Sunday, June 26, 2016, 4:00PM The Lone Star Symphonic Band’s annual patriotic concert, “This Is My Country…”, at Crosspoint Community Church, 700 S. Westgreen, Katy, TX. Pieces to be performed include patriotic favorites such as America the Beautiful, Stars and Stripes Forever, God Bless the USA, and many more. The Band is also forming its annual Community Chorus to sing along with the band during this concert. The Band will also have several silent auction baskets up for auction before the performance and during intermission (winners will be announced during the second half of the concert). June 28 – July 2, 2016 Lone Star College-North Harris’ production of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid: The Musical” at LSCNH Performing Arts Theater, 2700 W.W. Thorne Blvd., Houston, TX 77073. Based on one of Hans Christian Anderson’s most beloved stories and the classic animated film, don’t miss this hauntingly beautiful love story for the ages. June 30 – July 31, 2016 The Ensemble Theatre presents “Satchel Paige and the City Swing” at 3535 Main Street, Houston, TX. The Ensemble’s season finale tells the story of the triumphs and humanity of Negro League Baseball players as business men and family men, best described in Satchel Paige’s quote “Work like you don’t need the money. Love like you’ve never been hurt. Dance like nobody’s watching.” “This is a fantastic story about the lives of Negro League Baseball Players at the pivotal moment of the first African American entering the major leagues,” says Director/Choreographer Patdro Harris. Monday, July 4, 2016, 4:00PM – 10:00PM Freedom Over Texas at Eleanor Tinsley & Sam Houston Park, 500 Allen Parkway (between Taft and Sabine Streets), Houston. Fireworks will ignite the sky, and country tunes will set the stage for Houston’s annual Fourth of July patriotic celebration. Featuring music from superstar Darius Rucker, Houston’s own The Suffers showcasing their signature “Gulf Coast Soul”, and contemporary country artist Brooke Eden on the Main Stage. July 14 – October 15, 2016 This WAS Contemporary Art: Fine and Decorative Arts in Houston 1945 – 1965, a new exhibition in The Heritage Society Museum, 1100 Bagby Street, Houston. The inaugural exhibition at the Contemporary Arts Museum in 1948 was a show called This Is Contemporary Art. The Heritage Society’s new exhibit will use the 1948 show as a model for a look back at a time when Houston and the Houston art world were in transition from regional to national – even international – significance, showcasing Houston art and decorative arts and furniture made and/or designed here. This visually arresting evening will feature two NobleMotion premiers and an audience encore, “Spitting Ether.” New works will feature a cast of 25 dancers and include collaborations with designers of light, stage, costume, music, and technology. Saturday, November 12, 2016, 1:00PM MD Anderson Cancer Center’s 1st annual Boot Walk to End Cancer at the Texas Medical Center. Walkers are encouraged to wear their favorite boots, booties or galoshes for the 1.2 mile walk. Whether they go cowboy, go-go, hiking, hunting, motorcycle, combat or rain boots, the footwear will demonstrate walkers’ support for “giving cancer the boot.” There is no registration fee to participate in the walk though participants are encouraged to raise funds through friends, family and co-workers.
