CRISTO REI 24 NOVEMBRO 2019 A COLUNA DE PADRE JEFF (1) Com a celebração de hoje de Cristo Rei, chegamos ao fim do ano litúrgico. Esta festa foi originalmente celebrada no último dia de Outubro, o dia antes do Dia de Todos os Santos. Papa Paulo VI mudou a festa para o último domingo antes do Advento, em 1969, para enfatizar a importância do dia. Uma das razões pelas quais essa data é tão apropriada é porque o ano litúrgico começa com o Advento, que é a estação de esperar a vinda de Cristo. Observando o Domingo do Cristo Rei no fim do ano litúrgico celebra e enfatiza o Reinado de Cristo. A primeira Festa de Cristo Rei foi instituída pelo Papa Pio XI em 1925, em resposta à crescente negação de Cristo como rei e ao aumento do secularismo em toda a Europa. Durante esse período, muitos cristãos, incluindo católicos, duvidaram não só a autoridade de Cristo, mas também de Sua existência. Foi também um tempo em que ditaduras perigosas estavam surgindo na Europa e além. Como o Papa Pio e outros cristãos fiéis começaram a ver o respeito e a reverência pela autoridade de Cristo diminuindo, essa festa foi estabelecida para reafirmar e reorientar a fé e o respeito no reinado de Jesus. (2) Nesta quinta-feira, comemoramos o Dia de Ação de Graças em nosso país. No meio de nossa refeição de peru, vamos verdadeiramente dedicar tempo para agradecer a Deus por todas as bênçãos em nossas vidas – incluindo o dom de nossa fé, família e amigos. JEFF’S COLUMN (1) With today’s celebration of Christ the King we come to the end of the Liturgical Year. This feast was originally celebrated on the final day of October, the day before All Saints’ Day. Pope Paul VI moved the feast to the last Sunday before Advent in 1969 to highlight the day’s importance. One of the reasons this date is so fitting is because the liturgical year begins with Advent, which is the season of awaiting the coming of Christ. Observing Christ the King Sunday at the end of the liturgical year cele- brates and emphasizes the Kingship of Christ. The first Feast of Christ the King was instituted by Pope Pius XI in 1925, in re- sponse to the increasing denial of Christ as king and the rise of secularism throughout Europe. During this period, many Chris- tians including Catholics doubted not only Christ’s authority, but also His existence. This was also a time when dangerous dicta- torships were emerging in Europe and beyond. As Pope Pius and other faithful Christians began to see the respect and reverence for Christ’s authority diminishing, this feast was put in place to reaffirm and refocus faith and respect in the kingship of Jesus.
(2) This Thursday, we celebrate Thanksgiving Day in our country. In the midst of our turkey meal, let us truly take time to thank God for all the blessings in our lives – including the gift of our faith, family, and friends. The Eucharist, a word which comes from the Greek word for “thanksgiving,” is truly the best way we can give thanks to God.
