The methods and materials described here have proved to be practicable and will give the required standard of protection and appearance.

PART 1: PRE-TREATMENT OF MATERIALS ‘;- - .-:- .

A. STEEL DETAILS

To be carried out at detail or sub-assembly stage.

(i) Light gauge rust free pickled and oiled

Immersion phosphate to B.S. 3189 followed by one spray coat of Red Oxide primer to B.R. Specification 81, Item 102, at a wet film thickness of 50 microns (preferred system)

.OR

Remove all oil, grease and any rust deposits and apply one coat by conventional spray of Grey primer to B.R. Specification 71, Item 9, at a wet film thickness of 50 microns.

(ii) Hot rolled scale bearing steel

Blast clean to SA 2% quality and apply one coat by spray of two pack Epoxy blast primer to B.R. Specification 70, Item 12B, (preferred system) at a dry film thickness of 40 - 60 microns.

—OR

Remove all rust and scale by scrapping, wire brushing and chipping and apply.one coat by spray of Two Hour Overcoatable Primer to B.R. Specification 70, Item 8, at a wet film thickness of 100 microns.

N.B. When rivetting assembly is used, the steel must be pretreated and primed at the detail stage.

B. ALUMINIUM ALLOY DETAILS

To be carried out at sub-assembly or final assembly stage.

The alloy details must not be allowed to come into contact with any dissimilar metals. The joint must be insulated with Anti-Corrosive Jointing Compound (Chromate Free) to B.R. Specification 81, Item 133.

The areas of alloy which will be subsequently painted must receive the J following treatment:

(i) Wash with white spirit and approved detergent to remove all traces of oil and grease. Abrade the surface with 320 grade wet/dry Carborundum paper and/or Scotchbrite Pad (Fine Grade) to uniformly matt the surface. Wash off all debris from this operation and allow to dry. (ii) Apply one coat of Two Pack Etch Primer to B.R. Specification 81, Item 104. c. MOULDED POLYESTER COMPONENTS

When, the components are to be subsequently painted they must be pre-treated in the following way:

(i) All exterior surfaces to be thoroughly washed with an approved detergent. Incorporated with the washing action the surfaces must be abraded with 320 grade wet/dry Carborundum paper and/or Scotchbrite Pads.

(ii) When all traces of parting or mould release agent have been removed and the surfaces uniformly matted, apply one coat by spray of Two Pack Etch Primer to B.R. Specification 81, Item 104.

D. TIMBER DETAILS

(i) Timber to be plane smoothed and sand papered. Touch in knots with Shellac.

(ii) Apply by brush one coat of Wood Primer (Lead Free) to B.R. Specification 70, Item 2, at a wet film thickness of 100 microns, to all surfaces, prior to fixing.

PART 2 : GENERAL PAINTING INSTRUCTIONS (YELLOW LIVERY)

A. BODY AND CAB EXTERIOR

(i) Touch in all bare areas (other than timber details for which Spec. 70, Item 2, Wood Primer must be used) with Q.D. Touch-in Primer to B.R. Specification 81, Item 106, and allow 4 hours to dry.

(ii) Apply surfacing operations as necessary, using hard stopping and knife spreading to B.R. Specification 81, Items 131 and 132. Face down using 220 grade wet/dry paper, rinse and allow to dry. Touch-in stopped bare metal areas with Q.D. Touch-in Primer to B.R. Specification 81, Item 106.

(iii) Apply by brush or conventional spray one coat of Sealer for Filler to B.R. Specification 81, Item 150.

(iv) Apply by brush one coat of Buff Undercoat to B.R. Specification 81, Item 154, to a wet film thickness of 75 microns. Allow 16 Hours to dry.

Apply by conventional spray, one coat of Buff Undercoat to B.R. Specification 81, Item 400. (W.F.T. 75 microns). A11ow 16 Hours to dry.

(v) If using pre-masked pressure sensitive legends, they should be applied at this stage. (vii) Complete lettering in accordance with current diagram. . . . -. NOTE . Where the cab is supplied ready painted and the colour is unacceptable, the surface should be flatted down with 400 grade wet/dry Carborundum paper, rinsed and allowed to dry then coated with either Warning Yellow Finish to B.R. Specification 81, Item 202, by brush or Warning Yellow Finish to B.R. Specification 81, Item 450, by conventional spray to a wet film thickness of 75 microns in each case.

B. WINGS , WING STAYS, SIDE VALANCES, WHEELS AND CHASSIS

(i) Touch-in bare areas with Q.D. Touch-in Primer to B.R. Specification 81, Item 106, Allow 4 Hours to dry.

(ii) Apply by brush one coat of Dark Grey Undercoat to B.R. Specification 81, Item 151, to a wet film thickness of 75 microns. Allow 16 Hours to dry.

Apply by conventional spray one coat of Dark Grey Undercoat to B.R. Specification 81, Item 401, to a wet film thickness of 75 microns. Allow 16 Hours to dry.

(iii) Apply by brush one coat of Black Finish to B.R. Specification 81, Item 205, to a wet film thickness of 75 microns.

Apply by conventional spray one coat of Black Finish to B.R. Specification 81, Item 451, to a wet film thickness of 75 microns. c. UNDERSIDE OF BODY

(i) Touch-in bare areas with Q.D. Touch-in Primer to B.R. Specification 81, Item 106. Allow 4 Hours to dry.

(ii) Apply by brush one coat of Aluminium Tinted Gelled Bituminous Solution to B.R. Specification 81, Item 652, to a wet fi?m thickness of 300 microns. Allow 24 Hours to dry.

(iii) Apply by brush one coat of Black Gelled Bituminous Solution to B.R. Specification 81, Item 653, to a wet film thfckness of 300 microns.

