Revd Jane Isaac’s update on church life during the pandemic*

Isn ’t it good to have printed parish magazines again! And even better, having the magaz ines online as well means that they’re reaching a whole new readership online via the church websites. Thank you on behalf of all our readers in both parishes to the editors, magazine committees, contributors, distributors and advertisers – longstand- ing and new – for making the magazines happen month by month. Chu rch opening: I’m delighted to be able to let you know that St John the Baptist, ShedLi eld and St Nicholas, Wickham are able to remain opened for private prayer during the week and for services on Sunday: Private prayer: Every day between 10.00am–4.00pm. Come in – the door is open wide! – and spend some quiet time in this cool, comforting, special space, light a candle and enjoy the stillness. One visitor told me that she could feel the prayer in the air. Sunday worship: I’m writing this only a couple of days after the Prime Minister announced that the anticipat- ed ending of lockdown on June 21st wouldn’t now be happening, so it would be unwise to commit to any published schedule of services just now! Whilst we wait for as clear a possible steer on social distancing and other restrictions, my intention is to ease us gently into a regular Sunday worship pattern, whilst continuing the joint beneLice worship service every week at 10.00am, alternating between St John the Baptist Church, ShedLi eld and St Nicholas, Wickham. Details are available on the church websites, village Facebook pages and on the noticeboards outside both churches and in Wickham Square. More details of Sunday services will be availab le in the September edition of the parish magazines, along with the return of the church diary listings whi ch I know so many of you enjoy and appreciate. If you would like to receive the weekly eBulletin mailing, please do get in touch with the parish administrators (their contact details are on the inside front cover of your magaz ine). The ministry team and churchwardens are continuing to review the speed at which we come out of lockdown restrictions and widen the variety of services available in the light of national Church of , diocesan and Government guidance. Detailed information about this guidance can be found on the Church of England website churchofengland.org/coronavirus and the Diocese of Portsmouth’s coronavirus pages portsmouth.anglican.org/coronavirus Please be aware that despite the easing of lockdown, face coverings must still be worn in church at all times and that social distancing and track and trace requirements continue to be in place. I’m very grateful to my ministry team colleagues and the volunteers who remain as committed as ever to keeping the churches open, Covid-secure and as welcoming as we can make them given the ongoing restrictions. Online services: For those of you who aren’t yet quite comfortable about being out and about again, for the time being the popular suite of Being Church at Home services will continue every week, accessible online or in easy-to-print-out format. A printed copy of the weekly Sunday service can be delivered to you if you aren’t able to access it online: just get in touch with the ministry team (details on the inside front cover of this maga- zine). When will Lunch Club and other groups be getting underway again? Some of our regular groups have put together a schedule of outdoor and/or Zoom meetings, others have made the decision to wait until September before meeting up again: please be reassured that your group leaders will be in touch with all the information you need as soon as they possibly can. Revd Juliet and Revd Ruth join me in sending you our love and all good wishes, Jan e *Written on 16 June 2021 – please be aware that government and Church of England regulations and guidelines may have been changed or amended by the time you read this . BUS B ACK BETTER

The government has asked Hampshire County Council to produce a Bus Service Improvement Plan to help more people to use the buses. We want HCC to include: 1. More road space for buses Reserve streets to help bus routes avoid trafLic jams and interconnect across central Winchester, so it is easy for everyone to get to the railway station and new leisure centre without using a car. 2. Better bus services Better routes, to more villages, and more frequent, reliable and quicker timetables to get people out of their cars. It needs to be easy to get to critical destinations such as places of work, hospitals, surgeries, schools and supermarkets and train stations, wherever you live. 3. Affordable bus fares The fares throughout the district are too high, and this is especially difLicult for families and people on low income. Cost should not prevent people from using the bus. 4. Pollution-free buses Buses must be greener. We would like to see electric buses wherever possible. 5. Better bus connections Bring in better bus stops and decent connections between buses, and with trains. Make it easy and pleasant to catch the bus by improving the main bus stops – lighting, shelters, live information, cycle parking, and good access footpaths. Change timetables and routes so people can change easily between buses and onto trains on any journey around the whole District, and to neighbouring areas. We can all make choices to live lower carbon lifestyles, like using our cars less, but sometimes we are limited by the reality of the systems we operate in. Hampshire County Council could help set up better bus systems to make low carbon travel a real option for more of us. WinACC COUNTY & DISTRICT COUNCILLORS’ REPORT FOR JULY 2021
