The name of St. Elmo is attributed to an Italian derivation of Saint Elmo or St. Erasmus (circa 300 A.D.), the patron saint of the early Mediterranean sailors challenging the powers of storm and sea in small sailing vessels. Legend records that when a blue light appears at mastheads before and after a storm, the seamen took it as a sign of Erasmus’s protection. This was known as "St. Elmo's fire". St. Elmo's fire has long served as an omen of heavenly intervention to sailors. The property is subject to servitudes as per Title Deed. The climate is typical sub-tropical with warm and humid summers and mild winters along coast. This region is a summer rainfall area with rain from November through to March. The weather in winter is on average beautiful sunny days and calm seas. Sea temperature are generally around the low 20º C. All the rooms facing the ocean have panoramic views of the ocean. The rooms facing inland have a view of the rolling green hills of KZN. The property slopes naturally from northwest to southeast. Existing Buildings on the Property The buildings on the property are of significant architectural and heritage value and every effort should be made to ensure that the integrity and facades of the buildings be retained as far as reasonably possible. The development on the property is over sixty years old and any alterations and extensions to most of the buildings would be in terms of the provisions of the Heritage Act of 1997 which requires AMAFA approval.