The surfaces to be-painted must be clean and free from grease and dust.

(i) Apply one coat by brush of Light Grey Undercoat to B.R. Specification 81, Item 152, to a wet film thickness of 75 microns. . A11ow-.I6 Hours--todry.

(ii) Apply one.coat by brush of Rail Grey Finish to B.R. Specification 81, Item 206,. to a wet film-thickness of 75 microns. .. N.B. Where the interior surfaces are required to be fire retardant the following process must be used; (the details of the F.R. treatment must be indicated in a prominent position).

(i) Apply by brush , roller or spray two coats of Intumescent Paint to B.R. Specification 62C, Item 12, to a=t film thickness of 150 microns per coat. (Successive coat must be of a contrasting colour).

(ii) Apply by brush one coat of Timonox F.R. Enamel to B.R. Specification 62C, Item 13, to a wet film thickness of 75 microns. Suggested colour to B.S. 4800 Ref. No. 00A05.

NOTE . THESE ITEMS MUST NOT BE PAINTED

(1) VEHICLE EXTERIOR

Chrome fittings, rubber wings, translucent polyester roofs and aluminium rubbing rails. When spray painting is used these areas must be masked out prior to painting.

(2) BODY INTERIOR

Translucent polyester roofs, chrome fittings, aluminium panels and slats and trimmings.

COMPLETION

The completed vehicle must be delivered in a clean condition with all dirt, scrap material, masking tape etc. removed, windows and glass cleaned and free of paint.

—------Maintenance Painting Schedule for Road Services Vehicles

Should any problems arise in the implementation of this schedule, please contact - the Road Vehicle Engineer at the above address and telephone number.

Any replacement items must be fullY pre-treated and prime painted as laid down in section one of the new-build vehicles painting schedule.------..

Before any painting is carried out the vehicle must be thoroughly cleaned tising . an approved detergent to remove all traces of oil, grease, wax and road’dirt-. -“- . . .. . The existing paint must be matted down using 400 grade wetfdry paper and/or Scotchbrite pads. This is to ensure maximur adhesion of subsequent coats which are to be applied.

Ensure that .the vehicle is fully dry before proceeding with the following painting operations.

A. BODY AND CAB EXTERIOR

(i) Remove all loose paint and rust, using mechanical means where possible and touch in bare areas with Q.D. Touch-in Primer to B.R. Specification” 81, Item 106. Allow 4 Hours to dry.

(ii) Apply any stopping as maybe necessary, using hard stopping and knife spreading to B.R. Specification 81, Items 131 and 132.

(iii) When dry, face down using 220 grade wet/dry paper. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry.

(iv) Touch in stopped areas by brush or conventional spray with Sealer for Filler to B.R. Specification 81, Item 150. Allow 6 Hours to dry.

(v) Touch in sealed areae, by brush with Buff Undercoat to B.R. Specification 81, Item 154.

—OR

By conventional epray with Buff Undercoat to B.R. Specification 81, Item 400. Allow 16 Hours to dry.

(vi) Apply overall, one coat of Warning Yellow Finish by brush to B.R. Specification 81, Item 202.

By conventional spray to B.R. Specification 81, Item 450, to a wet film thickness of 75 microns in each case. 1

By conventional spray with Dark Grey Undercoat to B.R. Specification 81, Item 401. Allow 16 Hours to dry.

(vi) Apply overall, one coat of Black Finish by brush to B.R. Specification 81, Item 205.

By conventional spray to B.R. Specification 81, Item 451, to a wet film thickness of 75 microns in each case.

c. UNDERSIDE OF CAB

(i) Remove all loose paint and rust using mechanical means where possible.

(ii) Touch in bare areas with Q.D. Touch-in Primer to B.R. Specification 81, Item 106. Allow 6 Hours to dry.

(iii) Touch in primed areas by brush with Dark Grey Undercoat to B.R. Specification 81, Item 151. Allow 16 Hours to dry.

(iv) Touch in undercoated areas by brush with Black Finish to B.R. Specification 81, Item 205.

D. UNDERSIDE OF BODY

(ii) Touch in primed areas by brush with Aluminium Tinted Bituminous Solution to B.R. Specification 81, Item 652, to a wet film thickness of 300 microns.

E. CAB AND BODY INTERIOR

(i) Wash down with an approved detergent and allow to dry.

(ii) Apply one coat by brush of Rail Grey Finish to B.R. Specification 81, Item 206.

Where fire retardent treatment has been used previously, apply one coat by brush of Timmonox F.R. Gloss Finish to B.R. Specification 62C, Item,13.

NOTE . Translucent polyester roofs, chrome fittings and interior aluminium panels are not to be painted and must be kept free from paint.

The bodywork is painted Warning Yellow to B.R. Spec. 81/2020r 450.

The symbol and logotype British Rail, size 80rnm x-height, is centred vertically on each side panel 150mm from the cab door. On vehicles with sliding doors (as shown above) the symbol and logotype is positioned further back so that only the symbol on the nearside and the word ‘Rail’ on the offside are obscured when the doors are fully open.

The logotype only, size 50mm x-height, is centred on the width of the rear offside door, below the door handle. Where this is not practical the logotype is centred above the rear doors.

The painting date, fuel type and tyre pressures are shown on all vehicles.

The symbol and ‘Re-railing Equipment’, size 100mm x-height, is positioned on each side panel 300mm from the leading edge on the near side and 300mm from the back edge on the off side. A 250mm deep black diagonal striped band is applied at waist level terminating at the headlight housing. For details of lettering and diagonal stripes see sheet 12.

A red symbol 80mm x-height is applied to the nearside rear door 70mm below the striped waitsband. The bonnet lid is painted black.
