AYERS For generations, the memory of Thomas Jefferson has been inseparable from his nation's memory of race and slavery. Just as Jefferson's words are invoked whenever America's ideals of democracy and freedom need an elo quent spokesman, so are his actions invoked when critics level charges of white guilt, hypocrisy, and evasion. In the nineteenth century, abolitionists used Jefferson's words as swords; slaveholders used his example as a shield. -

Recipients of these annual awards are selected based upon nominees’ contributions to their students, academic disciplines, institutions, and communities. 2022 OVERVIEW The 2022 Virginia Outstanding Faculty Awards are sponsored by the Dominion Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Dominion. Dominion’s support funds all aspects of the program, from the call for nominations through the award ceremony. The selection process will begin in October; recipients will be notified in early December. Deadline for submission is 5 p.m. on Friday, September 24, 2021. The 2022 Outstanding Faculty Awards event is tentatively scheduled to be held in Richmond sometime in February or March 2022. Further details about the ceremony will be forthcoming. At the 2022 event, at least 12 awardees will be recognized. Included among the awardees will be two recipients recognized as early-career “Rising Stars.” At least one awardee will also be selected in each of four categories based on institutional type: research/doctoral institution, masters/comprehensive institution, baccalaureate institution, and two-year institution. -

HODGES INTRODUCTION In the summer of 1964, Dr. Dana B. Hamel, Director of the Roanoke Technical Institute in Roanoke, Virginia received a phone call that would change the course of Virginia higher education. The call was from Virginia Governor Albertis Harrison requesting Hamel serve as the Director of the soon to be established Department of Technical Education. The department, along with its governing board, would quickly establish a system of technical colleges located regionally throughout Virginia, with the first of those colleges opening their doors for classes in the fall of 1965. -

Virginia's Massive Folly
Undergraduate Research Journal at UCCS Volume 2.1, Spring 2009 Virginia’s “Massive Folly”: Harry Byrd, Prince Edward County, and the Front Line Laura Grant Dept. of History, University of Colorado at Colorado Springs Abstract This paper examines the closure of public schools in Prince Edward County, Virginia from 1959- 1964 in an effort to avoid desegregation. Specifically, the paper traces the roots of the political actions which led to the closure and then-Governor Harry Byrd's role in Virginia's political machine at the time. The paper argues that it was Byrd's influence which led to the conditions that not only made the closure possible in Virginia, but encouraged the white citizens of Prince Edward County to make their stand. In September, 1959, the public schools in Prince Edward County, Virginia closed their doors to all students. While most white students were educated in makeshift private schools, the doors of public education remained closed until the Supreme Court ordered the schools to reopen in 1964. This drastic episode in Virginia’s history was a response to the public school integration mandated by the Brown vs. Board of Education decision in 1954. Prince Edward County was not the only district in Virginia to take this action; it was merely the most extreme case of resistance after state laws banning integration were struck down as unconstitutional. Schools all over the state closed, most only temporarily, and the white community rallied to offer white students assistance to attend segregated private schools rather than face integration in a movement termed “Massive Resistance.” While this “Brown backlash” occurred all over the South, it was most prevalent in the Deep South. -

FORGING A NEW PATH, SWEET BRIAR TURNS TO THE FUTURE Dear Sweet Briar Alumnae, Throughout this spring semester, distinguished women musicians, writers and policy makers have streamed to the campus, in a series dubbed “At the Invitation of the President.” As you will read in this issue, the series started in January with a remarkable all-women ensemble of scholar-performers dedicated to excavating little-known string trios from the 17th and 18th century, and it ended the semester with a lecture by Bettina Ring, the secretary of agriculture and forestry for the Commonwealth. Sweet Briar was a working farm for most of its history, a fact that does not escape the secretary, both as an important legacy we share and cherish, but also as a resurgent possibility for the future — for Sweet Briar and Central Virginia. Through this series, one learns stunning things about women who shape history. A gradu- ate of Sweet Briar, Delia Taylor Sinkov ’34 was a top code breaker who supervised a group of women who worked silently — under an “omerta” never to be betrayed in one’s lifetime — to break the Japanese navy and army codes and eventually to help win the Battle of Midway. Ultimately, the number of code breakers surpassed 10,000. While America is a country that loves and shines light on its heroes, women have often stayed in the shadow of that gleaming light; they are history’s greatest omission. “Do you like doing the crossword puzzle?” Navy recruiters would ask the potential code breakers. “And are you engaged to be married?” If the answer to the former was a “yes” and to the lat- ter a “no,” then the women were recruited to the first wave of large-scale intelligence work upon which the nation would embark. -

Virginia State Capitol and Capitol Square
Virginia State Capitol and Capitol Square In 1779, the Virginia Legislature voted to move the capital from Williamsburg to Richmond. Until a permanent Capitol could be built, the Virginia General Assembly met in two wood-framed buildings at the corner of what is now 14th Street and Cary Street. With Richmond as the new capital, six squares of land were selected for the placement of permanent public buildings. In 1788, the Thomas Jefferson designed Capitol was considered finished enough to house the Virginia General Assembly. Jefferson’s Roman temple form building is the middle portion of the present-day Capitol. The original building was expanded in 1906 with the addition of two wings, and again in 2007 with an underground extension. The architecturally and historically important building is designated as a National Historic Landmark and tentatively listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The public area surrounding the Capitol was originally a weed-filled open square with informal lanes and footpaths. In 1816, the Virginia General Assembly hired French-born Maximilian Godefroy to lay out a formal park. Two years later, the newly landscaped grounds were enclosed by the cast- and wrought-iron fence still in place today, and this area eventually came to be called Capitol Square. While retaining aspects of Godefroy’s framework, Scottish-born John Notman developed an 1850 overlay plan of meandering walkways and native trees and shrubs that gave Capitol Square much of the character and appeal it retains today. This designed historic landscape is nationally significant. Sweet Briar College Magazine – Spring 2019
Dear Sweet Briar alumnae and friends, Friendship and family have been on my mind lately, and so I want to tell you about some new friends I’ve been making this semester. One of them is Ray, who is tall and smart and also known as Love Z, and the other is Blues, who is very personable and a wonderful teacher. My friendship with Ray has grown over time; frankly, I didn’t seem to make much of an impression on him at first. My friendship with Blues blossomed immediately; we seem to be simpatico. As I joked with Merrilee “Mimi” Wroten, the director of Sweet Briar’s acclaimed riding program, maybe I bonded faster with Blues because he’s rather short, and so am I. And if you haven’t already figured it out, Ray, a chestnut warmblood, and Blues, a gray quarter horse, are members of the College’s equine family, and along with Mimi, they’ve been teaching me how to ride. As Sweet Briar’s president, it’s vital for me to learn as much as I can about the Col- lege, its programs and its people. That’s why I taught a course in our inaugural three- week session in the fall of 2018; that’s why I have just instituted collegial gatherings of faculty and staff every Monday evening (called Sweet Briar Hour); and that’s why I’m taking riding lessons, so that I can better understand our equestrian program, its ac- complishments and its needs. Riding also gives me a connection with many members of our Sweet Briar family; a full third of our students identify as riders, whether for competition or recreation.
