Martin Gegner he big “mitt e-struggl e” politics and a esth etics of t b rlin’s post-r nification e eu urbanism proj ects Abstract There is hardly a metropolis found in Europe or elsewhere where the 104 urban structure and architectural face changed as often, or dramatically, as in 20 th century Berlin. During this century, the city served as the state capital for five different political systems, suffered partial destruction pós- during World War II, and experienced physical separation by the Berlin wall for 28 years. Shortly after the reunification of Germany in 1989, Berlin was designated the capital of the unified country. This triggered massive building activity for federal ministries and other governmental facilities, the majority of which was carried out in the old city center (Mitte) . It was here that previous regimes of various ideologies had built their major architectural state representations; from to the authoritarian Empire (1871-1918) to authoritarian socialism in the German Democratic Republic (1949-89). All of these époques still have remains concentrated in the Mitte district, but it is not only with governmental buildings that Berlin and its Mitte transformed drastically in the last 20 years; there were also cultural, commercial, and industrial projects and, of course, apartment buildings which were designed and completed. With all of these reasons for construction, the question arose of what to do with the old buildings and how to build the new. From 1991 onwards, the Berlin urbanism authority worked out guidelines which set aesthetic guidelines for all construction activity. The 1999 Planwerk Innenstadt (City Center Master Plan) itself was based on a Leitbild (overall concept) from the 1980s called “Critical Reconstruction of a European City.” Many critics, architects, and theorists called it a prohibitive construction doctrine that, to a certain extent, represented conservative or even reactionary political tendencies in unified Germany. -

Jonathan C. Got Berlin Perspectives on Architecture Olympiastadion – Germania and Beyond My personal interest with the Olymiastadion began the first week I arrived in Berlin. Having only heard about Adolf Hitler’s plans for a European Capital from documentaries and seen pictures of Jesse Owen’s legendary victories in the ill-timed 1936 Summer Olympics, I decided to make a visit myself. As soon as I saw the heavy stone colonnade from the car park I knew it could only have been built for one purpose – propaganda for the Third Reich beyond Germania. Remodelled for the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin by Hitler’s favorite architects Werner March (whose father, Otto March, designed the original 1913 stadium) and Albert Speer, the Olympiastadion was a symbol of power for the National Socialist party and an opportunity to present propaganda in the form of architecture. Being the westernmost structure on Hitler’s ‘capital city of the world’, the stadium was designed to present the then National Socialist Germany to the rest of the world as a power to be reckoned with. Any visitor to the stadium doesn’t only see the gigantic stadium, but also experiences the whole Olympic complex. Visitors would arrive at a 10-platform S-Bahn station able to serve at high frequencies for large events and then walk several hundred meters with a clear view of the huge imposing stone stadium as soon as visitors reached the car park. Though some might argue that neither the U- nor S-Bahn stations named after the stadium provided convenient access to the sports grounds, one has to consider the scale of the event. -

Alors que la chasse est aujourd’hui de moins en moins familière, il peut s’avérer nécessaire d’adapter l’agencement des collections ainsi que les dispositifs d’interprétation afin de pallier la méconnaissance du public. « Exposer la chasse ? » constitue l’un des aboutissements du projet initial de la division Culture du C.I.C. (conseil international de la chasse et de la conservation du gibier - présidée par Alexandre Poniatowski) de réactualiser l’Annuaire des musées de chasse dans le monde édité en 1975. Le colloque, organisé par la Fondation François Sommer pour la chasse et la nature en collaboration avec le C.I.C. est placé sous l’autorité d’un comité scientifique composé de Claude d’Anthenaise (directeur du musée de la Chasse et de la Nature), d’Yves Bergeron (professeur de muséologie et de patrimoine à l’Université du Québec à Montréal), de Sergio Dalla Bernardina (professeur d’ethnologie à l’Université de Bretagne occidentale), de Philippe Descola (anthropologue et professeur au Collège de France) et de Nélia Dias (professeur au département d’anthropologie de l’université de Lisbonne). -

Benjamin Gilfedder1,2, Fabian Wismeth1, and Sven Frei2 1Limnologische Forschungsstation Universität Bayreuth, Bayreuth, Deutschland 2Lehrstuhl für Hydrologie Universität Bayreuth, Bayreuth, Deutschland The spatial distribution and temporal dynamics of groundwater inflow to rivers is often poorly defined but central to understanding water and matter fluxes. This is especially true for the Spree River which drains the Lusatia mining district, Brandenburg Germany. In the Spree catchment iron and sulphate fluxes to the river stem from the pyrite rich groundwater system, and the area’s history of open-pit lignite mining and re-flooding of many of these mines at the end of their lifetime. This iron flux threatens the river ecosystem, tourism in downstream communities (Spreewald) and the drinking water of Berlin. Iron is often observed as precipitates along the river bed, as well as colouring the river water yellow-brown, indicating the presence of iron (oxy)hydroxides such as ferrihydrite and goethite. In this work we have used radon as a natural groundwater tracer to delimited areas of active groundwater discharge to both the main Spree River and the Kleine Spree River to better understand the spatial destitution of groundwater input to the system. This was combined with mass-balance modelling to quantify the groundwater flux along the river using the FINIFLUX model. -
