaped), and place 1 inch apart onto the prepared cookie sheets. 4. Bake 35 to 45 minutes in the preheated oven, until golden brown. Cool before serving. Store in a loosely covered container.

Our furniture arrived in early December, apparently a record for Cyprus. So now we could start arranging for Tag’s arrival to our nearest international airport in Pafos. However flights for animals only happen on a Monday and all flights before Christmas were fully booked. We were offered a place on a flight to Larnaca, but this is over 2 hours drive away and collection time was 4.00 am. A phone call to Sharon and she was delighted to keep him a little longer and his flight was duly arranged for January 8th.

Frank and I made a trial run to the airport to generally find out the procedure and check the time taken. Just as well that we did as we were told we must pick up our arriving dog at departures – well this is Cyprus. All arrangements were double checked in the UK, we unearthed his beds, bowls, leads etc. from the unpacked boxes and bought a supply of dog food. This was not the type he was used to in the UK, just hoped he would not be too fussy!

Tag was due to arrive at 19.00, but at about 18.00 and almost in the car, we were informed, by phone, that the flight was delayed and he would not arrive until 21.00. Poor Tag he had been delivered at Heathrow Airport at 10.00 (rules) for the Pafos flight at 16.30. Of course he had to be caged all that time. A four to four & half hours flight following and now he was delayed a further2 hours. By the time we had located where collection point actually was (in ARRIVALS) and were allowed into the customs area it was almost 22.00. Frank left me to deal with the paper work and payments and he set off to collect the crate. The airport was deserted by now, apart from a few staff, so the dog was allowed out (on his lead) to thankfully stretch his legs and do what a dog has to do! The customs lady had checked our papers, but before we could leave the dog’s papers from the UK had to be checked. We searched the crate but no papers and she delivered the final blow he would have to stay in the airport until they arrived. Fortunately Frank had been a terminal manager at Heathrow for many years so realised that all documents were held by the pilot. Just at this point an official for Cyprus Airlines appeared with a large envelope containing all Tag’s pertinent documents. These handed over and a further payment made, a great show was made of checking them. Rabies injection – OK, parasite injections – OK, clean bill of health from UK vet - OK , EU pet passport – OK, so we then waited for the all important microchip to be checked. After all that hassle in the UK she just waved us out, so nothing to say that the dog we imported was actually the one who passed all the tests! Red Tape!

We were overjoyed that Tag was actually with us and before anyone changed their minds we swiftly departed. Tag has settled in very quickly. He loves the sun, the new interesting walks, food no problem, but hates the thunder storms which are particularly spectacular and noisy, but fortunately not too regular. However after one traumatic night of him crying and scratching our beautiful wooden doors he was allowed to sleep in our bedroom (on his own bed of course) and has made this his retirement room ever since!

Cypriots are not on the whole very doggie orientated, in fact many seem quite frightened of dogs – especially a baby Doberman! Difficult also to explain that the broad grin is just that and not a menacing snarl. More later of my and Tag’s forays into a dog’s life on this island of CATS!!!

All best wishes to the GPs and their owners in Australia from the only GP in this somewhat smaller island.

GLORIA CUTHBERT.

People are always told never ever to leave their puppy or dog alone with small children and babies. The idea generally is to ensure that the two legged variety are safe from harm.

This picture circulating in e-mails is supposed to be cute. Ask the puppy dangling down with it’s head being taste tested. How do you think he/she feels.

Thank goodness the puppy's mom isn’t round to see.
