Manx Place-Names: an Ulster View
37 Manx Place-Names: an Ulster View Kay Muhr In this chapter I will discuss place-name connections between Ulster and Man, beginning with the early appearances of Man in Irish tradition and its association with the mythological realm of Emain Ablach, from the 6th to the I 3th century. 1 A good introduction to the link between Ulster and Manx place-names is to look at Speed's map of Man published in 1605.2 Although the map is much later than the beginning of place-names in the Isle of Man, it does reflect those place-names already well-established 400 years before our time. Moreover the gloriously exaggerated Manx-centric view, showing the island almost filling the Irish sea between Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales, also allows the map to illustrate place-names from the coasts of these lands around. As an island visible from these coasts Man has been influenced by all of them. In Ireland there are Gaelic, Norse and English names - the latter now the dominant language in new place-names, though it was not so in the past. The Gaelic names include the port towns of Knok (now Carrick-) fergus, "Fergus' hill" or "rock", the rock clearly referring to the site of the medieval castle. In 13th-century Scotland Fergus was understood as the king whose migration introduced the Gaelic language. Further south, Dundalk "fort of the small sword" includes the element dun "hill-fort", one of three fortification names common in early Irish place-names, the others being rath "ring fort" and lios "enclosure". -

Lonan Parish Commissioners Statutory Meeting Tuesday 21st January 2014 at 1815 hours in the Laxey Commissioners Office. MINUTES Present: Mr J. Faragher, Mr S. Clucas, Mr N. Dobson, Mr M. Burgess, Mr S. Clague, Mr P. Hill. Apologies: Nil. Guest: Mr M. Couch, Chief Financial Officer. Chair: Mr J. Faragher. Clerk: Mr P. Hill. The Meeting commenced at 1815 hours. 94/13 Meeting with Mr M. Couch, Chief Financial Officer, to discuss Rate Debtors. Action JF welcomed MC to the meeting and outlined the reason why the Board had requested his attendance. A discussion followed regarding the problems facing Local Authorities caused by rate debtors, whether through hardship or avoidance, and what measures could be put in place to encourage residents to meet their financial obligations. A number of scenarios were considered. MC outlined the difficulties also facing Central Government in relation to income tax, value added tax and other sources of income that were owed, indicating that the amount was quite substantial. He confirmed that they had instigated a number of prosecutions, the details of which were published in the local newspapers. Naming and shaming, placing a lean on property and goods seizures were options to be considered. The meeting concluded with expressions of thanks by MC and the Board, for what was seen to be a productive discussion. Those who happen to have been acquainted with the 'Manx Note Book,' edited with such ability and such excellent taste by Mr. Moore, will agree with me in this reference to him. It always struck me as a pity that he should not place on record the fruits of his familiarity with the official records of the Island; and the expression, on my part, of that feeling on sundry occasions, is the only possible merit to which I could lay claim in connexion with this volume. The ground to be covered by the work is defined by the geography of Man, and so far so good ; but on the other hand, proper names, whether of persons or of ^itcface. -

HOUSE OF KEYS GENERAL ELECTION STEV E Thursday 29th September 2011 Dear Elector RODAN This is a critical Election for you, and for the Isle of Man. At a time of great challenge, those elected to the House of Keys will have to offer vision, leadership, clear policy and critical judgment on the difficult Garff decisions ahead. I believe my experience, and the political principles and policies I have set out in this Manifesto can help in that task. My 16 years of experience include government service, with two years as Chairman of the Planning Committee, five years as Education Minister and two as Minister at the Department Health and Social Security. More recently, after the last General Election in 2006 I was elected Speaker of the House of Keys. My role as Speaker has enabled me to build valuable political contacts at Westminster and in the devolved parliaments at Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast. It is vital that the Island is well represented internationally, and I have attended the twice-yearly British-Irish Parliamentary Assembly with enthusiasm. What are my priorities for the Isle of Man? National wealth creation and full employment. The vigorous defence of our national interests and the Manx way of life against unwelcome outside political pressure and interference. To rebalance the public finances following the UK raid on our VAT sharing and indirect taxation income. To maintain the 5 key planks of Manx economic policy viz. Low, internationally competitive rates of corporate and personal taxation A statutory Budget surplus No external government borrowing Build up Reserve Funds Sustain high quality public services STEVE RODAN To enhance and promote our unique parliament, Tynwald – the institution which defines the Isle of Man, and whose legislative BSc (Hons), MRPharmS independence has made possible our unique fiscal, economic and is aged 57, married with social environment within the British Isles. -

LAXEY Visitor Guide and Laxey Heritage Trail Explore the heritage of Laxey from the “Wheel” to the shore. The Laxey Laxey Laxey village is situated on the east coast of the Isle of Man. The village extends for just over 2 kilometres from the mine workings in its upper reaches - Wheel identifiable by the famous Laxey Wheel, along the steep sided glen in a south easterly direction, to the picturesque and unspoilt tiny harbour at the North The Laxey Wheel was designed by end of a wide bay. It is from here i.e. ‘Old Laxey’ the original historic Manx engineer Robert Casement. The wheel’s axle was forged by the settlement of fishermen’s crofts that the village has evolved. Action The Minutes of the Statutory Meeting of 23rd July 2014 were examined for accuracy, and it was agreed that they represented a correct statement of events. Proposed by: JF. Seconded by: MB. 42/14 Matters Arising out of the Minutes. a) SC – 37/14(d) – confirmed that the hedges in Pinfold Hill had been cut immediately prior to his visit to the respective residents. b) SC – 37/14(m) – commented that nobody had attended the meeting; SEC stated that he had sent his apologies and PH advised the Board that ND had attended a number of meetings that day and it was a pure oversight. (SEC/ND appointed representatives). c) SC – 40/14(c) – asked if the Notice Board had been removed and if any complaints had been made, to which the Clerk replied it had and there had not been any complaints. 43/14 Private Sessions. 44/14 Planning Applications. a) Planning Application No 14/00855/TEL of 22.07.14 in respect of installation of a replacement 8m high telecommunications monopole accommodating three antennas within a glass reinforced plastic shroud at Manx Telecom Transmitter, Methodist Church Hall, Baldrine Hill, Baldrine, IM4 6DQ. SC explained that he had authorised approval in the absence of any objections from the other Board Members and none had been received.
